This Week at St. Mark's         February 4, 2016
Living Well through Lent at St. Mark's- This  Sunday, February 7, copies of this year's Lenten meditation book from The Living Compass - "Letting Go with all Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind" - will be available after worship.

Each Tuesday evening during Lent we will gather with our friends from St. Matthew's according to the following schedule:
  • February 16 - St. Mark's
  • February 23 - St. Matthew's, 2120 Lincoln Street, Evanston
  • March 1 - St. Mark's
  • March 8 - St. Matthew's
  • March 15 - St. Mark's

Each of these evenings will follow the same simple structure:
  • 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. - a simple supper (soup, salad, bread)
  • 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. - a service of prayer and song in the style of Taizé
  • 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. - a program based on the readings from the Letting Go meditation guide

We hope this format will allow everyone to come for part or all of these evening as we journey together through Lent.
Worship
In the Baptismal Covenant, we are asked, "Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?" and we respond, "I will, with God's help."
ashes
Ash Wednesday-  On Wednesday, February 10, we will gather at 7:00  AM    and 7:30 PM  to participate in this ancient liturgy. We will hear afresh the call to a holy Lent, and remember our own brokenness before God as we yearn for resurrection in our own lives and in the world. We hope you will come and be part of this powerful service.

Lend-a-Ride to Worship-  St. Mark's has a parishioner who lives in Skokie - just south of Howard Street between Skokie Boulevard and Crawford Avenue.  She would very much like a ride to the 10:30 a.m. worship on Sunday mornings.  If you are able to assist - even occasionally - please let Pastor Debra know ( [email protected] or 847-732-9564).
St. Mark's will be adding new members to the Altar Guild-  If you have considered serving with this enriching ministry team which involves preparing our altars for worship and would like more information please contact Pastor Debra at 847-864-4806, [email protected]  or Beth Johnson at [email protected] .  This is a once per month commitment, you will work with one or two partners, and it typically takes less than 1 hour. This ministry is open to men, women and teenagers.
Third Saturday Worship to Launch at St. Mark's-  On Saturday, February 20 at 4 p.m., St. Mark's will launch a once per month worship for those who cannot attend on Sunday mornings - or those who might prefer an occasional evening service.  This will create another opportunity to come together for prayer, Bible reading and reflection, and sharing the bread and cup of Christ with one another. Like all worship at St. Mark's, this service is a family-friendly, single-friendly, GLBTQ-friendly, married-with-no-kids-friendly, come-as-you-are-friendly, doubter-friendly, seeker-friendly service.  It is also a I've-never-been-to-church-friendly service - together we will learn and grown. For those of you with friends or neighbors who are "on the fence" about church, this might be a nice way to gently introduce them to our practice of praising God.

Formation
Lifelong Christian faith formation is important for lifelong growth in the knowledge, service and love of God as followers of Christ. Regardless of where you are on your spiritual journey, no matter what season of life you are in, you are invited to enter into a prayerful life of continuous learning. Following are some upcoming opportunities for your journey in faith.
Deepening Our Baptismal Spirituality through Lent-  Lent invites us to make our hearts ready for remembering Jesus' passion and celebrating Jesus' resurrection. It is historically a period of preparation in which persons receive instruction for baptism and profession of faith on Easter Sunday.  It is also a time for all Christians to deepen their baptismal spirituality, focusing with intention on the promises made in baptism.  If you would like to enter an intentional practice of prayer, scripture reading, and reflection on the baptismal covenant during this season of Lent, you are invited to meet in Bethlehem Chapel on Sunday mornings from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. on February 14, February 21, February 28, March 6, March 13 and, for an intergenerational conclusion on March 20.
Social Justice & Outreach Opportunities

St. Mark's continues its commitment to our community through its many social justice and outreach activities. Following are ways in which you can get involved with the St. Mark's community in helping to create a better world.

Producemobile: Tuesday, February 9-  On the 2nd Tuesday of each month, Interfaith Action of Evanston teams up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to bring free, fresh produce to our neighbors in need. The distribution takes place from 9:30 - 11:30 at the Robert Crown Center.  Volunteers are needed from 8:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.  If you are able to help on February 9, please send an e-mail to Pastor Debra, [email protected] or sign-up here .
CPR/AED Training with Evanston Heart Safe Community Project-  On February 14 from 10 am - 3 pm, St. Mark's will be a host site for the Evanston Heart Safe Community Project sponsored by the American Heart Association. This event is committed to equipping every Evanston resident with the basic skills of CPR for infants, children, and adults and the knowledge to operate an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). It is free to attend, and you can register the day of the event or by going online here . Trainings start every 30 minutes between the hours of 10 and 3, and will last approximately 30 minutes. Please come and learn this life-saving skill! Contact Anna Holladay, Community Engagement Director, with any questions at [email protected]  .
Midweek Lunch: Volunteers Needed
There are two weekly opportunities to serve our neighbors who struggle with hunger and homelessness. We pack lunches every Tuesday night at St. Mark's from 6:00-6:30 p.m., and then serve the lunches every Wednesday at St. Mark's. Volunteers to serve Wednesday lunch are asked to arrive by 10:30 a.m. and stay until 1:00 p.m. We have now starting serving hot soup in addition to the sandwiches, and have also started using all compostable products! There are many ways for you to help. You can make this commitment to fit your schedule: weekly, monthly, or every once in a while!

