Artistic Photography on Exhibit
February 5th & 6th
And Enjoy Award-Winning Photography on Extended Exhibit  in the MSB Atrium Display Window

The SSF Cultural Arts Commission invites the public to its first 2016 art gallery show, a Photography Exhibit. This two-day, juried event will feature variety of subjects, including  action scenes, nature, landscapes, animals, cityscapes and people. Selected works will be available for purchase. There will be an extended exhibit of award-winning works in the Municipal Services Building atrium display window following the show. 

The event will be held at the Betty Weber Gallery, at the Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo Drive, South San Francisco. Event dates are Friday, February 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 6, from 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.

2016 Events Calendar Announced
The 2016 Parks and  Recreation  Special Events program has been announced!  Check out our brochure by clicking here , and save these dates for a great time with your community members. In addition to movie nights, art exhibits, volunteer activities, a 5K run, and sports events, we're once again hosting a concert in the park! Cultural Arts Commission Scholarship

The Cultural Arts Commission is awarding a $500 scholarship to a graduating SSFUSD senior who has shown achievement in the arts, which includes all forms of visual arts. Student applicants must be graduating SSFUSD seniors planning on continuing studies in the arts. There is a possibility of one winner at each of the three high schools in SSF: South San Francisco High School, El Camino High School, Baden High School. If there is more than one finalist in any school, the winner may be chosen by interview.

The award and check will be presented at each school's Senior Awards Night. The finalist will also be invited to a second presentation at a televised City Council meeting. The finalist's original art may be featured in an extended exhibit at the Municipal Services Building. Completed applications must be received by Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Chinese New Year Celebration: Social Ballroom Dance
Join the Parks and Recreation Department's Senior Services program for a Chinese New Year Ballroom Dance event at the MSB Social Hall on Friday, February 5 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. For $6, you can enjoy a day of dance, performances, and lunch. Middle School Basketball Places 1st

Congratulations to two of our eighth grade basketball teams for winning the championship in their divisions! The Parks and Recreation Department's 8A and 8B boys' teams won the championship this week, with our 8A Boys completed an undefeated season by going 12-0. The 8B boys' team finished the regular season in second place and defeated the top seed in the final game to win their championship. Way to go!

Orange Pool Open on Sundays
Don't forget, Orange Pool is open for all to enjoy every Sunday!  Follow our Pinterest board for swim workouts and tips as well as health information and safety information for children and swimming pools.

Adult Lap Swim: 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Adult Rec Swim: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
All Ages Rec Swim: 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Lessons and Classes: 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Note: Advanced registration is required for lessons and classes.

Youth Government Day  
The Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating February as "Youth Leadership Month" by offering the Youth in Government Program again for the 35th consecutive year to local high school students.  Youth Government Day began in 1981 under the leadership of Mayor Roberta Teglia and then high school government teacher Gene Mullin.  The program was designed as a hands-on learning experience for high school seniors, where they shadow a city staff or elected counterpart and participate in a mock city council meeting.

Spring Class Registration

Spring class registration is almost here! Activity guides will be in the mail and posted online the week of February 8. All South San Francisco residents can register for classes beginning on Tuesday, February 16 and Non-Residents can begin registering on Tuesday, March 1. Monday, February 15 is a holiday, and offices are closed. For more information please call our Recreation Office at (650) 829-3800.

FREE Health Workshop
The Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Health Trust, will be offering 6 free health workshops at the Magnolia Senior Center. You'll learn how to eat healthy, improve sleep quality, fight depression, manage your weight, work with healthcare professionals, and more! Refreshments will be provided. Help Junior Giants win $10,000 in Grant Money!
The Giants Community Fund is now a part of the excitement surrounding the Big Game being held in the Bay Area, February 7, 2016! The Fund applied for and will receive a $10,000 grant through the 50 Fund, the Legacy Fund of the San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee, and the StubHub Foundation.

Now the Giants Community Fund needs our SSF Junior Giants community's help! The fund has an opportunity to receive an additional $10,000 grant through the StubHub Fan's Choice Program.
The top five vote-getters will win an additional $10,000.

Voting will take place through Friday, February 5th.
Winners will be announced at StubHub's "Fan Fair" -- a pregame experience at California's Great America on February 7, 2016.

 85th Annual Easter Egg Hunt
The Parks and Recreation Department's 85th Annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for Saturday, March 19th at 9:00 a.m. at the Orange Park Picnic Shelter. There will be two hunt areas (rain or shine): one for children ages 5 years and under and the other for children ages 6 - 8 years old. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to egg drop to listen to instructions. Children should bring a bag/basket to collect their eggs. Visit with the Easter Bunny from 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 am. Refreshments will also be available for sale, provided by the SSF Friends of Parks and Recreation.

Utility Box Mural Project

The Cultural Arts Commission invites artists and creative community members to Color Our Streets EXTRAORDINARY by transforming drab utility boxes into awe-inspiring works of art! Distinctive images that celebrate beauty, offer a positive outlook and create a sense of place are welcome. Designs that reflect the history, character or culture of South San Francisco are encouraged.

