Bring On 2016

Balance is one of the keys to a successful and happy life.  Now that the New Year rush is over, take a moment to make sure that you are still making time for rest and other activities you enjoy.  One of the biggest mistakes in fitness is to overwork your body trying to make up for lost time.  By making a plan to fit exercise and wellness into your everyday life you will stick with it and see lasting results.  Remember people never plan to fail, they fail to plan.

Allie Alspaugh   -

Allie's story is one of determination. She set out to improve her life and did it the right way by changing old bad habits into new healthy ones. Continue below to read her story of transformation.

Wow!  What a difference a year can make!  I feel SO much better both inside and out.  Finally, I have more energy and now feel like the healthy, young person I should.  This journey wasn't easy by any means, but I'm not even done yet. Today, I'm full of determination.  It all started with just a little running and working out with my awesome friends and husband.  From there it escalated into a lifestyle of healthy habits.  I went from only being able to run continuously for about a half mile, to running a first half marathon and registering for my first full marathon in March.  I am so thankful for the awesome facility HealthWorks provides for our community.  I couldn't be where I am today without it.

If I can do it, anyone can!  Get determined and "just do it"!

Coach's Corner

This month we are highlighting the Chest Press using the TRX Suspension Training System found on the 2nd floor.  This exercise is highly effective and great for any level of fitness.

FYI:  TRX = Total Body Resistance Exercise
The TRX Suspension Trainer was created after years of extensive research and development.  It is constructed to exceed the demands of the most extreme training environments, yet it remains easy to use.  For more information on how to use TRX in our functional training area, contact one of our trainers on the 2nd floor.
Tips for Heart Health Month
February is Heart Month so let's take a look at healthy fats.

When it comes to heart health and the question of what food most people think they should avoid, the answer is "fats".  While it is true in large amounts some fat is bad for your health (and waistline), there are some fats we can't live without.  Among them are Omega-3 fatty acids.

This healthy fat plays a vital role in the health of every cell membrane in the body and helps tremendously to reduce heart disease.  Where do we get Omega-3 fatty acids?
Walnuts
Some fruits and vegetables (try a vegetable smoothie at The Juice Bar)
Coldwater fish (herring, mackerel, anchovies and salmon)
Chia seeds, and more...

Other important benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids are: reducing the risk of stroke, symptoms of hypertension, depression, ADHD, joint pain and other rheumatoid problems, certain skin ailments, and they protect us from an array of illnesses including Alzheimer's disease.  Protect your health by adding Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet.

As an added bonus, Click here for some good advice from Dr. Ann Kulze about fish oil supplements.

In health and happiness!   TC
