Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
One of the highlights of my year is having the opportunity to do  tashlich  with our students at the beautiful Van Saun Mill Brook which runs alongside our school. Yesterday, I accompanied our K-5 classes to the brook where I spoke with them about the incredible opportunity we have during these Yamim Noraim to ask forgiveness from Hashem, from our friends, and from our families for any wrongs we have done over the past year. I explained that we refer to Hashem as  Avinu Malkenu  - Our Father, Our King - and we discussed the differences between a father and a king and how Hashem combines the attributes of both. Whereas a king rules with absolute authority, a father or parent always has the best interest of the child at heart and is therefore always ready to teach and to forgive. Hashem's parental love for each one of us makes Him eager and ready to forgive us - all we need to do is ask with urgency and sincerity. The children and I then symbolically emptied our pockets and threw our mistakes and negative acts over the past year into the flowing water as we prepared to start the new year with a clean slate. As we approach Yom Kippur, may all of us be given the benefit of the doubt, be forgiven for our past mistakes, and be blessed with a  k'tivah chatimah tovah .
Tashlich
Rav Ronen led students in grades K-5 in  tashlich , saying the  brachot , singing  Avinu Malkenu , and letting go of mistakes and actions they regret.

Around BPY
Our new STEM discovery room was busy this week! First graders measured the lettuce they had planted for our rabbit - only 7 days old and already 1.5 inches tall! Second graders compared the characteristics of our dwarf rabbit and box turtle. Did you know they are similar in a few ways? Both have sharp claws and tails and both are very quiet. Fourth and fifth graders researched our school animals and made informational signs for their cages.

BPY Bar/Bat Mitzvah Projects
A message from BPY 6th grader Mia Cohen about her bat mitzvah year project:
"I have decided to volunteer my time and effort to the Friendship Circle as my bat mitzvah project. To kick-off my year long commitment, my family is supporting me at the September 20th walkathon. I will personally be creating crafts with the kids that day and I am so excited to be working with this organization. Everyone needs friends and I will be learning to work with this population through training and volunteering. Throughout the year you will hear updates from me and I hope you will support me in my efforts. Wishing you all a Shana Tova full of love and friendship! -Mia"
