VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald to Reform Vets' Appeals Process
Last week I presented to the Senate Veterans Affairs' Committee the way forward for the important transformation of the Department of Veterans Affairs-what we call MyVA. We aim to improve our care and services to all Veterans. In order to do that, I made clear that we would need Congress' help in legislating a fair, streamlined, and comprehensive process for new appeals, as well as providing much needed resources to address the current pending inventory of appeals. IRS Offers Free Filing to Veterans, Families
The
Internal Revenue Service has announced that the nation's 2016 individual income tax filing season opens Jan. 19, 2016, with more than 150 million tax returns expected to be filed this year.
People will have several extra days to file their tax returns this year. Taxpayers have until Monday, Apr. 18 to file their 2015 tax returns and pay any tax due because of the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C., falling on Friday, April 15. The IRS expects more than 70 percent of taxpayers to again receive tax refunds this year. Last year, the IRS issued 109 million refunds, with an average refund of $2,797.
Boulder City Library hosts "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" starting February 1
The Boulder City Library hosts the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" February 1 - March 11, 2016. The heart of this unique war memorial is the Wall of the Dead, individual faces and names of U.S. military war personnel who perished in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars since Sept. 11, 2001.
Called "a national treasure" by viewers, "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" offers a sacred space for viewers to contemplate the effects of war on each of us.
The Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Boulevard, is open every day. The "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" exhibit is free and open to the public.

Grant for Homeless Vets' Housing in Carson City
A $40,636 federal grant to help homeless veterans who need housing in Carson City was awarded to the Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA), officials announced Wednesday.
The grant will be used to help out at the development called the Jeanell Drive Apartments on
the city's north side, a project spearheaded by FISH (Friends In Service Helping) and already

Oldest Female Veteran, Alyce Dixon, 108, Remembered
The oldest female Veteran, the high-spirited, fun-loving, amazing local celebrity, Alyce Dixon, died peacefully in her sleep at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center's Community Living Center. She was 108 years old.
She is well-known in the community for her elegant sense of style, her long repertoire of eyebrow-raising jokes and very strong opinions. She credits her long life to sharing and caring.
