KEY ISSUE - INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS |
|
Please join the University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business, Business Forward and COBRT for a White House Business Council briefing on January 28 with Matt Erskine, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development and Chief Operating Officer of the Economic Development Administration, to discuss international trade.
In this special session, Mr. Erskine will provide an overview of the Administration's international trade agenda and its effect on the greater Boulder region and the state of Colorado. This will be an opportunity to speak with a senior Obama Administration official on how trade policies affect businesses.
Mr. Erskine brings more than 20 years of leadership and management experience in business, public sector and public-private partnerships. Prior to joining the Obama Administration and the Department of Commerce, he led the private-public partnership driving economic development and foreign direct investment for the fifth largest metropolitan region in the U.S. and worked in senior roles at global business consulting firms.

U.S. trade continues to expand, and with it, U.S. employment. Based on the latest available data (2014), trade supports 41 million U.S. jobs. This means that more than one in every five U.S. jobs is linked to exports and imports of goods and services.
Nearly three times as many jobs were supported by trade in 2014 as in 1992 - before the accelerated wave of trade liberalization that began with the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994 - when our earlier research found that trade supported 14.5 million jobs, or one in every ten U.S. jobs.
Business Roundtable has produced Trade & American Jobs: 2016 Update which is available on their website... Read More

Biz Tax Reform Bill Introduced
The plan would cut corporate income tax to 25%, moves toward a territorial tax system, allows full expensing and more.
Some stats from the report:
* Ex-Im supported 109,000 American jobs.
* Ex-Im supported $17.0 billion in exports at no cost to American taxpayers.
* Nearly 90 percent of transactions directly supported U.S. small businesses.
* Ex-Im remitted $431.6 million to the U.S. Treasury for debt reduction.
The definition is important to small businesses because only accredited investors are allowed to invest in small businesses in some situations. SEC is currently accepting comments on the report as well as the recommended changes to the definition.

Even with a slowdown in new business filings in Colorado during the fourth quarter of 2015, employment in the state is expected to expand over the first and second quarters of 2016, according to a University of Colorado Boulder report.
At 23,306, the fourth-quarter new entity filings were down from 25,164 in the third quarter of 2015 and down from 23,360 at the same time in 2014.
A total of 102,670 new entities were recorded during the 12-month period ending in December 2015.
The number of entities in good standing ticked up 5.5 percent year-over-year to a new record of 601,588.
"Despite a slight decline in business registration, our office continues to help Coloradans achieve their dreams," said Williams. "For the first time Colorado exceeded a major milestone having over 600,000 business entities in good standing."
