March 19th - Teams Only
March 20th and 21st - Free and Open to the Public

Join in the fun and cheer on over 60 high school teams from around the world as they compete for two days at VCU's Stuart C. Siegel Center.  "The varsity Sport for the Mind," FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology.  Under strict rules, limited resources and time limits, teams of 15-25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.  Each year, the FRC challenge is as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. All teams received the same components, but NO INSTRUCTIONS to accomplish their engineering challenge. Teams have just six weeks to design, program and build their robots. The FRC game challenge and rules are new each year.

Hands on activities will be available for younger children and Tech Row will highlight the latest in technological advances.

Team Spotlight: Lord of the Bricks (7039)
One Family's Journey on the FLL- FTC Continuum

"My son started our FIRST journey in the FLL 2010 Body Forward season with another team; however, the team did not make it to competition.  The following year, during Food Factor, Lord of the Bricks was formed with me, his mom, as the coach.  I learned as much that year from my team as they learned from me.  I had obviously expected them to learn some really great engineering skills. What I didn't expect was all the great life lessons that they learned, and that they shared with me.  I also never expected the "There is no exit strategy in FIRST" speech that I got during our first Coach's Meeting; I thought I had joined a cult!  It was an awe-inspiring experience, and I wanted to be able to continue to share it with my younger kids, as well as with other kids in our community.

When my son turned 14, he aged out of FLL.  We decided to form an FTC team.  My younger children were too young for FLL; however, I wanted to keep the FLL team going.  I made the decision to enlist help in order to add coaches for our FLL team, as well as a Jr. FLL team.  My stepfather became my FLL co-coach, and a parent of a younger teammate led our Jrs.  Thus, the Lord of the Bricks legacy was born!

"My youngest daughter had a stroke at birth, which resulted in right-hemisphere brain damage.  Her little hands shake fiercely, at times, and she has visual spatial difficulties.  She is also ADHD, dysgraphic, and severely dyslexic.  She joined our Jr. FLL team with much excitement, and zero experience.  As excited as she was to build, putting LEGOs together was extremely frustrating for her.  She never gave up, though.  Using the LEGOs, she has been able to let her imagination lead her to some amazing new creations - like the flying bus with a minibar during Super Seniors (I SWEAR that is not a reflection of our household!).  She also developed quite a talent for programming (much to the delight of her programmer mother).  She actually taught herself how to use the WeDo software...and I'm not ashamed to say she taught me, too!"

- Shari Robinson, Head Coach Lord of the Bricks Robotics
(FTC Team 7039,  FLL Team 9076,  Jr. FLL Team 933)

Lord of the Bricks is a primarily homeschool robotics team from Richmond, Virginia. They competed in the 2015 Virginia FTC State Championship on January 28th.

Volunteer/ Alumni Spotlight: Keith Walters
Keith Walters

Who's that guy with the green hair? Or in the case of the 2015 FTC State Championship, orange sparkly hair??! Why it's Keith Walters.

Keith is not only a longtime volunteer, he's an alumnus! He first became involved with FIRST in 1999, when as a freshman he joined his high school's FRC Team #306 in their rookie year.  Since then he has been involved in mentoring multiple FRC and FTC teams in the Virginia and DC area, and he even helped to create a few.

So what does Keith do as a volunteer? What DOESN'T he do! For FRC, Keith is a Judge Assistant and coordinator, helping with recruiting Judges and providing them with the resources they need to deliberate and keeping them on schedule with the event. (He also does this for the DC and Championship events.)  For FTC, he is on the VirginiaFIRST FTC Planning committee and wears whatever hat is necessary for the weekend, ranging from Event Manager, Volunteer Coordinator (before we found our wonderful Janet!), Judge Advisor, and Emcee.

Professionally, Keith is a Software Engineer, working for TapHere! Technology in Reston, VA. (He support a variety of Government and private sector enterprise and mobile solutions.) Keith graduated from Penn State University in 2006 with a Bachelors of Science.

"I continue to support FIRST events because of the positive impact it had on my life and my unwavering knowledge that this program, and programs like it, are going to change the world," Keith told us.

And, the hair?? Well, Keith replied, "I love the spirit and energy of all of the teams and they inspire me to carry on a tradition I started back in high school, to color my hair at every event I support."

Carry on Keith, carry on!
