Pint Size Science Introduces STEM to Preschoolers

The Pint Size Science program is just one of Iowa's Scale-Up programs that has seen great success this year! Pint Size Science incoprorates STEM topics to students ages 3 to 5 through the emphasis on earth, life, physical, and space sciences.

Christina Zaruba teaches at Springville Preschool, one of the Scale-Up awardees that uses the program with their 4 year-old and Junior Kindergarten students. Zaruba explained how the Science
Sprouts unit included many of the class' favorite experiments and "used all fields of learning" by teaching concepts in reading, writing, and mathematics.

"Before Pint Size Science, I found it very challenging to incorporate science into preschool learning," Zaruba said, explaining how this program allowed her to teach science by using hands-on learning experiences. Zaruba described the learning that took place with Pint Size Science as "amazing," showing how her young students were majorly impacted by this program.
Guest Column: Iowa STEM- Better Together

Collaboration may be one of the most important tools we have when designing and engaging in STEM activities throughout the state of Iowa. Over the past year and a half I have had the benefit of collaborating with STEM professionals across the state. These collaborations have resulted in making connections across STEM disciplines that have been a dream come true as a student, educator, and teacher-educator. This month there are many ways to reach out to other STEM champions both across the state of Iowa and around the Midwest. I challenge you to take part in one of these events. . .who knows?!? Maybe I'll see you there!

Kate Degner St. Ambrose University Science Professor

In addition to developing partnerships for K-12 STEM events, St. Ambrose University is excited to begin offering the necessary coursework for K - 12 teachers to earn their STEM endorsement in the state of Iowa. Starting this fall, the coursework will span 1 year for the K-5 or 5-8 endorsement and 2 years for the K-12 STEM Specialist Endorsement.

All courses will be offered asynchronously online and all courses will be offered for graduate credit. Information about the endorsement can be found here: https://stemedsau.wordpress.com or by emailing me at [email protected].

Southeast 2015-2016 Scale-Up Awardees Announced

On April 15, the Southeast Regional STEM Hub announced the STEM scale-up awardees for 2015-2016.  Through a rigorous review process, the STEM Council selected 14 high-quality STEM programs to scale up across Iowa's schools, after-school programs and other settings for grades pre-K through 12. These programs range from building robots and wind turbines to virtual reality and STEM career awareness, demonstrating an appeal to diverse youth, success in improving academic performance, evidence of integrating STEM concepts, development of school-business-community partnerships and sustainability beyond STEM Council financial support.

In the  southeast region alone, almost 23,000 students will participate in 2015-2016 programming as compared to just over 10,000 students during 2014-2015.  "In the fourth year of STEM Scale-Up, the STEM Council has partnered with nearly every school district in our state, which shows the amazing growth and outreach STEM has had in the last three years," said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, cochair of the STEM Council.

Results from the 2013-2014 Iowa STEM evaluation report show more than 90 percent of students who participated in a STEM Scale-Up program reported higher interest in at least one STEM subject or career. Nearly 75 percent of participating teachers report greater skill and confidence in teaching STEM and continue their program after the STEM Council's financial support ends. For a complete list of awardees by school district, please visit www.iowastem.gov/2015-16ScaleUpAwardees
