Mayor Kriseman officially thanked the St. Petersburg Pier Selection Committee and relieved them of their duties during a meeting in his office on Thursday, May 21.

 

Michael Connors, Public Works Administrator for the City of St. Petersburg, and his team have begun negotiations with the design team of ASD/Rogers Partners Architects + Urban Designers/ KSLA. It is estimated that negotiations will be completed and sent to City Council for approval by July, 2015.

Tampa Bay Times: Additional money may enhance area near new St. Petersburg pier


 
Mayor Rick Kriseman has said that the budget for the new pier is firm, but a financial windfall or two may change that.

 

Of the $50 million originally budgeted for the project, about $4.5 million has already been spent, intensifying the challenge to conjure up amenities that residents have said will hold their interest in the downtown fixture.

A St. Petersburg police officer shot in the line of duty Sunday night continues to recover.

Officer Michael Cordiviola was shot in the leg while trying to arrest a shooting suspect. He remains in the hospital.

St. Petersburg Tribune: Pinellas leaders weigh future use of county's tourist tax

 

With the possibility of still more tourism tax money coming their way, Pinellas County commissioners held off Tuesday on deciding how to split the roughly $35 million a year it now collects.

 

The county's Tourism Development Council proposed capping tourist tax money to allow no more than 40 percent to be used for capital and building projects, leaving the remainder for the council's ambitious and successful advertising and promotion campaigns.

Bay News 9: Their job is done: Pier Selection Committee relieved of duties
 

Today, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman officially thanked the new St. Petersburg Pier Selection Committee and relieved them of their duties. 

 

Kriseman's selection committee was charged with ranking the top three designs based on their qualifications, including how they conform to the $33 million construction budget and build schedule. A non-binding public poll was one of the factors taken into account.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Pete City Council approves Southside CRA

 

The City Council unanimously approved the Southside Community Redevelopment Area on Thursday.

 

Council member Karl Nurse has led the political efffort to create the CRA and use the property tax proceeds generated from the tax-increment-financing district within its boundaries to fund affordable housing and other redevelopment efforts instead of more traditional TIF uses like streelights, utilities and street improvements.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg City Council requires city contractors to hire 'disadvantaged' workers 
 
 

Contractors on big-ticket city projects will be required to fill 10 percent of their jobs with "disadvantaged workers" after the City Council unanimously approved a hiring ordinance Thursday.

 

The ordinance requires contractors to reserve 10 percent of work hours for workers either with criminal records or who have received some form of public assistance in the previous year.
