DESE Teacher of the Year Nominations Deadline Friday, January 22 Do you know an amazing teacher? Each year the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) recognizes and honors outstanding educators through various recognition programs.  One way to recognize these educators is to nominate them to the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year program.  Anyone (students, colleagues, parents, supervisors, community members) may nominate teachers to the program.  You can learn more HERE.

Seeking New Members Friends of WY&FS Friends of the Wayland Youth and Family Services is looking for new members for our parent education committee. Friends is a parent-led group that has been active in Wayland for many years. We collaborate with the staff of Wayland Youth and Family Services to provide educational programs for parents of Wayland and surrounding towns. Some of our past programs include presentations from experts on the following topics: Wellness practices for children Stress reduction for children and Families Resilience in our children Depression and mental health needs of our children Sexuality development in children Substance abuse prevention Bullying   New ideas are always welcome – Please bring them along with your energy for this great parent group! Manage Anxiety with Energy Medicine Tuesday, January 19 Wayland Public Library Do you have anxiety or fear?  Many people do.  Learn Eden Energy techniques that may help.  Rachel Rice, Wayland resident and Founder of Five Rhythms Consulting will introduce the role the Triple Warmer Meridian plays in fight, flight or freeze response, how this impacts the body's energies as well as various techniques that can be used to bring the energies back into balance.

Summer Camp Fair Sunday, January 24, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM Grades K - 12 Lincoln Sudbury High School The 14th Annual Summer Camp Fair will held at Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School, 390 Lincoln Road, Sudbury, on Sunday, January 24, 11:00am – 2:00 pm . Over 80 camps will be offering information on day, overnight and travel programs for students in grades K-12. Parents and students will have the opportunity to meet and speak with representatives from these camps offering unique programs including travel, community service, arts, sports, academic enrichment and traditional camp options. Please come and bring the kids- Admission is FREE!

Sport in Society Study Update Tuesday, January 26, 7:00 PM Community Presentation WHS Lecture Hall In September 2015, Wayland High School partnered with the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society to envision and realize an athletic program that is based on best practices and shared values. Over the past few months, Northeastern has administered surveys to all current WHS students and staff and to Wayland community members.  Additionally, the Northeastern staff has facilitated focus groups involving students, staff, coaches, and parents of both athletes and non-athletes. At 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 26, the team from Northeastern will present their findings and recommendations at an open community presentation at the Wayland High School lecture hall.  All community members are welcome to attend.

Wayland Garden Club Tuesday, January 26, 9:30 AM Guest Speaker 53 Cochituate Road The Wayland Garden Club invites the public to be guests at our meeting on Tuesday, January 26 at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 53 Cochituate Road, Wayland. The meeting will begin with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. and a brief business meeting at 10 a.m. followed by our guest speaker Elizabeth Farnsworth, a biologist, educator and scientific illustrator. In her role as a senior research ecologist at the New England Wildflower Society, Farnsworth wrote a comprehensive peer-reviewed report that, for the first time, gathers together the most up-to-date data on the status of plants in the New England landscape. She will discuss the report’s findings and will focus on what we can do to help protect the viability of the thousands of species that together comprise our diverse and vibrant flora. Introducing Wayland Little League Open House & Equipment Swap Sunday, January 31, 3:30 - 5:00 PM Grades K - 9 Town Building Hearing Room After many years of independent operation, the Wayland Baseball and Softball Association (WBSA) is pleased to announce its new affiliation with Little League International. Now known as Wayland Little League Baseball and Softball, our mission is to provide baseball and softball skills development opportunities to kids of all abilities in grades K-9 in a fun, engaging, and safe environment for spring, summer, and fall programs.  We will host an open house on January 31 and our Board of Directors will be on hand to talk more about this new affiliation and what it means to you, and to introduce the many exciting baseball and softball programs coming up this winter and spring. We also welcome you to bring (and take!) any bats, gloves, cleats or other “gently used” equipment that may be needed for the upcoming season.  All unclaimed equipment will be donated to a local youth baseball and softball charity.  And of course, pizza and light refreshments will be served. 3D Design with TinkerCAD Thursday, February 4, 7:00 - 8:30 PM Wayland Public Library Eric Carlsen will guide teens and adults through the process of creating their own 3D model using Tinkercad, an easy and fun 3D design tool. We will be printing out the creations! Workshop attendance needs to be limited, so registration is required. You MUST be 12 or older to register on your own, but we encourage parents of younger kids to register and design with their children. Location: Raytheon Room, Wayland Library. Brides of Yesteryear Sunday, February 7, 2:00 PM Wayland Museum & Historical Society 12 Cochituate Road Ready for some romance of yesteryear? Perhaps you have a bride- to-be in your family or children and/or grandchildren who would love to see what brides of long ago wore for their wedding. Come to the Wayland Museum to see and learn about the history of wedding gowns from the 1850’s to the early 1930’s. As you travel through the rooms of the museum, you will hear about the many different styles of these dresses, the fabrics used and who wore them.  The dresses have been preserved and lovingly cared for in our costume collection by Gloria Backman, our textile specialist. What better time in preparation for Valentine’s  Day to view these precious gowns along with our vintage collection of valentines. Top off your visit with punch and a piece of wedding cake!

Curious Creatures Monday, January 18 10:30 - 11:30 AM All Ages Claypit Hill Gym Round up your curious kids and join the WCPA at the Claypit Hill School gym for this year's all new Curious Creatures program, a live hands-on animal show for all ages. New features have been added and you won't want to miss it! Get up close and personal with an alligator, snake, gecko, or bearded dragon! Stroke the soft fur of a chinchilla or pet a flying squirrel or a ferret! Tickets will be sold at the door: $5 each for members ($20 max per family) or $7 each for non-members ($25 max per family). Children under 1 are free. Refreshments will be available for purchase after the show. Please come out and support WCPA programming at what is sure to be the fundraising event of the year!

Thursday, January 21, 7:15 - 8:30 AM Wayland High School South Building Room B226 You are invited to drop by the all-new WHS Makerspace to meet our founding class inventors! Could these students really have invented a way to practice ski jumps in your own backyard, a way to pick the best subway car, a path to a happier marriage, and a relaxing place to sit that follows you around? Come see these any many more inventions, and learn about the design process.  Visitors, please be sure to obtain a visitor badge in the WHS main office prior to attending. We hope you can join us!

Pegasus 2016 to Debut New Programming! June 27 - August 5 Preschool - Grade 6 Enrollment for the school district's summer enrichment program, Pegasus, will begin later this month, and brochures with new programming details will soon be mailed to all families. Started in 1994, Pegasus offers preschool, kindergarten, and school age programming (Preschool - Entering Grade Six). Dates for 2016 are June 27 - August 5, and there are two three-week sessions.
