3D Scanning
Who Are You Wearing?
3D Scanning Clothing

It s eems like the red carpet interviewers have to ask the question. But one question that will likely precede that is - what are they wearing? This is important to your 3D scanning team, as there are some materials that do not scan well. Reflective items such as sequins, as well as transparent articles of clothing can present a challenge. If possible, send your scanning company some form of reference of your talent's outfit to give them an idea of what they will have to do to get the scan to work. A little preparation goes a long way in terms of time and efficiency.

Layers are another important factor when it comes to clothing. These include items that can obstruct the view of other items, such as hats, scarves, and open jackets. An action shot may cause deformation of these articles, revealing the layers beneath them. For that reason, it can be important to scan the talent with and without their layers. We run into this situation often, and the answer to this question is not always a certain one. What is certain, is that you save more time and money by knowing this upfront.

3D SCANNING
Cities and Buildings and Cars
- Oh My!

It seems that more and more items in games, films, and TV are going digital. This makes sense as the ability to change, destroy, and do most anything you want with an item is then available. So instead of relying on the action from a single take, the shot can be reworked until the director gets exactly what they want. This is especially handy when working with large, fixed, or expensive items, such as cities and the pieces that make them up.

The digital asset is there to reuse, time and time again. If the asset will be used in a TV series, the data can be re-purposed for different scenes - especially if the writers decide to do a flashback sequence, and the look of the asset may need to be adjusted to match the patina of time.

You can also share the wealth. If another one of your studio's projects is in need of a similar asset, you can use your existing asset as a base to create the asset that is needed. Think of a car frame or a bare city street that can have varying paint and signage added to them to create multiple assets, or versions.

This service is of course a compliment to 3D scanning for characters. Imagine if you could get all of this potential from one location. Only one point of contact. All while negotiating the entire project to get a better price. This is the future, but this is available now.

3D Printing
     3D Printing Your World

Every year technology takes a step forward, and we all benefit a little more from it. 3D printing is a new technology yet to be fully implemented into our lives as fully as it one day will be. A 3D printer uses 3D models, and a 3D model created by scanning ensures greater accuracy than you could achieve otherwise.

Scan data is generally very high poly, which is to say it is a dense mesh - so dense that in order to be displayed (rendered) it's required to simulate this high poly object with a low poly object. It starts with the scan data. Once acquired, a low poly cage can be put around the scan data, and be made to have its exact shape, and through the technique of using what we call maps (image files) contain the data to instruct the low poly object to display as a high poly object. This can be done through normal maps and displacement maps. Alternatively you can just use the high poly, most dense mesh in a scene, and render. However people would like a low poly object with a lot of detail which are conflicting attributes, and this is a real problem for 3D printing as 3D prints require an object that's not very high poly.

3D scanning is a few steps ahead of what we can utilize in today's printing technology. As hardware technology improves, the higher the poly count on all objects can be cranked up, and everything will appear more real - as you see things in reality.
