St. Mark's in the Community
Bike the Ridge is just around the corner on Sept. 27 and we really need your support! Donations of 8 oz. water bottles, juice boxes, and granola bars are still needed and can be brought to the church between 9 and 3:30 on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday OR on Sunday mornings. Please consider how you can help St. Mark's be hospitable to our community. If you would like to volunteer for a shift, click here. While you are bringing your donations for Bike the Ridge, keep in mind that this Sunday, Sept 20th, is also the 3rd Sunday of the month, which means it is time to collect nonperishable food items that will be donated to Hemenway United Methodist. The red shopping cart will be at the back of the sanctuary for you to deposit these items!

The CROP Hunger Walk is quickly approaching! This year it will be held on Sunday, October 18. The CROP walk raises awareness and funds to fight hunger locally as well as internationally. 25% of the total money raised will stay right here in Evanston to support 5 local organizations who are fighting hunger. Interfaith Action, who runs the Hospitality Center from our building, is one of those recipients! This fundraiser is something all ages can be involved in. There are many ways you can plug in- you can sign up to walk, sponsor a walker, volunteer at the Rest Area, or donate snacks. To walk with the St. Mark's team or to support the team financially, please   click here.

I f you have any questions, contact Anna Holladay, Community Engagement Director, [email protected] .
Worship & Formation
Lifelong Christian faith formation is important for lifelong growth in the knowledge, service and love of God as followers of Christ.  Regardless of where you are on your spiritual journey, no matter what season of life you are in, you are invited to enter into a prayerful life of continuous learning. Worship is the primary way in which we are formed in community. But what follows is information about our worship and other opportunities for enriching your journey in faith.

On Thursday, September 10th, all teens and adults are invited to join St. Mark's choir as we launch a new year of music. Rehearsals take place every Thursday evening from 7:30-9:00 in the Choir Room, and Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:15. Please contact David Plank if you have any questions or would like more information: [email protected] or (402) 650-9266. We hope you'll find singing with the choir welcoming, fun, and rewarding.
Meeting of the Choir Guild
The Choir Guild will meet this Sunday, September 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Library.  All members of the choir - new and returning - are encouraged to attend.  In addition to elect new officers, there will be an update from the organ committee and discussions about fundraising activities for the program year.  Lunch will be potluck (a sign-up form is in the choir room).  For more information or questions, please contact Guild President, Chris Schultze at [email protected].
The Ringing Begins Again!
We're welcoming new handbell ringers to St. Mark's! We will begin this season's rehearsals on September 20th. Our regular rehearsals are after church from noon-12:30pm in the balcony in the sanctuary. Please contact our Associate for Music Ministries, David Plank ([email protected]) if you would like to join or have any questions. St. Mark's handbell choir is intergenerational, so anyone interested over the age of five is welcome!
Sunday School Good News!
This Sunday, St. Mark's launches its 3rd year with the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum - the students and the teachers seem to enjoy it and Pastor Debra loves it because it follows the Sunday readings in worship ensuring a tie-in between what we are studying and what we are praying.  We are delighted that all of last year's teachers and a few new teachers are on board for the new year!  We are also delighted that there are 44 children and young people at St. Mark's from infants through age 17.     Thank you to   Patty Acha, Liz McElhatton, Tyler Maegawa-Goeser, Beth Johnson, Milner Seifert, Anne Heinz, Kendra Johnson, Shannon Najem, Debbie Nee, Nasim Alexander, Dorothy Szczpaniak, Rima Lockwood, Robin Tucker, Luke Urbanowski, Lori Goede, John Lucadamo, Chad Goeser, Deane Johnson, and Ellie Bergman for your commitment to St. Mark's young people.  If you would like to assist one Sunday per month, please contact Pastor Debra at [email protected] or 847-732-9564.
Bike the Ridge and Blessing of the Bicycles on September 27
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, Ridge Avenue will be closed from Howard Street to Church Street. Please give yourself extra time to get to church, navigate closed intersections and find parking.  Sadly there will be no access to the handicap-accessible parking in our circle drive due to the road closures. However, in the past the City of Evanston, has allowed St. Mark's parishioners to park along either side of Grove in the block just south of Ridge Avenue. Please leave those spaces for those who may have difficulty walking longer distances to church.  Better yet, Ride your Bike to Church - we will once again offer valet bike parking during services.  In addition at 9 a.m. and again at noon there will be a blessing of the bicycles at the front of the church.
Service of Commissioning for The Rev. Anna Holladay, St. Mark's Community Engagement Director and the other Julian Interns will be held this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at St. Andrew's Chapel and St. James Commons, 65 East Huron Street, Chicago.  There will be a reception immediately following.  If you would like to attend, you can RSVP to Whitney Michel at [email protected] or 312-751-6721
The Big Class: A Christian Response to Gun Violence
The grief around senseless killings involving firearms has put a pall over our nation, and many concerned Christians wonder what we can do.  St. Mark's will be taking place in a free online class called "A Christian Response to Gun Violence." The course is taught by Episcopal bishops Eugene Sutton (Maryland) and Ian Douglas (Connecticut) who are co-founders of Bishops United Against Gun Violence.  On Sunday, October 4 we will participate in the online class and on Sunday October 11 we will reconvene for conversation.  Both classes will take place from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. in Bethlehem Chapel.  If you cannot join us for both sessions, please plan to participate instead on Monday evening, October 26 from 7 - 9 p.m.
Forgiveness, Is It the Hardest Choice?
Science now tells us what has seemed intuitive all along, holding on to anger, hurt or hatefulness is not good for our well-being. This 4-week class strives to help us to confront places in our lives where we need to forgive others or ask forgiveness when we have been the one who has created th e hurt. It examines the healing power that comes when forgiveness is realized.  The curriculum is provided by The Living Compass and the class will be led by one or more of St. Mark's  Congregational Wellness Advocates.
We will hold the class on Sunday mornings from 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. in Bethlehem Chapel on Sundays, October 18, November 1, November 8, and November 15. Note: there will be no class on October 25.

