Executive Directors Corner

Congratulations to the team from UW Stout on securing the mechanical engineering degree program. No more hurdles! Offering additional engineering programs in the region will help train local talent to fill readily available engineering positions in the region. This is a big step, and one of many that needs to be taken to address the talent shortage in the region.

Along these lines, we have begun work with Shelley Lee from the STEM Collaborative to inventory the efforts being made to tackle the talent issues in the region. Some of these are obvious, such as the struggles with finding engineers in the region, but there are numerous other challenges that collectively create a monster of an issue. Our hope is that with an inventory we can not only identify the steps being taken, but find potential efficiencies or overlap of efforts, identify additional impactful steps that can be taken, and help develop a regional strategy and specific initiatives to address the talent issues. This may well be the most significant challenge the region faces over the next decade and we hope to eat the elephant, so to speak, one bite at a time. Please feel free to connect with me on efforts that you are involved with or are aware of as well as what you're facing on the talent front. It's going to take a group effort to significantly turn the dial.

We are excited about how the pending June FAM Tour is shaping up. This tour is a rare opportunity for us to bring six of the premier site selector professionals into our area for parts of three days in early June. These folks are members of the Site Selectors Guild, a group of the top-tier professionals in identifying geographic locations and placing industry in these locations around the world. There is more information under the committees section of this newsletter, but a quick note to parties looking to submit sites for the Gold Shovel Ready program, if your site is submitted prior to the FAM Tour they will be included on a zip drive overview of the tour that each Guild member will receive when the tour is wrapped up.

The first of the Gold Shovel Ready roadshow presentations took place mid-April to a group of municipal representatives, contractors, economic development professionals, commercial brokers and members of A&E firms. We're planning on taking this presentation to wherever our presence is requested. This program can be a valuable tool to get information on shovel ready property to those making decisions on business and industrial growth. Shoot me an email or give me a call and we'll set up a time to head in your direction.

Hopefully you're aware of the two upcoming forums hosted by Momentum West with the help of BMO Harris Bank and the Dunn County Economic Development Corporation. On May 5th we will be hosting eight Wisconsin overseas trade representatives at CVTC in Eau Claire. This is a unique opportunity to hear a group presentation from this team as well as meet with the representatives from select countries individually. Also in mid-May Nancy Mistele from the state's Office of Business Development will be in New Richmond, Rice Lake and Eau Claire for three meetings to discuss regulatory issues and how her office can be a resource in addressing these challenges, whether pending or already in place. Further information is included later in this newsletter including registration information.

As part of the partnership we have with the WEDC, the Regional Leadership Council was formed a few years ago. It is a coalition of the nine state recognized regional economic development associations that collectively cover the state, Momentum West being one of these nine organizations. Recently a study was conducted by an independent consulting firm assessing the historical roles, current efforts, capacity and direction of the nine regional economic development organizations in Wisconsin. Last week the nine organizations met in Madison with the WEDC to further define the roles of the regional economic development organizations. This is crucial in our forming a unified effort across the state in the offices of the regional organizations, but more importantly to our region, it will create a list of expectations for each organization including Momentum West. As Momentum West evolves, this roadmap will assist in making sure Momentum West is fulfilling its role as a regional economic development organization, both in terms of the state's expectations and those within our region as well. We've gotten much feedback over the past few months in our outreach, positive and some not so positive, and along with the state's expectations and the more clearly defined roles of the regional economic development corporations, I think we're heading in the right direction.

I'd like to welcome aboard Juliana Lucchesi to the Momentum West team. Juliana is a 2014 graduate of UW Stout where she obtained a B.S. in Applied Science with a concentration in interdisciplinary science. She is currently attending The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, pursuing a M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning. Her focus is in environmental/land use and economic development. Juliana will be driving our digital effort, creating a presence on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter as well as making the website an ever evolving entity both in terms of links, news briefs and other offerings. We're thrilled to have her on board!

Lastly, the board, volunteers and active investors have accomplished quite a bit over the past year or so. We'd like to think that we're gaining momentum! Pardon the pun. The unfortunate thing is that many folks in the region are unaware of the direction Momentum West is heading in, and unaware of the efforts being made to further regional talent, growth in business, industry and entrepreneurship. Help us get the message out. Feel free to pass this on and invite folks to connect with momentum. We'd love to have additional recipients get this monthly newsletter and find out what's going on at Momentum West.

Thanks,

Steve

Committee Updates

Economic Development Committee:

The tradeshow committee is busy putting together the details of the June 10-12 Site Selectors Guild Familiarity Tour, also known as a FAM Tour. The tour will focus on three industry sectors - Plastics manufacturing, distribution facilities and Ag/food processing. Thanks to Seth Hudson from Cedar Corp and Bill Rubin from the St. Croix County Economic Development Corporation for taking the lead in the distribution sector, Paul Bauer from the Ellsworth Creamery Cooperative and James Hanke from Xcel for taking the lead in the Ag/food processing sector, and Charlie Walker from the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation and Eric Turner from the Dunn County Economic Development Corporation for running with the distribution sector. In addition to focusing on these sectors, we'll be presenting case studies on recent success in the region and touring available shovel ready sites.

Two members of the tradeshow committee, Eric Turner and Charlie Walker, just returned from the Hannover Messe show. This is the world's leading trade fair for industrial technology. We've got plenty of contacts from the show to follow-up on. We were one of only a few state entities to tie into the Governor's trip, the start of which was the Hannover show. This was a collaborative effort with the WEDC.

