Message from Mayor Kriseman: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15 to October 15, Americans from an array of racial, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds come together to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at this time, because it encompasses the dates of the anniversary of independence for many Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.

Our nation, our state, region, and the great City of St. Petersburg have always drawn our strength from our diversity. Hispanics throughout our state have advanced our economy, contributed to the arts and sciences, and and helped improve our communities, building stronger cities, just like St. Pete.

I hope you'll join me in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Creative Loafing: Vile scourge of non-alley recycling in older St. Pete areas shall soon end

Remember a couple of months ago when most people you know were like, "hey, cool, we're finally getting curbside recycling in St. Pete, took long enough" but a few people were basically calling Mayor Rick Kriseman a fascist because the bins are big and blue and the trucks used for pickup were too big for the city's alleys?

Well, today, Kriseman announced the city will roll out a new fleet of trucks that will pick up recyclables in alleyways of neighborhoods where garbage trucks pick trash up in alleys.

Creative Loafing: Ask the Locals: Bonnie Agan

In the early 1990s, when Bonnie Agan was cast in American Stage's The Diary of Anne Frank, all of St. Petersburg's arts and cultural scene could be traversed in one quarter of a city block. "It's been marvelous to watch the arts grow up in this town," Agan says. "I give a lot of the credit to Bob Devin Jones. Studio@620 is a petri dish. Everything goes in there and kind of takes off."

One of the latest corporate relocations to town didn't land in a tall office building with marble floors, a glass elevator or concierge services. And the employees aren't toiling away in cubicles or corner offices with views of Tampa Bay.

The 50 people working at GeniusCentral software developer sit at desks made of metal and plywood, on lime green and orange pillows and inside a 1957 shiny, silver Spartan brand trailer.
