We hope you had a great year! Our drop in office hours (Mondays 1 pm - 4 pm and Wednesdays - 10 am - 1 pm) will remain through the end of this week. The CASC office will be open during the spring and summer semesters, so feel welcome to stop by and visit.

We are increasing our social media presence - help us get to 500 likes by clicking here. We are currently at 442 likes, we're almost there!

CASC Survey

All CASC students are invited to participate in a survey about the CASC minor. This survey will help us to understand your experiences in the minor and your social justice learning. This survey is completely voluntary, and your responses will be recorded anonymously. You will need to log in to your google account to access the survey, but your username will not be recorded. Your responses will be used for research by the CASC team. Be in touch with CASC director Katie Richards-Schuster with any questions.

Registration for SW 305 

Sections 1 and 2 of SW 305 are currently closed. Section 3, Friday mornings from 9 am  - 12 pm, is open. Complete one of these forms to petition for Section 3, or to be placed on the wait list for Sections 1 or 2.  If you have any questions, contact Alice


Registration for SW Courses
CASC students may petition to take social work courses. Once you receive permission to enroll, you can find the courses on Wolverine Access by searching under "Schools and Colleges" and then "Social Work." Register for a social work course.

SW 400
This fall course is an undergraduate elective designed to familiarize students with the profession of social work and the MSW program. The particular social problems selected for discussion is dependent on the faculty and student interest. There will be a brief overview of the social context for the kinds of roles, interventions, and fields of service that the profession generally operates from, before exploring in depth the professions response to each selected social problem. Themes include multicultural sensitivity to various diversity dimensions, empowerment, prevention, and value based intervention.  Register for this course by searching under Schools and Colleges, then Social Work, on Wolverine Access.  SW 400 is an elective for the context cluster of the CASC minor.

AAS 358/ANTHRCUL 356
Filming the Future of Detroit is a rare opportunity to engage Detroit simultaneously from theoretical and practical perspectives, from the perspectives of music history, social history, architectural history, cultural anthropology, literature, and film. Students in this course will read, write, and learn how to make films with the help of an award winning filmmaker from Berlin. Students will approach Detroit from the perspectives of race, gender, sexuality, democracy, urbanization, suburbanization, industrialization, de-industrialization, emergency management, and the future. Detroit's place in the world, and the extent to how it is representative or not of American and other urban futures will be examined. Students will also work with a group of young people who live in and are growing up in Detroit and learn how to see Detroit from their perspectives and collectively produce films about it. The course will end in public screenings in Ann Arbor and Detroit.

IGR Capstone Course
Consider enrolling in the IGR Capstone course: Social Justice in the Real World (UC/SOC 471, PSYCH 411). This course is offered to seniors only and will focus on social justice and social change in the United States and on individual participants' own values, skills, and future plans. This course explores alternative meanings of social justice, theories and strategies of social change, roles of change agents in traditional career environments, costs and benefits of careers of social activism, discussions with local social justice advocates and organizational representatives, and practice in multicultural teamwork and coalition building. This course meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 - 11:30AM. Registration is by permission of instructor only.

YVC Summer Camp Program
The Youth Volunteer Corps Expanding Horizons Summer Camp Program is seeking CASC students for an exciting opportunity to speak to students on the importance of social responsibility . Their day camp is June 15 - August 27, Monday through Thursday, 9AM - 3PM. They are seeking a keynote speaker on Tuesdays 10AM - 12PM and/or Thursdays 11AM - 12PM. If anyone is interested in sharing the importance of social responsibility as being a collaborative community member with youth ages 11 - 17, contact CASC student Gretchen Mason.

Magnify
This spring, the Center for Positive Organizations is launching a brand new program called Magnify. Magnify is an immersive academic and action-learning experience that introduces students to the field of Positive Organizational Scholarship, a field within management science that focuses on enabling people to thrive in the workplace. Earn up to 6 Ross credits and work with partner organizations such as Cascade Engineering, DTE Energy, Henry Ford Health System, Menlo Innovations, or Neutral Zone. Union Research Summer School
The AFL-CIO and Cornell University are sponsoring a Strategic Corporate Research Summer School June 14-19 in Ithaca, New York. The course (credit or non-credit) is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as others interested in working as union researches and campaigners. Partial scholarships are available based on need if taking the course for credit. Learn more and apply before May 1.

Environment Michigan
Environment Michigan is hiring for several campaign jobs this summer. They have paid full-time canvassing jobs and unpaid part-time internships available. They are seeking individuals interested in spending their summer creating change by helping protect Michigan's waterways and beaches. Individuals will help with making sure loopholes in the Clean Water Act are addressed to secure that water will be kept clean in Michigan!