Marketing Committee:

The marketing committee is continuing to work on the outreach tied to the Gold Shovel Ready program. With a few sites being processed, we'll be beginning our mail and digital marketing campaigns highlighting the program and the Gold Shovel Ready properties.

We continue to make additions to the website, which will never be finished as it is a permanently evolving marketing tool. Please feel free to give us feedback on resources that may be missing from the site. Our LinkedIn and Facebook and Twitter presence will soon be hitting the digital realm as well.

 Fundraising:

Please consider an investment in Momentum West. The impact we can make in the region goes beyond the items mentioned in this and the previous newsletters, but without investments from businesses and industries within the area we are limited to what impact we can make. An investment in Momentum West is an investment in the overall economy of our region, whether it be time or financially, and we appreciate your support.

News and Notes

Derrick Companies Recognized for Safe Work Environment

Derrick Companies was recently notified that the firm's outstanding safety record has resulted in the Minimum Experience Modification Factor in calculating Worker's Compensation insurance rates. This is a significant accomplishment and a testament to the attention to safety on job sites and the overall culture at Derrick Companies.

The Experience Modification Factor adjusts workers compensation insurance premiums for a particular employer based upon a comparison of past losses of that employer to what is calculated to be average losses of other employers in that state in the same business, adjusted for size. Wisconsin has its own rating bureau for determining the EMF which also integrates with the National Council on Compensation Insurance. In summary, this means that Derrick Companies has a documented and measured safety record that far exceeds companies in the same business in Wisconsin and offers one of the safest places to work in the industry.

Derrick Companies is a New Richmond-based construction firm specializing in commercial design-build projects, custom homebuilding, and land development throughout Western Wisconsin and Eastern Minnesota. The firm was also recognized in February by Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin (ABC-WI) with the Gold Safety Award at the annual SuperCon Conference for an excellent safety record and is also a recipient of the Platinum Level Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP). STEP is an ABC-WI self-audit program which provides a valid objective method to measure a company's safety plan and improvements and Platinum Level is the best possible rating of the program.

Movie Theater in Ladysmith, Caf? in Viroqua Win Main Street Makeover Contest

Businesses to receive WEDC grants and technical assistance to give their stores a whole new look

MADISON, WI.  April 20, 2015 - The Miner Theatre in Ladysmith, a city of 3,400 in northwestern Wisconsin, has been chosen as the grand prize winner in the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation's (WEDC's) Main Street Makeover Contest.

The single-screen movie theater, which has been open continuously since 1948, will receive $10,000 in assistance toward realizing the owner's vision for upgrades to the theater. Plans include restoration of the historic fa?ade and lobby space, as well as other improvements, including adding a second screen to allow the theater to show more than one movie at once. Owner Brian Herrick, who purchased the theater in 2011, said the addition also will enable the theater to offer other types of events such as concerts.

The contest aimed to raise awareness of the Wisconsin Main Street Program and its four-point approach to economic development in downtown districts, as well as increase the engagement of businesses and communities within the Main Street program and showcase the businesses that bring life to downtown districts. A total of 37 applications were received from businesses in 19 of Wisconsin's 36 designated Main Street districts. The winners were announced Friday night at the 24th Annual Wisconsin Main Street Awards ceremony at St. Norbert College in De Pere.

"We had more than three dozen outstanding entries in our first-ever contest and it was a difficult choice," said Tricia Braun, deputy secretary and COO of WEDC, the state's lead economic development agency. "The Miner Theatre entry really stood out because it presented the opportunity to upgrade and modernize the theater while still maintaining the key historic elements."

"This award couldn't come at a more perfect time-we're so excited to move forward with plans for the theater," Herrick said. "We just saw the building and the community and fell in love-there is so much potential here and we're happy to have a role in helping the community realize it."

The runner-up in the contest, Driftless Caf? in Viroqua, will receive $5,000 in assistance from WEDC to help further the owner's business expansion plans. Located in Vernon County, which has the highest concentration of organic farmers anywhere in the U.S., the caf? sources more than two-thirds of its ingredients from producers within a 150-mile radius.

Since chef and owner Luke Zahm purchased the caf? in July 2013, it has expanded its menu beyond pizza and salads and has expanded into an adjacent building. Zahm is also working toward a full liquor license as part of an expansion that would entail hiring five additional employees, adding more seating, and thus purchasing more food from local farmers.

Both businesses will receive assistance on marketing and business operations from WEDC staff. They will also receive design assistance for interior and exterior improvements and assistance in implementing the recommended improvements, interior space design and layout, signage, marketing materials and other operational enhancements to improve business perception and function in order to maximize revenue and growth potential.

Once the project is complete, the "makeover" will be formally unveiled during a public celebration featuring state and local officials, and WEDC will facilitate additional state and local media coverage recognizing the winner.

All eligible applicants will receive outreach and technical assistance from WEDC community development staff and their local Main Street staff to help them achieve their business goals. There also were three finalists in the contest: Schroeder's Department Store, a fourth-generation business in Two Rivers that was founded 1891; The Bagelmeister, a sandwich shop and bakery in Fond du Lac; and The Looking Glass, a rapidly growing vintage merchandise store in Osceola.

"This unique contest not only provides additional support and services to the winning business, but it also highlights the benefits of the Wisconsin Main Street Program, which has resulted in the creation of more than 4,500 new businesses and 7,000 new jobs in Wisconsin since its inception in 1987," said Errin Welty, downtown development account manager with WEDC, which administers the Wisconsin Main Street Program. "A vibrant downtown is critical to the overall economic health of a community, and our staff works closely with local Main Street organizations to help ensure their success."
