Burnside Building Restoration

The Burnside Building project is under way! Mostly roofing at the moment, but the cupola has also been completely restored and it now has a brand new weathervane! Thanks to David Ferro Weathervanes in Warren, ours is a replica of the original 42" Arrow Weathervane made by E.G. Washburne Co. in Danvers, MA around the turn of the century. Unlike the original, however, this one actually tells you the wind direction!

November 19th Lecture: Stan Grayson on his new book about Ray Hunt

In a presentation specially prepared for the Herreshoff Marine Museum, historian and writer Stan Grayson will talk about the life and work of Ray Hunt. He will examine some of the key formative events in Hunt's life, discuss his extraordinary skills as a sailor, present an overview of several of Hunt's most important designs and, finally, discuss which three Hunt designs can be considered most revolutionary in their impact on the yachting scene. Stan's talk will be illustrated by a selection of photos from the book.

December 1st Carlton C. Pinhiero Lecture: Roger Taylor on L. Francis Herreshoff

On Tuesday, December 1st, Roger Taylor will present the findings in his recently published book titled "L. Francis Herreshoff: Yacht Designer".  L. Francis Herreshoff lived from 1890 to 1972, and, though not prolific, he designed yachts that will always be considered classics. Beginning his career in the shadow of his famous father, Nathanael G. Herreshoff, he emerged to become a designer who would come close to the perfection of form in yacht design. Mr. Taylor will make the case that, while L. Francis never achieved the popularity of designers like John Alden or Olin Stephens, his influence on yachting, now and in the future, deserves its place alongside those leaders.

Please Donate to the 2015 Annual Appeal

Thanks to the generous financial support of our donors, this has been a year of new highs for HMM.  More visitors, more attendees for our HMM lecture series, more kids participating in the HMM School of Sailing & Seamanship and more yacht club cruises paying a visit to our docks and moorings than ever before kept this place humming all season long.

2015 was a year full of projects made possible by generous donors and geared to enhance the museum's "curb appeal". These include a new (107' tall) flagpole and fence on the waterfront and the Burnside Building and Peacock Alley House renovations.  In 2016, we continue the transformation of HMM to a world-class destination, and this fall, we're hoping you'll continue your support of the museum - and perhaps consider increasing it from past years.  While we know where we want to take HMM, it's not going to happen overnight, and it cannot happen without you. Our goal is to raise $100,000 with this year-end appeal and we thank you for your consideration and generosity.  You are the wind in our sails and we could not move forward without you.

It's Never too Early to Think About Summer Sailing!

The 2015 sailing season has officially come to a close and all of our boats have been hauled and put away for the winter. Despite the approaching cold weather, it's never too early to start dreaming about the heel of the boat as you cruise down Narragansett Bay.  Our 2016 youth, adult and rental registration can now be found ONLINE!  Follow the link here if you'd like to check out the dates and programs for 2016.

Even better, give the GIFT of sailing! With the upcoming holiday season, you can give the gift of sailing by purchasing a lesson or program for the sailors on your list. Contact Sailing Director Maria Coughlin for more details at [email protected] or visit our online registration page.

As we start to work on the boats to get them ready for the 2016 season, we need  VOLUNTEERS to pitch in on the maintenance of our classic H12s. I f you like to work on wooden boats, contact Maria Coughlin.  We'd love to have your help!
Curator's LogNGH & The Am erica's Cup

In the autumn of 1913, three prospective Cup defenders are under contract. The first to launch the following April is the NYYC syndicate's Herreshoff-designed and built RESOLUTE. She is now gone, but her half-model is available for all to see in the model room of the Herreshoff Marine Museum. What is not seen is the challenges Capt. Nat Herreshoff overcame to achieve the early successful launching.

RELIANCE Project

Latest News:

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been working towards finalizing the rudder addition. In the last blog post, you all saw Keith's installation of the pintles on the keel. Since then, the crew has added metal borders to each side of this pintle set. These fairing strips were meant to keep the RELIANCE hydrodynamic when using the rudder.
