Dear Reader,
Three big things to announce this week!
One is that we have had enough requests that we are ready to start forming up a book group that will meet here at the store. Please join us at 5pm on Saturday, February 27 to meet others who are interested and talk about book selection and formation. Plus everyone will go home with a free advance copy of a book. Mark your calendar now.
Two is that we are having a The First Annual Great Cookbook Swap on Sunday February, 28. See details below, but in a nutshell you can bring us your unused books and swap them for fresh ones. Cool huh?
And Three is that I want everyone to know about Feather River Art Camp for adults. We will be hanging art from 2015 session campers for the month of March and on the 5th there will be folks on hand to answer questions about camp and how awesome it is. I was there so I know you can't wait to see my art. Well, come and see what it's all about anyway.

Speaking of art we have started painting classes again on Saturdays. Here's more information. Don't be afraid of being creative!

Happy Reading,

Luan

AMONG THE ARRIVALS THIS WEEK

The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel $27  Yann Martel returns to the powerful themes of Life of Pi, the Man Booker Prize winner and phenomenal bestseller, in this allegorical novel that explores questions of loss and faith, suffering and love. Sweeping from the 1600s to the present,The High Mountains of Portugal weaves three intersecting narratives into a captivating blend of epic journey, ghost story, and contemporary realism, all held together by Martel's unforgettable voice-a voice that is as mesmerizing, witty, and wise as ever.

Ginny Gall by Charlie Smith $26.99  Delvin Walker is just a boy when his mother flees their home in the Red Row section of Chattanooga, accused of killing a white man. Taken in by Cornelius Oliver, proprietor of the town's leading Negro funeral home, he discovers the art of caring for the aggrieved, the promise of transcendence in the written word, and a rare peace in a hostile world. Yet tragedy visits them near daily, and after a series of devastating events-a lynching, a church burning-Delvin fears being accused of murdering a local white boy and leaves town.A sweeping, eerily resonant epic of race and violence in the Jim Crow South: a lyrical and emotionally devastating masterpiece from Charlie Smith, whom the New York Public Library has said "may be America's most bewitching stylist alive."

Be Frank With Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson $25.99
A sparkling talent makes her fiction debut with this infectious novel that combines the charming pluck ofEloise, the poignant psychological quirks of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and the page-turning spirit ofWhere'd You Go, Bernadette.
Reclusive literary legend M. M. "Mimi" Banning has been holed up in her Bel Air mansion for years. But after falling prey to a Bernie Madoff-style ponzi scheme, she's flat broke. Now Mimi must write a new book for the first time in decades, and to ensure the timely delivery of her manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. The prickly Mimi reluctantly complies-with a few stipulations: No Ivy-Leaguers or English majors. Must drive, cook, tidy. Computer whiz. Good with kids. Quiet, discreet, sane.

Searching for Sappho; The Lost Songs and World of the First Woman Poet by Philip Freeman $26.95  The daughter of an aristocratic family, a wife, a devoted mother, a lover of women, Sappho was one of the greatest writers of her own or any age. Although most people have heard of Sappho, the story of her lost poems and the lives of ancient women they celebrate has never been told for a general audience.Philip Freeman, a Harvard PhD and classics professor, paints a vivid picture of Sappho's world. He delves into religious rites, ancient customs, the role of women in the family, medical knowledge of the time, and the experience of motherhood. Through this contextual knowledge, a picture of Sappho's life emerges. Freeman uses his vast historical research, in conjunction with Sappho's poems and other Greek works of fiction, to bring us the closest we can come to knowing the biographical details of this most-famous woman poet.

Charles Bukowski On Love, edited by Abel Debritto $24.99
A companion to On Writing and On Cats: A raw and tender poetry collection that captures the Dirty Old Man of American letters at his fiercest and most vulnerable, on a subject that hits home with all of us.
Charles Bukowski was a man of intense emotions, someone an editor once called a "passionate madman." InOn Love, we see Bukowski reckoning with the complications and exaltations of love, lust, and desire. Alternating between tough and gentle, sensitive and gritty, Bukowski lays bare the myriad facets of love-its selfishness and its narcissism, its randomness, its mystery and its misery, and, ultimately, its true joyfulness, endurance, and redemptive power.

YOUNGER READERS

Pax by Sara Pennypacker $16.99
Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild.
At his grandfather's house, three hundred miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't where he should be-with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be reunited with his fox.
Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own. . . .  Destined to become a classic! Really.  10 and up.
