STEM BEST Event Showcases Importance of Partnerships

On June 17, educators, administrators, higher education leaders and representatives from business and industry gathered in Ankeny to collaborate and build upon innovative ways to infuse business and industry experiences into the classroom.  The event showcased accomplishments of the STEM Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers (BEST) awardees who have been successful in bring over 300 students and 140 business partners to their programs.  Sessions included how to form business/education partnerships, the recruitment of underrepresented students, building collaborations across districts, and more.  Of the more than 140 attendees, 47% were from K-12 education, 23% from business and industry, 20% from higher education, and  10% from non-profits.

Opening remarks from Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and Des Moines Area Community College President Rob Denson encouraged attendees to be the ambassadors for mutually beneficial partnerships.  According to Rob Denson, "the bus is packed and we have the right people in the seats."  A key takeaway from the event was the opportunity to build a relevant education for young Iowans and to show them that even though they may leave for college, there are plenty of opportunities for them when they return.

On July 6, a second round of funding for STEM Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers (BEST) or STEM Redesigned Learning Environments (RLE) will open.  We're excited to add more partners to strong list in southeast Iowa.  To learn more about the STEM BEST programs, visit here.  To learn more about the STEM RLE programs, visit here.
Passing the Torch at Workplace Learning Connection

The month of June is a time of big change for Workplace Learning Connection (WLC), the premier intermediary in the state. WLC Director Mary Lou Erlacher is retiring at the end of the month after serving since 1998 and Laurie Worden has been promoted to Associate Director.

Mary Lou Erlacher, retiring WLC Director

After 17 years as the Director of WLC, Mary Lou Erlacher cites her staff as what she is most proud of, explaining how there is "great creativity, flexibility, and dedication in this team." Laurie Worden echoed this sentiment, saying that their team is "passionate about the work."

Their work has continued to evolve and grow over the years, involving generous employment partners and hands-on experiences for students throughout our region. For instance, the WLC Team provided more than 26,000 K-12 career experiences during the 2014-2015 school year! Worden described their impact on students as making them "better prepared and better informed."

The team at WLC is excited for new projects in development, includi n g t he move of their Iowa City staff into the Kirkwood Regional Cente r at the University of Iowa. The growths of partnerships like the one with the University of Iowa will continue to serve WLC well, allowing them to build even more opportunities for students.

Workplace Learning Connection, with Mary Lou Erlacher at its helm, has truly benefitted the state of Iowa over the past 17 years, and the organization will certainly miss her expertise and leadership. Moreover, Erlacher describes her experiences as extremely positive. As WLC's Laurie Worden described, "there is not a day that goes by that we don't tangibly feel the impact of our work."

Externships Give Teachers Real World Experience

Externship Orientation at the State Hygienic Laboratory on June 10

The fifth summer of Real World Teacher Externships began this month, with placements in the southeast region at the State Hygienic Laboratory, MA Ford, Monsanto, HNI, American Profol, Siemens, Axalta Coating Systems, Mairet's Garden Center, and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

This year, teachers Krystle Stehno and Gordon Hackett have been placed at the State Hygienic Laboratory. Stehno is a teacher at Williamsburg Jr/Sr High School and is working in the quality assurance and disease control departments this summer to enhance her mathematics curriculum. Hackett, a teacher in Fairfield, will be using his externship to study various laboratories; one of these will be the microbiology and virology department, where he will focus his study on the avian bird flu and its impact on agriculture. We look forward to sharing more teacher externship experiences later this summer and fall.

Teacher externships aim to create partnerships between businesses and schools and demonstrate real-world applications of STEM content to secondary teachers. Externships are full-time temporary positions that last for six weeks during the summer. For more information on Real World Teacher Externships, visit iowastem.gov/externships.

South Slope Cooperative Communications Leader in STEM

On Monday, June 22nd SE Region STEM Manager Kristine Bullock and Dave Jacoby paid a business visit to one of the premier communications companies in the state of Iowa, South Slope Cooperative Communications.

South Slope covers the following communities: Amana, Ely, Fairfax, Newhall, North Liberty, Norway, Oxford, Solon, Shueyville, Swisher, Tiffin, Watkins, Walford, West and South Cedar Rapids, and parts of Coralville. CEO Justyn Miller and HR manager Dan Swick met with us to update the status of broadband and the future of communications, especially in relation to STEM and the Governor's STEM Council Initiatives. As a business already participating in internships for college students, Justyn is also interested in teacher externships, STEM Festivals and scale-up programming in local school districts.

South Slope has a keen interest in the use of drones for communications and agribusiness. Currently they are experimenting with two prototypes and have also initiated development of the uses for 3-D printers. As a popular employer in the community, South Slope receives numerous employment inquiries. In the world of technology, the business requires knowledge of CISCO, Microsoft, and Network+. They also are interested in workers with strong "soft" skills to create positive teamwork.
A future partnership with the SE Region STEM Hub and South Slope's continuing investment in the community and STEM will help define broadband needs for schools and local businesses. South Slope grant and scholarship opportunities can be found here
