RAISE THE ROOF: a message from Pat Turner, President/CEO

On one of the heaviest downpour days in May, when we thought just a few people would be there, God blessed us with another downpour. This downpour came in the form of volunteers, neighbors, community partners, and family members to witness our first Women Build home dedication in Raytown. The garage, kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and open bathroom were packed with Habitat supporters who welcomed Matrika and her daughter Zariah into their first home. Why was this Women Build Project so necessary?

Perhaps the following key factors propelled us to step out in faith, to use Matrika's home as a "tool" to educate our community. The intent of Habitat for Humanity International's Women Build Program is to enable Habitat affiliates globally to recruit, educate and empower women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable housing in their communities. Since 1998, Habitat Women Build initiatives
have taken place globally in more than 30 countries partnering with companies like Lowe's, Home Depot, and HGTV. Nationally more than 12 million children live in poverty - 1 in every 6. Of those 12 million 77% live in working households.  3.6 million children in the United States are suffering "worst-case" housing need with their families paying more than half of their income for rent, or living in overcrowded or substandard housing.  1/3 (15.6 million) U.S. households led by single women are living in poverty. More than 85% of Habitat homeowners all across the United States are women.

The long and faithful journey during this project was a reminder of God's goodness to us. This blessing has encouraged us to make a commitment to continue serving more families annually through a Women Build Project.

Matrika's mother had a powerful message to share at the house dedication, "When I look at this house,
I see God's love. There is no better word to describe my daughter's journey with this organization, than love. Habitat for Humanity truly is LOVE!"

Blessings,

SPOTLIGHT: Success of the Expanded Financial Literacy Program

In January 2015 Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity hired Neighborhood Revitalization Counselor - Crystal McLain - to serve the 88% of families who are pre-qualified for a Habitat home, but have not received assistance through our programs. You may have read a little bit about this program in our April E-News and our Spring newsletter.

Over the last five months, we have met with 58 families.  Each family has created a budget.

Here are a few exciting highlights of what has been happening:

  • One family consolidated five (5) installment loans into one manageable loan. The monthly payments were $600/month with interest rates over 30%, and now they are $148/month at 6% interest!

  • Four (4) families have applied for MHDC or USDA first time home-buyer programs, all have already been approved, with two closing on their homes this month!

  • Three (3) families have established new checking/savings accounts which will help them establish credit!

  • After working on budgeting, five (5) people have utilized the excess funds and paid down credit card debt.

  • Another client refinanced a car loan from 15% to 8% interest, saving $5200 over the life of the loan.

  • Two(2) people have increased their income by asking and getting a raise. This was possible by helping to build their self-esteem and confidence, which has led to increased financial equity.
Our families have been so successful on utilizing the tools and resources we have, and we are so proud of them! We want to share the work Truman Habitat has been able to do in our community to further serve families, that we want to tell the whole world!
