This New Year begins NNCG's tenth as a learning community of consultants dedicated to strengthening the field of philanthropy. In keeping with the time-honored tradition of January resolution making, I am writing about a few ways that our community can work together to renew our resolve.

Lifestyle experts advise that fruitful resolutions are realistic, well-planned and easy to track; they recommend getting support when needed. NNCG is renewing its commitment to being your resource and welcomes your input for our planning.
Our Steering Committee will gather at the end of this month for a 12-hour retreat to renew NNCG's strategic goals and objectives. There is little doubt that the organization will remain a place for consultants to learn and to connect with colleagues that share interests. One of the three priorities set in our 2011 strategic plan was to "promote thought leadership of NNCG members." The 2015 Foundation Review issue on philanthropy consulting, and series of related webinars, provided a venue for sharing knowledge and connecting more philanthropy consultants to our learning community.

NNCG Member seeks Family Foundation Referral
The National Center for Family Philanthropy has asked NNCG member Tony Macklin to write one of its longer Passages Issues Briefs. The title is "Expanding Your Comfort Zone: Managing Risk" and is based on a session he facilitated at NCFP's fall forum. He will be looking at assessing risk through five lenses (see attached diagram) - personal, strategy, grant/investment, organizational culture and brand, and external. He will also look at how families are taming unpredictability and even embracing uncertainty.
Tony is hoping to add 2-3 more mini-case studies to the piece and wonders if NNCG members knew of a family foundation or philanthropic family that:
- Actively talks about risk and/or has an informal or formal way of assessing it, and/or
- Has somehow included risk tolerance in its family values, mission, legacy statement, or similar documents.
If so, Tony would like reach out to that family in the next couple of weeks to see if they'd be willing to be part of the Issues Brief. He is happy to answer any questions via email or a call if you want to learn more before recommending someone.
