February 2016
In This Issue

2016 is already shaping up to be an exciting year for asset management in Canada. In January , we saw the release of the 2016 Canadian Infrastructure Report Card (CIRC), of which CNAM was heavily involved. (D etails follow below on an upcoming webinar with Alain Gonthier (past CNAM chair) provid ing insights into the developments and key findings of the CIRC ) .

L
ook ing back at 2015, CNAM has been instrumental in many industry events and accomplishments:
  • Early in 2015, CNAM was involved in the re-initiation of the National Infrastructure Round Table.
  • CNAM's Vancouver conference in May was once again a huge success and the primary event for public infrastructure asset management within Canada.
  • 2015 also brought forward the formation and initial meeting of the CNAM Regional Round Table (CNAM RRT) for asset management. This meeting took place at the CNAM conference and included representation from CNAM (Canadian Network of Asset Managers), AMBC (Asset Management B.C.), IAMA (Infrastructure Asset Management Alberta), NWT (North West Territories), OCSI (Ontario Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure), FCM (Federation of Canadian Municipalities), and AM SASK (Asset Management Saskatchewan).
  • Throughout last year a suite of topical webinars were also brought forward to provide additional value to our members.
  • And CNAM's significant involvement in the CIRC. Alain Gonthier, past chair and current board member, was chair of the advisory board.
In addition, throughout 2015 the position and focus of CNAM as an association has evolved to be much more than just municipal infrastructure. As we enter into our 10th year as an association, we have fully expanded our focus to all public infrastructure within Canada. This was reflected by the addition of new streams within our conference program and through the development of our new strategic plan. We very much look forward to continuing down this path through 2016 and beyond.

2016 Canadian Infrastructure Report Card

Register Early!
Webinar - Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 11 am to 12 pm (EST)
Presenter:   Alain Gonthier
Moderator:   John Murray

The 2016 Canadian Infrastructure Report Card was released on January 18, 2016.  The report card was developed to present the state of municipal infrastructure and the state of asset management in Canada.  It provides a national perspective on the physical condition of municipal roads, bridges, potable water, wastewater and storm water systems, municipal buildings, sport and recreation facilities and public transit.

The report card shows a clear national trend - the rate of renewal of essential community infrastructure across the country needs to be increased to maintain the quality of service and save money in the long run. The survey of municipalities across the country also found more than a third of municipal infrastructure was assessed as in fair, poor or very poor condition representing a call for action.

The report is helping to shape the political discussion related to the need for all levels of government to invest in existing infrastructure.

Alain Gonthier, Past-Chair of CNAM, was instrumental in the development of the report card in his role as Chair of the Canadian Infrastructure Report Card Advisory Board.  During the webinar, Alain will be providing his insight into the development of the report card and its key findings.

The FCM Sustainable Communities Conference  is being held in Ottawa from February 9 - 11th, with lots of content of interest to asset management professionals.

Bradley Leeman, Chair of CNAM is one of several trainers in a full day workshop developed in partnership by FCM and CNAM.  The workshop  will highlight how AM can help to enable integrated planning  and development decisions that support sustainability.  Lifecycle costing tools used or piloted in Edmonton and Prince George will be featured.   While that workshop is already full, you can still register for a full day training on the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure's " Envision", a decision making tool for sustainable infrastructure; it will allow participants to qualify to pursue ISI Envision certification.  Or join the training on Best Practice in Wastewater Treatment: Lessons from the Green Municipal Fund and the City of Ottawa.  The training includes former CNAM Chair Alain Gonthier, who will speak on asset management and procurement, plus a site visit of the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre (ROPEC).

The conference is also offering a workshop on February 11 called Making Natural Assets Count, in which the Town of Gibsons, BC and the Credit Valley Conversation will share their exciting work to bring natural assets more explicitly into municipal asset management practices and infrastructure design.
