HC DrugFree's Teens Walk a Straight Line
On Friday, October 30 at Howard High School, members of HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council volunteered to assist the Howard County Police as teen participants wore the drunk driving goggles and attempted to walk a straight line. MVA MD Highway Safety Office (MHSO) hosted the 2015 Ford Driving Skills for Life event, presented by Ford Motor Company and the Governors Highway Safety Association to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in driver education programs. The mission is to provide resources and education to supplement teen driver training programs nationwide.

In the KNOW... at the 50+ Expo
HC DrugFree shared information about prescription and over-the-counter medication misuse at the 50+ Expo that was held on October 16 at Wilde Lake High School. HC DrugFree's Executive Director Joan Webb Scornaienchi and County Executive Allan Kittleman want County residents to be "In the KNOW..." because three out of four people using heroin began with the use of prescription medication.

6th Annual Steven Dankos 5K / Turkey Trot - November 28, 2015
In memory of Steven Dankos, a 17 year old River Hill High School student who was tragically killed in an automobile accident involving alcohol, consider registering for this fundraising event to support the Steven Dankos Foundation's mission to change the culture of drinking and driving, particularly among high school and college students. 12th Annual Maryland Remembers Memorial - November 7, 2015
Maryland Remembers is an annual memorial that honors the lives of people killed on Maryland roads at the hand of impaired drivers. UNITE to Face Addiction Rally Held
October 4, 2015 was a history-making day in the effort to face addiction. Tens of thousands of people showed up and 700 partners joined together for the first ever UNITE to Face Addiction rally and concert on the National Mall to begin changing the conversation from problems to solutions for addiction in America. In addition to incredible performances, the Surgeon General announced the country's first ever report on addiction. Click on the image to see a short summary of the event.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:
- 44 people in the U.S. die from prescription painkiller overdose EVERY DAY
- Almost 7,000 people are treated in emergency rooms for using these drugs in a manner other than as directed EVERY DAY
- Taking too many prescription painkillers can stop a person's breathing, LEADING TO DEATH
- In the past decade, 45% of people who used heroin were also addicted to prescription opioid painkillers

HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC)
HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC) meets one Monday evening a month from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Barn (Oakland Mills Village Center) and is open to all Howard County high school students. The next TAC meeting will be held on November 9. Community service hours are available. Permanent Medication Disposal Boxes
Howard County residents can drop off unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications at 3 locations in the County where permanent disposal boxes have been installed. Boxes are located at the Howard County Police Northern District Station (3410 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City) open 24/7, the Howard County Police Southern District Station (11226 Scaggsville Road, Laurel) open 24/7, and the Gary Arthur Community Center (2400 Route 97, Cooksville) open 7 AM to 9 PM Monday-Saturday, and 9 AM to 6 PM on Sundays.
Don't share your leftover meds with others - sharing drugs can be extremely dangerous!
The other person taking the drug may not have been seen by a physician to determine if he or she indeed needs the drug, what dosage is appropriate, and possible allergic reactions or adverse reactions due to other medications being taken.
Coming soon: HC DrugFree has partnered with the Howard County Police Department to provide additional permanent medication disposal boxes in the County...Stay tuned for more details.

Free Training to Save a Life! Opioid Overdose Response Training
If your child, spouse or friend is abusing opioids (prescription pain medicines such as Percocet or Vicodin, and street drugs such as heroin), attend the free training offered by the HowardCounty Health Department.
The next classes are scheduled for Monday, November 16 at 5:00 PM, and Monday, December 14 at 8:00 AM at the Health Department.
