Executive Directors Corner

Greetings everyone!

The FAM Tour is in our rearview mirror and I think we can label it a success.  The six Guild members were surprised by the quality of the sites within the region and the educational systems efforts in driving the workforce in cooperation with the business and manufacturing base.  The follow-up session Friday morning was filled with good input on the region, the organization, marketing suggestions and overall frank analysis of what the members heard and saw during the tour.  I know I've mentioned before what a privilege it is to host a tour of this sort, and the tour and feedback reiterated the value of getting these Guild members into the region and raising our visibility in their eyes when evaluating the needs of present and future clients.  I believe this is a fundamental responsibility of Momentum West and these tours will be a reoccurring offering of the organization.

Thanks to all that helped put this together.  The list is huge and not only includes the board, the economic development and tradeshow committees, but also numerous representatives from area EDC's, chambers, the WEDC, the higher education institutions in the region as well as many business and industry in the area.  Also, as this is not an inexpensive undertaking, thanks to the many sponsors outlined in last month's newsletter for your support.  We needed to raise $50,000 to come close to covering the costs and your participation and understanding of the opportunity presented by hosting a FAM Tour made it happen.

Shifting gears, thanks to those groups and individuals that submitted letters of support for the Regional Business Fund.  These letters have been packaged with the Momentum Letter and sent.

Next on the radar: helping develop a regional strategy to address the talent challenges facing the Momentum West region.  More to come as we move forward.

We're not very good at tooting our horns in the State of Wisconsin, but quickly I want to outline some of the activities of the organization you support.  Examples of recently completed and current initiatives of Momentum West:

  • Development of the Gold Shovel Ready program to identify and aggressively market available shovel ready sites to developers, site selectors and brokers.
  • Complete overhaul of website to effectively market regional assets and resources.
  • Formulation and implementation of a social media marketing plan.
  • Participation in state, regional, national and international tradeshows including MAEDC, the Site Selectors Guild Conference, and the Hannover Messe.
  • Advocacy for the Confluence Project, RBF, Northern Wisconsin Engineering Consortium, River Falls incubator project, and participation in the Chippewa Valley Rally and St. Croix Rally.
  • Hosting of a Site Selectors Guild FAM Tour, with six Guild members in attendance, to highlight industrial sites and industry sectors within the region.
  • Work with the STEM Coalition, Manufacturing Works, and other regional entities to identify current talent attraction/development/retention issues, formulate a strategy to address these on a regional level and orchestrate a regional effort involving industry, the education system, area EDC's and other key entities in the region.
  • Acquiring of the NWITA and developing a strategy on how to effectively educate, provide a conduit to available resources and foster additional exporting within the region.
  • Offering of regular forums in partnership with the area EDC's, WEDC, Federal Reserve, Transportation Alliance and Office of Business Development with topics including exporting, regulatory issues, transportation, and the regional economy.
  • Work with the UW Extension and Innovation Foundation to develop an entrepreneur roadmap of resources for the Momentum website.

Thanks,

Steve

Committee Updates

Economic Development Committee:

The committee is looking at a quarterly meeting with the regional other EDC's and representatives from other organizations.  This would be an opportunity to cover in more detail Momentums projects as well as look into other regional concerns and initiatives that Momentum West could help drive.

Tradeshow Committee:

With the FAM Tour done the committee is focusing on the tradeshow calendar for July'15 - June '16.  We are looking at some new options, but plan on again attending the MAEDC in December, SSG conference in February, Hannover and several state and regional offerings.

NWITA:

I'll sound a bit repetitive here as we're still in the process of getting the launch meeting scheduled.  This group will be meeting soon to develop an overview of the offerings and purpose of the Northern Wisconsin International Trade Association.

Marketing Committee:

We received some excellent feedback on our website, branding and marketing material from the Guild members that we will be discussing and implementing.  The marketing committee will also be meeting to discuss regional marketing of the organization.  We need to increase the awareness of the activities of the organization within the region.

Talent Attraction:

Work continues on several initiatives within the region involving internship programs, work with the STEM Collaborative, and an effort to address the talent challenges on a regional level.

Fundraising:

Potential reductions in state funding is making our regional fundraising efforts that much more crucial.  With the items mentioned earlier in this newsletter, we believe we have taken significant steps forward in elevating our value proposition.  Please consider an investment in Momentum West as the continuing work of the organization is important to the economic growth of the region.  The impact we can make in the region goes beyond the items mentioned in this and the previous newsletters, but without investments from businesses and industries within the area we are limited to what impact we can make.  An investment in Momentum West is an investment in the overall economy of our region, whether it be time or financially, and we appreciate your support.

Volunteer Spotlight

My hats off to the team that put together the FAM Tour.  This was a huge effort and went off without a hitch.  The tour comprised of numerous events over a three day period, many running concurrent.  Without the work of the committee and many others we couldn't have pulled it off.  Thanks!

Christina Wasson - Chair, Scott Hodek - Co Chair, members Seth Hudson, Elaine Coughlin, Eric Turner, Charlie Walker, Blake Fry and James Hanke.  Also thanks to Bill Rubin, Todd Gilbert, Bruce Barker, Chancellor Bob Meyer, Jason Plante and WEDC CEO/Secretary Reed Hall for helping orchestrate the tours or speaking at one of the events within the event!  There are many more that helped, so thanks to the others that played a role in making this happen!

News and Notes

International Growth Opportunities:

A powerhouse in Latin America, Chile logged average annual growth rates of 4.5
percent during the 2003-2014 period, even considering the slight contraction during
the global financial crisis. With a population exceeding 17 million, Chile offers a
dynamic, transparent and low-risk business climate for exporters. It ranks high in
ease of doing business and low for perceived corruption, and also possesses one
of the best credit rankings in South America. Investment and export opportunities
are on the rise as the Chilean economy improved during the first quarter of 2015
after a slowdown in 2014 caused by declining mineral prices. Since it does not
possess a developed manufacturing sector, Chile is highly dependent on imports.
Given the synergistic nature of our economies, there are significant opportunities
for Wisconsin companies to sell equipment to Chile's agriculture, mining, food
processing and power generation sectors.

September 23, 2015 - Train programs scheduled in Hudson and River Falls

With a passenger train from St. Paul to Eau Claire now in the Minnesota Department of Transportation's 20 year transportation plan, two public programs on the plan will be held on Wednesday, September 23 in Hudson and River Falls.

"It's time to bring the train to Hudson-River Falls," says Dan Kodesh, Co-Chair of the St. Croix Valley Rail Group, a citizens group sponsoring the programs.  "The purpose of the programs is both to learn more about the plan, but also to generate local support for bringing the train to Hudson-River Falls," he notes.

Speakers will include Dave Christianson, a professional planner on transportation, and Scott Rogers, governmental affairs and workforce director for the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce.

The program will be held from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the River Falls Public Library, and then be repeated in Hudson. Organizers are looking for a room large enough for the anticipated audience.

The St. Croix Valley Rail Group is a volunteer citizens group that also supports the work of other organizations and leaders, including Momentum West, on bringing passenger rail to western and central Wisconsin.  People who would like to help publicize the program should email William Draves at [email protected]

* If you would like your upcoming event to be included in the Momentum West newsletter, please send information to [email protected]  prior to the 15th of each month
