Governor Cuomo Announces Executive Actions to Reduce Barriers For New Yorkers
With Criminal Convictions

Governor Cuomo announced that 12 recommendations made by the Council on Community Re-Entry and Reintegration, which removes barriers faced by New Yorkers with criminal convictions when attempting to re-enter their communities, will be fully implemented by his administration.

Two of these recommendations directly impact people living with a mental illness. These recommendations will:

  • Create new housing and treatment capacity for mentally ill people leaving state prison. Capacity will be increased through a Department of Mental Health solicitation for supported housing units for seriously mentally ill individuals returning to New York City. This supportive housing will help keep seriously mentally ill people in treatment and off the streets.
  • Increase the number of individuals leaving prison who are enrolled in health care coverage.New Medicaid enrollment efforts will be fully rolled out, led by the Department of Health and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Close to 400 people a month have been enrolled thus far. This coverage is needed because people leaving prison and jail have high medical needs, including for treatment of substance abuse disorders and chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Without medical coverage, they end up costing all of New York more through expensive emergency room visits.

NYC trains lay people as mental health screeners

The Door, a wide-ranging youth outreach center in New York City, is training its employees to be able to identify possible psychological problems they may have. This is part of a $30 million initiative to provide mental health training to staff at social service organizations. The practice of screening people for possible mental health issues comes with its own problem though. The New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitative Services is concerned that this system will create many false positives, contribute to the concerns among the mentally ill, as they fear this system will possibly make their conditions seem worse than they are. In-School Mental Health Centers Help Children
Access Services

The Shenendehowa school district in New York York's Capital District noticed a dramatic increase in the amount of students coming into the nurse's office last year for mental health related symptoms. The school realized they were not equipped to handle these situations. This year they have teamed up with the Saratoga Center for the Family to get a licensed clinician in the all of the schools a few days a week to provide counseling. Other schools in the area have already done the same thing and it is proving to be so successful that it is being presented to the New York State Board of Education at their upcoming convention. The Ivy League, Mental Illness, and the
Meaning of Life

William Deresiewicz was an Ivy League professor at Yale and his years of experience there lead him to write this article about the negative side of attending an Ivy League university. William explains how the students at Yale are "excellent sheep," a term derived by one of his students. The terms means that they are all excellent students, but like sheep they are only successful because they are being told exactly what to do and how to act. William says that the pressure these students are put under will eventually take a toll on their mental health. Click here to read more.
