Milford Mourns Loss of Student
The Milford School Community is mourning the loss of Milford High School junior Lauren Wilfong from a car accident on January 24. Grief counselors from the Clermont County Crisis Team were at the high school last week to support our staff and students.
"Having Lauren as a student was an honor. She worked so hard for me in math and always had a smile on her face. I appreciated her hard work and effort she put in every day. I am blessed to have been her teacher and get to know her. She was and always will be an outstanding Eagle," said Milford Junior High School math teacher, Lauren Cooper.
Lauren's passing is a heartbreaking loss for our school community. Our condolences go out to her family and friends.
"On behalf of Milford High School, thank you to all for the continued support of our students and staff, and most importantly, for the Wilfong family. The response from the Milford community has been overwhelming and helped all of us cope with the loss of Lauren," said Milford Principal, Josh Kauffman.

State Releases Report Card; Milford Continues to Achieve at High Levels
The Ohio Department of Education is releasing the 2014-15 district and building report cards in two releases. The first release on January 14 included the K-3 literacy component; graduation rate; and prepared for success measure, which grades districts on how students fare with college admission tests. The state will release the remaining components - achievement, gap closing, and progress - as well as information about gifted students and district financial expenditures on February 25.
Milford Curriculum Directors, Dr. Jill Chin and Mr. John Spieser, presented results of this annual State Assessment at the January Board of Education meeting. Milford's results exceeded the state averages, and met state performance indicators in every area. In addition, 100% of our third grade students met the requirements for the third grade reading guarantee. Milford's four year and five year graduation rate were both rated an "A" by the state of Ohio. For further details, click on the links below.

City of Milford Purchases Main Property
At the January Board of Education meeting, the Board approved the City of Milford's offer to purchase property upon which Main is located (525 Main Street) after demolition and abatement from the district. The city will pay $360,000 for the property, which covers the price of teardown and demolition.
The district is currently processing contracts, bonds, insurance and other paperwork needed to begin the abatement and demolition process, which is expected to be completed in about two weeks. Abatement will occur first and will last approximately a month. When that is complete, the demolition will begin and will take 4-6 weeks to complete.
We are salvaging 500 bricks that will be made available through the Milford Schools Foundation. Details of that process are still in the planning stages and will be communicated when plans are finalized.

Pattison Needs Votes
for $10,000 Prize!

rs. Missy Breuer's 5th grade science classes at Pattison Elementary created a video for the Scotties "Why Trees Rock!" video contest. Pattison's video was selected as one of the nation's top ten finalists and they need help to win the contest and $10,000 for outdoor education.

Registration for part-time and full-time kindergarten in Milford Schools began on January 4, 2016. To insure your child has a place in the full-day program at your local elementary, it is important to call soon to schedule an appointment with Mr. Jay Batterson, Central Registration, at (513) 576-4178.
A lottery will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016, at 4 p.m. to determine who is admitted into the full-day program. A $100 deposit is required on the day of registration, but will be refunded if your child is not chosen through the lottery.
After February 12, kindergarten registration will continue for full-day kindergarten classes until all full-day classes in each elementary building are full. Registration will also continue for half-day classes by appointment.
The cost of the full-day option is $3,000 a year. Scholarships and reduced fees are available for those families that qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program.

Milford Preschool Registration
2/11 & 2/17
Milford Exempted Village School District is holding open registration for its Preschool program for the 2016-2017 school year on Thursday, February 11
and Wednesday, February 17, from 4-7 p.m. If you are unable to make either day, registration can be done after February 19, by appointment on school days from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Milford Preschool is located at 1039 State Route 28.
Milford's Preschool offers a 3-year old 4-day integrated program and a 4-year old 5-day integrated program. This program is a mix of eight special needs students and eight typically developing students.

Milford High School senior Kristen Dalrymple has just been named a finalist in the Duke Energy Difference Maker Awards. Kristen founded a student-run organization called Children for Change dedicated to making a big difference in the community. It is a charitable organization that empowers high school students to teach elementary level students how to be the future leaders of their communities. They do this through volunteering, lessons, and on-site training at our Milford elementary schools.
Kristen is one of 17 youth and community honorees who will be recognized for their inspiring work and dedication at the 8th annual Difference Makers celebration on Saturday, February 6, at Cincinnati Museum Center.

Seipelt Student Illustrates Book Cover
Seipelt 3rd grader,
Lana Lemke, is now a published artist! Her artwork was selected for the cover of the children's book "Is My Brain Broken?" by Deborah Lee. The book is about children with epilepsy. Being diagnosed with a neurological disease is scary for children and their parents. While the book contains explanations of the disease processes by a pediatric neurologist in easy-to-understand terms meant for children, the heart of the book are the essays written by the children themselves. It is especially meaningful for the Lemke family because two of Lana's siblings have seizures.

Milford Art Students Earn 28 Scholastic Art Awards!

Kudos to Milford High School's art department and our talented students! A total of 28 works of art by Milford High School students were recognized during the 2016 Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition. Ten works received Honorable Mention; ten works were granted a Silver Key; and a total of eight works earned a Gold Key award. The Gold Key winners include
Linneah Deighton, Molly Keplinger, Lydia Krage, Miranda Kunes (two pieces), Kaitlyn Seals, Megan Vance and Mikaela W
illiams. Gold Key recipients will go on to compete for national medals in an Exhibit and National Award Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Board Discusses Final Phase of Master Facilities Plan
O
n January 28, Milford Board of Education held a work session to discuss future construction plans in the district. At the Board meeting on January 7, approval was given to file paperwork for the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) to complete the final phase of the Master Facilities Plan. The district is now in the queue for state funding in 2017 to complete plans for the building of a new junior high school and final phase of renovation to Milford High School.
SHP Design lead architect, Charlie Jahnigen, who designed the new Seipelt and Boyd E. Smith buildings, led the session. The goals of the meeting were to help the Board and administrators establish a greater understanding of the scope of the project needs for Milford Junior High School and High School and to set a timeline.
The next step in the process is to form a steering committee with Board members, district administrators, building principals, athletic director, staff members, parents and students to further evaluate the options and create plans that can be shared with the community for feedback. A community survey (phone and online) will also be conducted to gain feedback on the facilities plan before the district moves forward with a bond issue.
