Kathy Sheehan

Students from Professor Mike Bienkowski's fall 2015 iThink 301 class at the Sage College of Albany were asked to develop a proposal in response to a question put to them by the City of Albany's mayor, Kathy Sheehan: What are some creative solutions for making Albany a welcoming city?

In late November, five students were invited to City Hall to discuss their idea, which was created over the course of the semester, and spent sixty minutes with Mayor Sheehan discussing their solution - a tiered mentoring program and college fair to help motivate the youth of Albany, N.Y. - and responding to questions. They were then invited back to provide more details about their proposal.

The students invited to the City Hall were Sarah Campolieta, Applied Biology; Krystyn Knockwood, Law and Society with Psychology Pathway; Sydney Lussier. Fine Arts Major, Art History Minor; Korrinne Newman, Public Polic; and Isehake Noory, Applied Biology, Pre-Med, PT.

Attending this meeting with the students were Mike Bienkowski, Associate Professor: iThink (Interdisciplinary Studies Department at Sage College of Albany), as well as Anne O'Brien-Carelli and Dahlia Herring of the Capital Region Refugee Roundtable.

Professor Bienkowski commented afterwards: "I was very proud of the students as they demonstrated the goals of this course - the use of teamwork to identify a systemic problem and then solve this problem in an innovative and very real-life process. These students have very diverse backgrounds and academic interests, yet they were able to use their respective skills in complementary ways to develop a solution to the mayor's challenge. At the meeting, they were able to engage the mayor in a serious discussion of both the problem and their proposed solution. This is the essence of the course and of how it prepares students for life after college."