Facility and Picnic Rentals
Now Taking Reservations for 2016
The Parks and Recreation Department is now taking reservations for both indoor facility rentals and picnic sites. 

We offer several halls and meetings spaces for nearly any event, including corporate meetings, weddings, dances, birthday celebrations, and banquets.  We also offer 16 outdoor picnic sites for groups up to 150. Each site has barbeque pits and tables.

Save the Date for Two Upcoming Cultural Art Events
Youth Art Show & "All a Flutter"- A Quilting Exhibit
 
Mark your calendars for the two upcoming sensational spring time art gallery events. The Youth Art Show, on April 15 & 16, features hundreds of visual art exhibits created by students from the SSF Unified School District. Youth performing artists are also featured in this wildly exciting program. On May 13 and 14, the theme is butterflies and all things spring, as the community is invited to enjoy an amazing array of quilts and other textile arts in "All a Flutter" - A Quilting Exhibit.
 
Both events will be open to the public and take place at the South San Francisco Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo Drive. Admission is free. Programs for Children
Science Club
Kids 6 and older, come to the library to learn a cool science concept and do a science experiment! We will learn and do a different experiment each month. Join us on Wednesday, February 3 at 4:00 PM to learn about Marshmallow Engineering!
 
S.T.E.A.M for Young Children
Join us for a series of hands-on activities for children 1-5 years-old featuring a S.T.E.A.M  activity! In February we will explore Science! This program will be offered twice a month at two different locations,
Thursday, February 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Learning Center, 520 Tamarack Lane
Friday, February 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the South San Francisco Main Library, 840 W Orange Avenue
 
Yoga for Kids
Kids 6-9 years old, join us for a yoga and mindfulness program on Saturday, February 6 at 10:30 a.m. Learn techniques on how to reduce and prevent toxic stress and gain a healthy social and emotional well-being. Limited yoga mats will be provided for use for this program.
 
Lunar New Year
Celebrate Lunar New Year with us on Saturday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m.  Author Oliver Chin will be reading from his book The Year of the Monkey: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac, the eleventh story in the popular children's picture book series on the twelve charismatic animals of the Chinese New Year.
 
Tween Crafts
Craft with us at the library! This month's craft activity is just in time for Valentine's Day! Sophie's World will host a Valentine's Candy Craft on Tuesday, February 12 at 4:00 p.m.
 
LEGO Club
Join us on Wednesday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m. for this month's theme build and make airplanes! After you make your amazing creations, we will display them in the children's area.
 
Kids Book Clubs
Stop by the front desk at the library to register for the book club and to pick up your free copy of the book (while supplies last). Registration opens the first day of the month! Read the book throughout the month, then we'll meet at the end of the month for discussion and activities. For more information call (650) 829-3860. 

Bookmunchers (for kids ages 5-8) will meet Thursday, February 18, 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. at the Main Library. The book for this month will be "Valentine's Day" or "Friday the 13th" both from the Black Lagoon.
 
Page Turners (for kids ages 9-12) will meet Thursday, February 25, 6:00 p.m. at the Main Library. The book for this month will be "Savvy" by Ingrid Law.
 
Board Games
Enjoy board games at the library! Join us on Tuesday, February 23 at 4:00 p.m. and bring your family and friends to learn a new game or play an old favorite. We have over 40 board games for you to choose from! If you're interested in a specific game, ask us. We probably have it!
 
Black History Month Performance
Join us at the library on Saturday, February 20 at 2:30 PM for a lively presentation by Poet and musician Kathy Z. Price. There will be storytelling, music, dancing, and a caterpillar-butterfly kazoo craft!  Kathy Z. Price is the author of the award-winning picture book The Bourbon Street Musician!  Poet and musician Kathy Z. Price made her debut in the children's-book field in 2002 with the publication of The Bourbon Street Musicians. Based on the traditional folk tale "The Bremen Town Musicians," Price's story entertains younger listeners with a lyrical text that swings with the music of New Orleans jazz. Kathy Price is also a musician and poet, and recipient of New York Foundation of the Arts Poetry Fellowship. - Kathy Z. Price's Bio.

The Cartoon Art Museum Visits SSFPL
Thursday, February 11th, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.
Andrew Farrago, curator of the Cartoon Art Museum, will share highlights of the museum's collection and talk about the museum's history as well as its future.  The Cartoon Art Museum is a celebration of cartoon art in all its various forms from comic books, to editorial cartoons, anime, and more. The museum just celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Tara Fields PhD, The Love Fix Repair and Restore Your Relationship Right Now
Thursday, February 18th, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.
Love in the Library month continues with author, therapist, and relationship expert Dr. Tara Fields. Her book The Love Fix: Repair and Restore Your Relationship Right Now discusses the common conflicts couples encounter while providing steps to move on from those issues so the relationship can be healed.  Dr. Fields has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Oz, and Dr. Phil.
