Biology Students go on Goose Chase in the Prairie
Biology classes went to Wildcat Habitat Preserve, the prairie next to Central Middle School, as an introduction to the Ecology unit.  Students used the GooseChase App to conduct an electronic scavenger hunt.  Throughout the activity, students were able to earn points by completing missions, view the leaderboard, and compete for the win.  Students had a great time exploring the prairie on a beautiful day, used their phones for educational purposes, and got some exercise all while learning about ecology!

Safety Drill Practice - October 1
On Thursday, October 1, 2015, HUHS will be conducting several safety drills in the afternoon.  We are running these drills in conjunction with the Hartford Police Department.  Please do not be alarmed when you see an increased police presences that afternoon.  We will, as part of the drill, be practicing our off-campus evacuation procedures.  This will involve police blocking off access to the school from the surrounding roads. If you are coming to the high school at that time, you will not be able to gain access.  The evacuation drill will run from approximately 1:20-2:20 PM.
We will be using a modified bell schedule to accommodate the drills.

What do teachers do when students have off?
While many teachers have more than a bachelor's degree, that doesn't stop them from learning more.  On Friday, September 18, HUHS teachers participated in a professional learning day to collaborate and learn with colleagues.  The focus of for the day was how to provide deeper learning experiences for students through delivering rich content in innovate ways to allow students to learn and apply what they have learned.  Teachers across disciplines planned how to connect content from different courses through projects and activities.  Examples include connecting chemistry and auto, connecting algebra and welding, connecting creative writing and art, and connecting military history and literature.  Teachers also engaged in ways to make assessments more meaningful for students and teachers.  You can check out some of the conversations on Twitter at #huhsedchat.

PSAT/NMSQT for Juniors
College-bound juniors should consider taking the PSAT/NMSQT, which is the best preparation for the SAT and entry into the National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs. It is an optional exam that measures critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills that are important for success in college. Students do not have to recall facts from literature, history, science, or math formulas. This test measures reasoning and critical thinking skills.

All students who take the PSAT/NMSQT will receive an official score report. They will receive scores for critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills and will see how their score compares to those of other students across the country. Students will be able to see which answers they got right or wrong. They will also receive information about how they performed on specific academic skills.

Students who take the test will receive free access to My College QuickStart, an online college and planning tool that contains an online PSAT/NMSQT Score Report; a customized SAT Study Plan; a personality test; and personalized lists of colleges, majors, and careers. For more information, visit www.collegeboard.org .

Registration for the PSAT is due Friday, October 9 at 3:00pm in the Student Services Office. The cost for the PSAT is $20 and checks should be made payable to HUHS. The exam will be given on Wednesday, October 14 from 7:25am to 11:00am. At the time of registration, students will be given a student guide that includes test-taking tips and a practice test.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Student Services Office at 670-3200, ext. 214 or [email protected].

Badger Girls State - Summer of 2015
This past summer, Seniors Amy Holzer and Elisha Jaeke were selected as the Badger Girls State representatives for HUHS. The girls traveled to UW-Oshkosh to learn more about how the government works and to network with other girls that had the same interests and skills. Both girls made life-long friendships and had an amazing experience. Here are a few pictures of their time at UW-Oshkosh. Note: Elisha is pictured with former Wisconsin Supreme Court chief justice, Shirley Abrahamson. The girls got to meet Governor Walker and other members of our state government while learning first-hand and setting up their own government throughout the week.
