MGH and Boston Medical Center sponsor a session on opioids as part of HUBweek
The session "From Opioids to Alcohol: Designing an effective response to addiction" takes place
Monday, October 5 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Wyndham Hotel on Blossom Street in Boston. Clinical experts will use case studies and the latest neuroscience to take a fresh look at building prevention, treatment and recovery management approaches that work. The keynote speakers are Wilson Compton, MD, MPE, deputy director of the NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse and A. Thomas McLellan, PhD., founder and co-chair of the Treatment Research Institute. MGH 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment Completed
On September 18, the MGH Board of Trustrees voted to approved the
2015 Community Health Needs Assessments (CHN
As). Local residents in Revere, Chelsea and Charlestown have spent the past nine months gathering data. More than 1,600 local residents responded to a Quality of Life Survey, and 120 individuals participated in focus groups. Residents gathered at community meetings this summer to review this data and to discuss how to best collaborate to address each community's health needs. The final CHNA report will be posted on CCHI's website by October 1st.

Sylvia Chiang takes the helm of Revere CARES as Kitty Bowman retires
Sylvia Chiang, MPH, a longtime advocate of clinical and community health, is the new Revere CARES director after the retirement of Kitty Bowman. Sylvia, a former medical general practitioner in her native Honduras, joined Revere CARES in 2007 as the manager of what is now known as Revere on the Move. She also has served as the coalition's assistant director since 2013, working closely with city leadership to enhance food, transportation and opportunities for physical activity to make Revere healthier.
In her 18 years as the founding director of the Revere CARES coalition, Kitty Bowman worked with the community to achieve dramatic reductions in alcohol, tobacco and drug use among youth in Revere.

Recovery Coaches hired to assist SUDs patients at Mass General
MGH's new substance use disorders initiative has completed the hiring of its recovery coaches. These are peers, in recovery themselves, who assist patients overcome barriers to treatment, providing motivational support and serving as key members of the patients' care teams. The recovery coaches serve Boston, Boston Health Care for the Homeless, Charlestown, Chelsea and Revere. Read about Mass General's response to the opioid epidemic

Living TOBACCO-FREE launches a tobacco and e-cigarette education project for youth
Living TOBACCO-FREE has launched a project to address young people's increasing use of devices similar to e-cigarettes known as e-hookahs, hookah pens, and vape pens. With help from Health Resources in Action, Living TOBACCO-FREE will work with Revere youth this fall to develop a communications campaign aimed at Revere High School students and their parents. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about the health impact of these devices and to discourage their use. For more information, contact Jonina Gorenstein at [email protected].

More than 200 youth explored STEM careers at MGH this summer
More than 200 high school and college students spent the summer at MGH, engaged in work experiences and participating in professional development workshops. High school students worked in hospital departments and community health centers as part of Boston Mayor Martin Walsh's Summer Jobs Campaign. The college students in the MGH Summer Alumni Internship Program worked in internships that advanced their knowledge in their fields of study.