Vision Keeper 2016 Every year Interfaith Action of Evanston holds its annual fundraiser in February and gives each faith community an opportunity to come together and celebrate common bonds of faith and service. At the dinner, each congregation honors an individual or a group as its Vision Keeper, a person or team who embodies values that positively impact both the faith community and the larger community.  St. Mark's 2016 Vision Keeper is John Lucadamo for his vision to create St. Mark's lunch program and his ongoing dedication to the ministry.  We hope you will join St. Mark's at the Vision Keepers Dinner on Sunday, February 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Orrington Hotel.  Please RSVP to Pastor Debra by February 10 ( [email protected] ).  The cost is $75 per person (check payable to Interfaith Action of Evanston).  In the meantime, please join in congratulating John Lucadamo!
Fellowship
Choir Fun(d)raiser-
"I wish it would not talk; it is always talking... And this new sound is so close to me; it is right at my shoulder, right at my ear, first on one side and then on another...."

"He talks very little.  Perhaps it is because he is not bright, and is sensitive about it and wishes to conceal it."

Obviously they're made for each other.  Come help read The Diaries of Adam and Eve, by Mark Twain, at the choir fundraiser, Saturday February 6 at 7:00 p.m., in the parlor.  The suggested donation is $20 per adult; kids free. All proceeds go to the organ/piano fund.  Drinks and dessert!  Sentimental hymns and secular songs!  Laugh about men and women and have a good time for St. Mark's!
pancakes
Pancakes for Everyone! Join Confirm not Conform students, mentors and their parents for an evening of bacon, sausage and pancakes with yummy toppings (including gluten-free pancakes) on Shrove Tuesday, February 9 from 5 - 7 p.m. in Cunningham Hall   . Requested donations are very reasonable: $5 adults, $2 children under 12 with a $12 maximum for families. Bring your children, bring your friends, bring your neighbors! Monies collected will help St. Mark's and St. Matthew's youth programming.   Can't come but want to help out?    Click here to see how you can donate food items for the event.   Students, mentors and parents. . . if you haven't signed up for a time slot to work, that same "click here" button will take you to the right place!
We will be hosting another free Community Movie Night on Feb. 20th at 7 pm! This time, the movie will be "Inside Out" (rated PG). Click to sign up to volunteer the night of the event, or there will be a paper sign up in the parlor during coffee hour. There is one additional way to volunteer this time: put up flyers! We want as many of our neighbors as possible to know they are invited. You can stop by the parlor to pick up flyers and choose a couple of locations with known community bulletin boards (or even better - think of places not on the list). There was a great turn out at December's movie night, and we hope you can come and enjoy a free movie, eat popcorn, and get to know our neighbors! Contact Anna Holladay, Community Engagement Director, with questions or suggestions at [email protected]
Other Announcements
Hear the church bells of St. Mark's Episcopal Church on the radio!  91.5 WBEZ Chicago recently reached out to David Plank, Associate for Music Ministries for a tour of the church bells. The chime (what our 9-bell instrument is called) was installed in 1901 and is a rich part of our musical history. Their story "Who Tolls the Bells in Chicago?" will be broadcast today in the afternoon (around 3 and 5:30) and Saturday morning around 8:20. There are also photos and sound clips online . More can also be found on St. Mark's Facebook page, and homepage under music.
Gifts of stock-  You may be interested in making a donation of appreciated stock to St. Mark''s. Please email Chris Schultze at [email protected]  and she will provide you with the information you need to make a transfer.
Giving Envelopes are now available in the Parlor. If you do not see a box with your name on it and would like envelopes, please let Natalie in the church office know, [email protected].
Ice-  While we have been diligent in shoveling and salting the walkways to and around St. Mark's, please do remember that with fluctuations in temperature, icy patches can appear despite our best efforts. Please use great care when driving and walking. And, if you notice a particularly icy area, please notify an usher on Sunday or, during the week, let a staff member know.
Social Media and St. Mark's
If you have your mobile device it would be good if you put it on silent when in worship. But if anything in Sunday's service-a prayer, reading, hymn or the sermon-moves you, please feel free to tweet it or post it to Facebook #StMarkEvanston.  While you're at it, "check-in" with us on Foursquare!

St. Mark's website has up-to-date information on all that's new at St. Mark's - including a current calendar of events - check it out. Also, find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @StMarkEvanston!

Evanston Creative Writing Meetup
If you like to write and want a supportive environment in which to write, join us! Each week, a member volunteers to provide writing prompts to spark our creativity (a first line, an object, a picture, a situation). For about 10-15 minutes we write and, if we feel like sharing, we read our creation aloud. This is not a critique group - only positive feedback is encouraged. We usually fit in 3 - 4 prompts per session.  Members range from young adults to octogenarians. You don't have to be a professional (or even a serious) writer to participate. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month in the Old Library at St. Mark's. For more information, go to meetup.com/Evanston-Creative-Writing-Group/
Evanston English Country Dance Group
This group meets every other Wednesday in Cunningham Hall. All dances are taught and prompted. We learn English Country dances devised from pre-1650 to the present. Jane Austin would recognize much of the dancing we do. Once a month, we have live music performed by Putting on Aires; the other Wednesdays, the music is from an extensive CD collection. You are welcome to come with or without a partner. Wear comfortable shoes (the type you would use to walk a mile) and casual clothing. We ask for a $5 ($3 for students) admittance fee to cover the rent and to buy music for the band. For further information, contact Tom Senior 847-606-8704, [email protected].
Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese martial art that promotes well-being by circulating the chi of the body through a series of slow, relaxing movements.  The Human Process teaches the Yangstyle short form each Saturday morning at St. Mark's.  Practicing Tai Chi helps replenish energy reserves, improves balance, loosens tight muscles and brings more flexibility to joints and ligaments.  It is a cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise.  For more information, contact The Human Process at 847-556-6040.
Soul Mates is an ongoing support group for those who have experienced the death of a spouse or life partner. This free group meets at NorthShore Hospice, 4901 Searle Parkway, Skokie on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 6:30 - 8 p.m.
