Executive Directors Corner

Greetings everyone!

As of the end of June we now have verified six sites in the Gold Shovel Ready program.  The sites are:

New Richmond Business and Tech Park

Roberts Business Park

Hammond Business Center II

Thompson Industrial Park in Woodville

Crossing Meadows Business Park in Ellsworth

Menomonie Schaefer Property

Outreach to our list of site selectors, developers, brokers, etc. is underway and ongoing.  We'll get these properties as much visibility as we can.

The website launched a few months ago, and after receiving suggestions from the visiting Site Selectors Guild members last month, we are in the process of evaluating and adding data to the content of the site.  Our goal is to not only give an overview of the region, but to allow site selectors to drill down into specific workforce and demographic details of the region.  The team working on this met mid-July and has a long list of improvements/additions for the site.  We'll hopefully be making these upgrades soon.

Last month we included a list of some of the significant initiatives undertaken by Momentum West in the past year plus.  Many of these are ongoing and several new items dealing with regional talent attraction and marketing are underway.  The organization is confident that we have developed a solid value proposition for the region and are positioned to be a significant contributor to economic development within the region.

With this said, it appears that state funding, which constitutes the largest and near majority of the investments in Momentum West, is being cut by possibly over 70%.  We need to maintain the momentum that we've achieved due to hard work of our board and volunteers, as well as our investors.  Now more than ever your support is needed to keep the ball rolling.  Thank you to our current investors and thanks for considering investing if you currently are not part of the investor team.

Thanks,

Steve

Committee Updates

Economic Development Committee:

The committee is looking at a quarterly meeting with the county EDC's within the region as well as representatives from other organizations.  The first of these will be this fall.  This would be an opportunity to cover in more detail Momentums projects as well as look into other regional concerns and initiatives that Momentum West could help drive.  We plan on using these meetings to plan our strategic direction moving forward.

Tradeshow Committee:

The committee continues to compile feedback from the FAM/Advisory tour in June.  I had hoped to share more of this with you, but the document is taking on a life of its own and we don't want to leave anything out.  I'll share the highlight in next month's newsletter.

The committee has developed a calendar for July 2015 - June 2016 tradeshows.  In addition to the Hannover Show, Site Selectors Conference, MAEDC and numerous state offerings, we're hoping to branch out in a few new directions.  Much of this is contingent on funding, but these are important offerings of the organization and we  hope to keep a full calendar.

NWITA:

Outreach has begun on assessing the needs of manufacturers needs in the region in regard to exporting.  We are planning a roundtable involving those involved in international trade as well as those desiring to become involved.  Once we get further into our conversations we'll lock in more definitive plans for a gathering.   We'll model the organizations path on the needs uncovered in the outreach and roundtable, as well as a survey if necessary.

Marketing Committee:

In addition to the website enhancements mentioned earlier in this newsletter, the marketing team is looking at how we can better market ourselves in the region.  Those of you reading this newsletter are aware of our recent activities, which we believe have been significant, but our list, although growing, is only 2,300 strong.  We're hoping to be able to pass on abbreviated information through other organizations within the region.  We are also looking at offering the organization for presentations at civic groups and clubs throughout the region.

Talent Attraction Committee:

Work continues on several initiatives within the region involving internship programs, work with the STEM Collaborative, and an effort to address the talent challenges on a regional level.

Fundraising Committee:

I mentioned earlier that potential reductions in state funding might make our regional fundraising efforts that much more crucial.  Please consider an investment in Momentum West as the continuing work of the organization is important to the economic growth of the region.  The impact we can make in the region goes beyond the items mentioned in this and the previous newsletters, but without investments from businesses and industries within the area we are limited to what impact we can make.  An investment in Momentum West is an investment in the overall economy of our region, whether it be time or financially, and we appreciate your support.

News and Notes

 International Growth Opportunities - Mexico

With a growing economy, close proximity to the U.S. and a low cost of doing
business, Mexico is a prime export market for Wisconsin companies. As one
of the state's top trading partners, Mexico imported about $2.8 billion in
Wisconsin products in 2014. According to recent market updates, Mexico's
food and beverage sector is expected to grow at a rate of 3.3 percent in
2015, presenting excellent export opportunities for businesses in Wisconsin's
nationally recognized food and beverage industry. Mexico is also experiencing
growth in a variety of other sectors, including automotive, aerospace, medical
and scientific instruments and renewable energy.

When: 7:30am - 9:00am

Any accredited investor interested in attending a no-obligation meeting to learn more about angel investing should contact Pete Marsnik at [email protected] or 715-878-9791.  CVAIN has invested nearly $6 million in start-up and early stage companies in the west central Wisconsin region.   Since the beginning of 2015, the network has made investments in two Eau Claire companies, Adhesive R&D, Inc. and Fiberstar BioIngredient Technologies, Inc.

September 23, 2015 - Train programs scheduled in Hudson and River Falls

With a passenger train from St. Paul to Eau Claire now in the Minnesota Department of Transportation's 20 year transportation plan, two public programs on the plan will be held on Wednesday, September 23 in Hudson and River Falls.

"It's time to bring the train to Hudson-River Falls," says Dan Kodesh, Co-Chair of the St. Croix Valley Rail Group, a citizens group sponsoring the programs.  "The purpose of the programs is both to learn more about the plan, but also to generate local support for bringing the train to Hudson-River Falls," he notes.

Speakers will include Dave Christianson, a professional planner on transportation, and Scott Rogers, governmental affairs and workforce director for the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce.

The program will be held from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the River Falls Public Library, and then be repeated in Hudson. Organizers are looking for a room large enough for the anticipated audience.

The St. Croix Valley Rail Group is a volunteer citizens group that also supports the work of other organizations and leaders, including Momentum West, on bringing passenger rail to western and central Wisconsin.  People who would like to help publicize the program should email William Draves at [email protected]

* If you would like your upcoming event to be included in the Momentum West newsletter, please send information to [email protected]  prior to the 15th of each month
