When used appropriately, essential oils are a safe healing tool for many symptoms of dis-ease. For those who suffer from Parkinson's there is hope for symptom relief as well.
Essential oils have been studied extensively for their effectiveness and they are easy to use. Essential oils can provide emotional and mental support, improve disturbed sleep patterns, boost stamina and energy and assist movement in Parkinson's patients.

Hope for Physical Symptom Relief
Parkinson's Disease is a neurological condition that's marked by a decline in the brain cells that produce dopamine.  There are many approaches to reversing the cause of Parkinson's and I really appreciate the way my colleague Robert addresses these topics in his blog and book Road to Recovery From Parkinson's Disease.

Robert's mother died from complications of Parkinson's and he has devoted the last 10 years to learning various natural modalities to reverse it and share the news. You can learn more at his website.

There are a host of symptoms that get lumped into the broad category of Parkinson's but the most common ones are:
  • stiffness in arms and legs
  • tremors in the arms, legs, hands, jaw and face
  • difficulty and/or slowness in voluntary muscle movement
  • impaired balance and coordination
In 1992 authors Len & Shirley Price oversaw a study called the the Parkinson's Disease Project.  As aromatherapists themselves, they wanted to know if essential oils could help improve movement in Parkinson's patients. You can read about it here.

Patients who received an essential oil lotion (blend) for daily use plus regular aromatherapy massage showed relief from these symptoms: tremors, stiffness, muscular pain, insomnia, constipation, anxiety, depression, and weak limbs. Those who received essential oils for the bath plus an essential oil blend for daily application to the skin experienced similar symptom relief. Those who used a daily lotion with essential oils but only plain vegetable oil in regular massage did not find lasting effects in symptom relief while the first two groups did.  The essential oils that were used included Marjoram, Clary Sage and Lavender. Ask me to make you a blend with these oils!
Essential Oils for Mood & Perception

Essential Oils offer a variety of therapeutic actions and delicious aromas to alleviate Parkinson symptoms. Here are some examples of how they affect mood:

Bergamot - uplifting, heals bitterness & brooding; calming; relieves anxiety

Frankincense - improves attitude, uplifting; increases spiritual awareness

Cedarwood grounding, calming

Valor* - grounding, energy balancing; instills courage, confidence & self-esteem

Marjoram calming to nerves, antispasmodic, general relaxant

Orange and Tangerine - calming, relaxing

Roman chamomile - calming, relaxing, antispasmodic, relieves restlessness & anxiety; minimizes irritability and nervousness; stabilizes emotions

Ylang Ylang reduces anxiety & depression, enhances spiritual attunement, combats anger, filters out negative energy; restores confidence and peace

Lavender emotionally balancing, calming & relaxing

Peace & Calming* - promotes relaxation and a deep sense of peace and emotional well-being

Use just 8-10 drops of essential oil for a mood enhancing blend you can use daily. Any of these essential oils could be added to an ounce of lotion or jojoba. I would suggest you try no more than two from the list in combination.

There is a great deal of research on Rosemary essential oil for boosting brain power making it a great addition to a daily regimen. The chemotype (ct.) of Rosemary cineole should not be confused with Rosemary ct. camphor or ct. verbenone. Rather, the chemical profile containing at least 40% of 1,8 cineole is quite different in how it affects cognitive performance. Not only does Rosemary's smell open the senses but it is easy to enjoy. Try a couple of drops on your shower floor in the morning to inhale the aroma. It's a great start to your day. I also love to make blends for bath gel with Rosemary & Juniper essential oils.
