Making The Alameda Safer
|
The Alameda from Hopkins to Solano will be put on a road diet, with construction beginning the week of August 12th. The road will be restriped from four lanes to three, with outside lanes for traffic, a center lane for left-hand turns and dedicated bike lanes for bicyclists and right turns.
This marks the culmination of a three-year process exploring ways to make The Alameda safer for pedestrians and bicyclists while minimizing the impact on auto traffic.
The goal is to:
- Improve pedestrian safety, particularly around the library.
- Improve the safety of left turns.
- Improve cycling safety by creating bike lanes.
- Improve safety for exiting parked cars.
- Provide room for residents to back out of their driveways.
- Eliminate the south bound merge lane below Hopkins.
- Reduce traffic speeds.
Parking along this stretch of The Alameda will be prohibited during construction. There may be traffic delays but no road closures.

EBMUD Work near Fire Station 7
|
EBMUD will be upgrading their pumps at their facility located at Shasta Rd. and Bay Tree Lane, next to Fire Station 7, starting in August, 2013. The pumps there are over 50 years old and have reached the end of their useful life. Construction work is expected to last for at least 10 months, and includes the replacement of the existing pumps, motors, electrical components and internal cranes. The Shasta reservoir property at the end of Bay Tree lane will be used for staging and parking. Noise and traffic are expected during construction, but water service will not be impacted.
If you have any questions or concerns now or during construction, contact the EBMUD Community Affairs office at 510 287-2053 or Michelle Blackwell at: [email protected]. After hours call EBMUD at 1-866-403-2683

Cyclists - I Want To Hear From You!
|
Do you cycle on Wildcat Canyon Rd? Wildcat Canyon Rd. is a very popular route for recreational cyclists from all over the Bay Area. If you have an opinion on the road conditions on Wildcat in Berkeley, please send me an email at: [email protected].
I recently reviewed the very poor pavement condition on Wildcat Canyon Rd., and I need your help to convince the city to put resources into making this road safe for bicyclists. I am interested to hear your stories and opinions about the hazards to cyclists posed by the current pavement conditions.
Thanks!
