MRI Scanner at GWIC
Last Week in July is MRI Safety Month

MRI Safety Week is the last week in July! We are ever vigilant about MRI safety at Greater Waterbury Imaging Center and we are always working to increase awareness and provide relevant information about MRI safety for our staff and patients. The last week in July was chosen for MRI Safety week because it was that week in 2001 when tragically a child died during the MRI procedure when an oxygen tank was brought into the MRI suite.

At Greater Waterbury Imaging Center, we are constantly updating our MRI safety program to address new safety issues as we learn about them such as clothing trends which include metal fibers. Please read about MRI safety at GWIC and how to prepare for your MRI exam.  We also have this MRI safety video for you to watch:

MRI Safety Considerations Every Day

As part of our focus this July on MRI Safety in our imaging suites, we want to remind everyone that all persons who need to enter the MRI area are required to be thoroughly screened and must complete and sign a screening questionnaire prior to entering the MRI area.  Here are some examples of what we screen for before entering the MR imaging suite::
  • Pacemakers
  • Implantable cardioverter device "ICD"
  • Pacing wires
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Neurostimulator
  • Mechanical pumps
  • Other surgical implants
  • Metallic foreign bodies
  • Shrapnel
  • Bullets
  • Pregnancy
  • Clothing with metallic design

MRI Lumbar Spine Case Study
MRI Lumbar Spine Case Study

Our case study of the month is an MRI scan of the lumbar spine.  The patient is a male with history of lumbar radiculitis.  The MRI Lumbar Spine Case Study procedure included axial and sagittal images of the lumbar spine and they were obtained on our 1.5 Tesla MRI machine and were compared to a previous scan in 2013.

At L3-4, there is a moderately large inferiorly extruded disc herniation as well as a new small left lateral disc herniation at this same level, as discussed above. There is also multilevel degenerative disease with bulges and protrusions, similar to the previous examination, as discussed above from L1 through S1.  A small protrusion at T11-12 is also noted.

ICD-10 October 1, 2015!

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) is a revision of the ICD-9-CM system which physicians and other providers currently use to code all diagnoses, symptoms, and procedures recorded in hospitals and physician practices.

We'll be co-hosting an event, along with Waterbury Hospital and Greater Waterbury Health Network, on July 30th for all our referring physicians on this important transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10. The ICD-9 code sets used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures will be replaced by ICD-10 code sets on October 1, 2015. This will be a networking event planned to discuss and share information, training and ideas regarding the implementation of ICD-10.  Any questions about the event please contact Sue Castelli at 203-573-7103.

Visit our website for resources for physicians with the latest information on the ICD-10 implementation.
