Welcome

Welcome to the January 2016 Edition of The Real Times.

First of all, we would like to extend a very Happy New Year to all our customers, vendors and friends! With the weather here in the Northeast having been so warm, it's hard to believe it's January.

For our first edition in 2016, we have articles on operational evolution, safeguarding your data through encryption, why purchasing a consumer grade PC for your business may cost you more in the long run, and tips to keep your workforce healthy during flu season.

As a follow up to the information in our November newsletter, I am pleased to announce that after reviewing several potential solutions, our technical staff has selected Proof Point Essentials as the replacement for McAfee Email Security and Continuity. Proof Point has the best combination of performance, features, and value, including an option for encryption should you need it, and has the highest Gartner Magic Quadrant rating.

To help end users understand the dangers of Ransomware and how to avoid becoming a victim, our CTO, Mike Van Pelt, has put together a document that everyone who uses a computer should read. Click here to see the entire article.

That's it for this month's edition, look for us again in March. In the meantime, stay warm and healthy.

Quote of the Month

Fate is like a strange, unpopular restaurant filled with odd little waiters who bring you things you never asked for and don't always like.

Writing in the Harvard Business Review, Michael Hammer once defined operations innovation as "truly deep change" in core activities and processes. However, he added, this entails more than mere operational improvement or excellence—it necessitates "a departure from familiar norms and requires major changes in how departments conduct their work and relate to one another." More than a decade later, well into the era of digital operations, such deep change is more essential than ever.

A new industrial revolution is upon us—one in which digital technologies redefine business strategy and operational execution. Executives are pressured to innovate and make intelligent investments in game-changing technological advances such as the Internet of Things (IoT), mobility, cloud computing and analytics. With digital technology powering this operations revolution, technological change is at the forefront of operations executives' awareness.

Encryption: How To and Why It's Important

Encryption is the process of protecting personal data, often with a form of "secret code," so that it cannot be read by anyone who doesn't have the code key. Today, huge amounts of personal information are managed online, via computer applications, and stored in the cloud, or servers with an ongoing connection to the Web.

It's nearly impossible to do business of any kind without personal data ending up in a networked computer system, whether you are a buyer, seller, private citizen, or major corporation. So why should you get serious about encryption?

Why Encryption Matters

Why encrypt? Here are five good reasons:

1. Internet privacy concerns are real. In one recent survey, 92 percent of respondents said they worried about their online privacy. Encryption helps protect privacy by turning personal information into "for your eyes only" messages intended only for the parties that need them — and no one else.

Why business-class PCs are a smart investment
used with permission from HP Technology at Work

Think back to the last time you bought a new PC or laptop for your business. Did you approach the purchase the same way you would for a personal device? And if you had a problem, were you satisfied with the level of service you received?

Many small and medium-sized businesses purchase consumer-grade PCs and notebooks by default,1 not realizing the amount of difference a business-class model can make.2,3 Consumer-grade devices can work fine for many organizations, but businesses with more stringent performance, reliability, and support needs can save time and frustration by moving up to business-class devices.

Think of it this way: when you purchase an economy-class plane ticket you know there's going to be a marked difference between your experience and the experience of someone flying first class. More legroom, better menu options, more responsive service—the benefits are clear, and for many business travelers it makes sense to upgrade, especially if the flight is long.

Business Continuity Tip
Prepare for Flu Season

Flu season can have a big impact on a business. Every year, 5-20% of the population becomes infected, resulting in nearly $16 billion in lost earnings, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Fortunately, employers can play an important role in preventing flu, helping to protect employees' health and reducing losses in productivity and revenue.

Click here to download the Influenza Checklist for tips and suggestions on how to prepare employees for the season ahead and respond in the event of an outbreak.