Social Justice & Outreach Opportunities

St. Mark's continues its commitment to our community through its many social justice and outreach activities. Following are ways in which you can get involved with the St. Mark's community in helping to create a better world.

African Team Ministries Gift Sale
This Sunday and next, September 20 and 27 during Coffee Hour, St. Mark's will offer the unique gifts and jewelry of African Team Ministries for sale in the Parlor during coffee hour.  African Team Ministries is a Christian ministry working as an intermediary between African and American churches. With help from Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Anglican denominations, they provide funding for orphan and refugee relief missions and evangelism in East Africa. The support they receive through the sale of gifts is sent directly to our partnering Bishops to provide school fees, tuition, books, uniforms and irrigation kits for aid during the current drought.
Lunch Packing Volunteers Needed
Come spend a Tuesday evening packing sandwiches for our neighbors in need. Click here to sign up! We will pack lunches on Tuesday nights at St. Mark's from 6:00-7:00 PM.

We still need volunteers to serve lunch on Wednesdays. Volunteers to serve Wednesday lunch are asked to arrive by 10:45 a.m. and stay until 1:00 p.m.  To sign up to serve, click here!

Contact Anna Holladay, Community Engagement Director at [email protected] if you need to cancel or if you have questions.
2015 Fall Gathering
Lisa Todd, Community Relations Manager at Connections for the Homeless will challenge assumptions about poverty and homelessness at Interfaith Action of Evanston's Fall Gathering on Monday, Oct. 12 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2120 Lincoln Street, Evanston. St. Mark's is a member congregation of Interfaith Action and everyone is welcome to attend this gathering.
Other Announcements
Social Media and St. Mark's

If you have your mobile device it would be good if you put it on silent when in worship. But if anything in Sunday's service - a prayer, reading, hymn or the sermon-moves you, please feel free to tweet it or post it to Facebook #StMarkEvanston. While you're at it, "check-in" with us on Foursquare!

St. Mark's website has up-to-date information on all that's new at St. Mark's - including a current calendar of events - check it out at http://www.stmarksevanston.org. Also, we are on Facebook and Twitter! Find us at http://www.facebook.com/StMarkEvanston  and follow us @StMarkEvanston.

In The Community

God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Loving finds all of its meaning in relationship. The following are opportunities to be in relationship with one another and with the community of Evanston.

Men's Book Club at Second Baptist
A Men's Book Club will begin at Second Baptist Church, 1717 Benson Street, Evanston beginning Wednesday, October 7th.  The book club will meet from 6:15 AM to 7 AM each week in the Fellowship Hall.  The early hour selected was to ensure that there would be no conflict with schedules.  We will be finished at 7 AM.  Parking fees do not begin in downtown Evanston until 9 AM.  The first book is Between the World and Me by Pulitzer prize winning journalist, Ta-Nehisi Coates.  Coffee will be provided.  The book club is open to men of all ages, races, cultures and ethnicities.  For further information please direct your calls to our church office, 847.869.6955.  - Dr. Michael Nabors, Senior Pastor
InterPlay for Adults
The Chicago InterPlay community offers community classes at St. Mark's the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 7:30-9:00 pm, with doors open at 7:15 pm for registration and meeting other participants. The cost to attend the classes is $5 per class. InterPlay is an easy to learn creative process that invites participants to express themselves through storytelling, movement and vocalization. InterPlayers across the world are celebrating its 25th birthday this year. To learn more about InterPlay, visit
http://www.meetup.com/InterPlayChicago/ and http://www.interplay.org/ .  You can also email event leader Jeff Breting at [email protected]. Upcoming Date: September 22
Evanston English Country Dance Group
This group meets every other Wednesday in Cunningham Hall. All dances are taught and prompted. We learn English Country dances devised from pre-1650 to the present. Jane Austin would recognize much of the dancing we do. Once a month, we have live music performed by Putting on Aires; the other Wednesdays, the music is from an extensive CD collection. You are welcome to come with or without a partner. Wear comfortable shoes (the type you would use to walk a mile) and casual clothing. We ask for a $5 ($3 for students) admittance fee to cover the rent and to buy music for the band. For further information, contact Tom Senior 847-606-8704, [email protected]. Upcoming Date: September 23

Evanston Creative Writing Meetup

If you like to write and want a supportive environment in which to write, join us! Each week, a member volunteers to provide writing prompts to spark our creativity. It can be a first line, an object, a picture, a situation. For about 10-15 minutes we write and if we feel like sharing we read our creation aloud. This is not a critique group - only positive feedback is encouraged. We usually fit in 3-4 prompts in an evening. Member ages range from young adults to octagenarians. You do not have to be a serious or professional writer to participate. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month in the Old Library at St. Mark's or Panera.  For more information go to http://www.meetup.com/Evanston-Creative-Writing-Group/
