SAT - A NEW FORMAT
ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE NEW SAT FORMAT?
The SAT test as we know it, with 3 sections - critical reading, writing and math, and scored out of 2400, has been written for the last time.   The new format, has 2 sections - evidence-based reading and writing; and math, each scored out of 800 for a total of 1600, and will be introduced on March 5.
The new format will not have a penalty for incorrect answers as the old format did.   It will be a 3 hour test vs the 3 hour 45 minute length of the previous format, and the test is now available in print or on computer.
Regardless of the format, the key is to be well prepared for the test.   Signing up for a prep course, getting a study book from chapters or doing the college board sample questions are all good ways to prepare for the test.
Reminder that the SAT test should be written in the Grade 11 year.
SCHOOL VISITS
HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY?
Last month we talked about finding the 'right fit' academically and athletically.
Visiting the college campus, meeting with the coaching staff, sitting in on a class, meeting the players, spending the night, and getting a sense of the team atmosphere is of the utmost importance in finding the 'right fit'.
It is imperative that you have a general overall feel for the school and athletic program.  It is, not only important to be able to envision yourself in the environment, but is it a place you can thrive in.
These visits are also a great way for the student-athlete to convince the college coach that you are seriously interested in their program.

  OFFICIAL AND UNOFFICIAL VISITS
Unofficial Visit  -  Even though an unofficial visits are done at your own expense, they are imperative.   The Grade 10 year is prime time for an unofficial visit.  For top recruits it may be sooner.   You can make as many unofficial visits as you wish.  They will help you narrow down your list of schools.  Don't count the 'drive through' visit that you do as a family vacation as an unofficial visit.  Unofficial visits are set up with the coaching staff.
Official Visits - are financed in whole or more likely in part by the school.  DI prospects are allowed up to 5 official visits and they are done in your Grade 12 year.   DII or DIII have no limit.   It is best that you have been doing unofficial visits well before your Gr. 12 year.

THE RECRUITING PROCESS
AN ATHLETE'S PERSPECTIVE

by Matt Iceton - Men's Golf
NCAA Division II Junior - West Liberty Hilltoppers

If I could offer one tip in the recruiting process it would be to " Never Leave a Stone Unturned".  After receiving offers, I was trying to decide between four schools when I received an e-mail from another school.  My Dad and I went to visit the last school and it turned out to be my perfect fit, academically and athletically.  When I was at West Liberty University, I knew that it was the school for me.  It is important to research the schools that you are interested in and not accept the first offer that comes your way unless you know for sure that it is the right one for you.
