Today we begin to use the "O Antiphons" as the Gospel Acclamations at Mass. "O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge!"

The wisdom of our God Most High has blessed us to understand the true meaning of Christmas: Christ the Savior is born. In the midst of our last minute shopping and preparing for the feast, may we be ever more grateful for the gift Emmanuel, God with us.

Here at Notre Dame School the path of knowledge has led some seniors to early acceptances into College of Mt. St. Vincent, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Purdue, Quinnipiac, and University of Scranton to name a few. We are proud of them and their teachers as well. Please stay in touch with us as we add to this ever growing list.

Meanwhile, enjoy the read of this edition of Chez News. May Emmanuel remove any sadness that hinders us from feeling the hope and joy which are Christmas gifts to us all.

Warm regards,

Dr. Virginia O'Brien, S.U.
Notre Dame Junior works for Climate Justice
The day after Thanksgiving, while millions across the country were rushing to local malls for Black Friday deals, Victoria Barrett , a junior at Notre Dame, was boarding a plane to Paris.  The 16 year-old from White Plains was not traveling to visit the Louvre or The Cathedral of Notre Dame, she was headed to
Victoria meeting with Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Environment and Energy of The Maldives.

Europe on business. Victoria, along with the likes of President Barack Obama, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and German  Chancellor Angela Merkel, arrived in Paris for COP21 also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference. For the past three years, Victoria has been actively involved in educating others and calling for action regarding the harmful effects of climate change and global warming. She is an active member of Global Kids and ACE, the Alliance for Climate Education. Victoria is also involved with Our Children's Trust and is one of 21 American teens suing the federal government for the funding and extensive use of fossil fuels in the United States.

Climate Education Coordinator
at The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration.
This fall, ACE asked Victoria to travel to the COP21 conference as an ACE fellow. During her two week trip to  Paris, Victoria, who was cited by Bloomberg News as one of the top 10 attendees to watch at COP21 met with world leaders, government officials and fellow activists from around the world to discuss science-based solutions to this global issue.

The conference culminated with 186 countries submitting action plans on how to decrease and eliminate practices that have been found to cause climate change and to enact policies that will keep global temperatures from rising more than two degrees Celsius. Victoria was hoping for a goal of keeping the global temperature from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius, which would provide small island nations, such as The Maldives, with a fighting chance of not only maintaining their shore line but also avoiding being wiped off the map by rising ocean levels.

After two weeks filled with speeches, marches and meetings,  Victoria says that what she will remember most from her trip are the many people she met who, like her, are motivated to work towards a solution in reversing or curtailing the harmful emission of greenhouse gas and climate change. Victoria is also excited to bring her experiences to Notre Dame through the founding of the Environment Club, which will bring awareness of climate issues and promote action on the Notre Dame Campus. This spring, as she begins her college search, Victoria will be looking for a school where she can continue to develop as an activist through the study of International Relations.

Pre-Thanksgiving Field Trips
The day before Thanksgiving has become a day of exploration for our students, faculty and staff.  Teachers set aside lesson plans and students put away there books to travel throughout Manhattan to use the city as their classroom for the day.  Here is a look at some of the locations that Notre Dame visited:

Juniors enjoyed a visit to Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island and took in the beautiful views of midtown Manhattan.

Tenth  graders celebrated Chinese Culture at  The China Institute with an exercise  in writing Chinese script.
Students in the eleventh grade
traveled uptown to visit
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

Sr. Virginia and Ms. Shea-Klot joined a group of ninth graders for a visit to
The Rubin Museum of Art in our very own neighborhood.
