MSW/PhD Info Session for CASC Students

Interested in learning about pursuing a masters or PhD in social work? Join representatives from the School of Social Work's office of admissions to learn more about the program and the application process. Please note, this event is only open to declared CASC minors.

Backpacking and Advising Pizza Party

Not sure what classes to register for? Join us for our an evening of backpacking, advising, and of course, pizza! This event is a great chance for CASC students to check out the Fall 2015 course guide, learn the inside scoop on CASC courses from the Student Advisory Board, and check in with the advising staff about courses. It is also a great time to socialize with other CASC students while enjoying free food!

CASC Senior Video

Calling all CASC seniors! The seniors on the CASC Student Advisory Board are coordinating a video to show at the spring CASC graduation ceremony! Sign-up for a quick 15 minute filming session to share your CASC experience. We are also soliciting photos of CASC seniors in action. You can submit those to [email protected]. This is a great opportunity for seniors who want to express themselves in a creative way and showcase their experiences at graduation!  Please submit any photos by March 31, 2015 at midnight .

CASC Senior Brunch

Are you interested in networking with peers to hear about their future plans? Do you enjoy playing games or taking pictures in a "photo booth"? Anyone like  waffles?!?! The  brunch will include delicious food, artistic performances, a photo booth, and a great opportunity to network with your peers based on areas of interest and geographic moves.

DECLARE Retreat

CASC is excited for the return of the DECLARE retreat this semester! DECLARE is a day and half retreat that will allow you to dive deeply into thinking about your identities, your social justice work, and how you can work to implement change. The retreat is open to all declared CASC minors, and students who have met with a CASC advisor and plan to declare the minor. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until spots are filled. Please complete the DECLARE application form here.

The CASC course guides are now live for the spring , summer , and fall 2015 semesters! More classes are coming soon, so stay tuned for finalized course guides at our upcoming backpacking and advising pizza party!

Registration for SW 305 and SW 401
Registration for SW 305

To register for SW 305 for Fall 2015 you MUST complete one of these forms indicating your preferred section of SW 305. Completing this form is the only way to receive an override into SW 305 for the Fall 2015 term. Please make sure you complete the form for your preferred section. Permissions will be given to current CASC students in order of class standing. Permissions will not be issued until the beginning of April. If you have any questions, contact Alice. You will be notified by April 21st if you are granted permission into the course. Thank you for your patience as the CASC office processes the requests.
 

Registration for SW 401
SW 401 is the CASC Capstone course. It is only open to CASC seniors. You should take SW 305 prior to taking SW 401. There are two options for SW 401 in the fall term, listed below:
Sec 1: Tuesdays 5:00-8:00 pm. Dates: October 6 - November 3 
Sec 2: Tuesdays 5:00-8:00 pm. Dates: November 10 - December 8 
To register for SW 401, you must complete one of these forms. Please make sure you complete the form for your preferred section. If you have any questions, contact Alice.


IGR Courses
Intergroup dialogues are three-credit courses carefully structured to explore social group identity, conflict, community, and social justice. Trained student facilitators and student participants explore similarities and differences among and across groups and strive toward building a multicultural and democratic community.These courses count towards the Diversity cluster for CASC.  Learn more about enrolling in an IGR course.

PCAP Art Exhibit 

The Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) is hosting its 20th annual "Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners."  There are numerous events to attend while the exhibit is open. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10AM - 7PM, and Sunday-Monday, 12 - 6PM.

Seeking a major or minor? Come out to the Major/Minor Expo Fair! The fair features many LSA departments and is a great opportunity to meet with department advisors and learn more about what major(s) or minor(s) may be right for you.

ASB Site Leader

Interested in leading a service-learning spring break trip next year? Join U-M Alternative Spring and become an Alternative Spring Break site leader. They are seeking individuals passionate about community issues, committed to student involvement, and leaders in providing positive community experiences for others. Applications are due by March 26 at 5PM.
 
 

Vagina Monologues

Students for Choice is presenting their third annual production of, "The Vagina Monologues," a performance of Eve Ensler's work that has become famous for its candid, honest, and hilarious representations of vaginas and the people who have them. Tickets will be on sale March 23 - 26 from 10AM - 4PM in Mason Hall. Tickets are $5 pre-sale and $10 at the door, cash only. All proceeds will go to support SafeHouse Center and the V-Day Campaign. rEVOLUTION Art Show

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC) is hosting their 10th annual art show, "rEVOLUTION: Making Art for Change." The themes of this show are gender, empowerment, sexism, and sexualized violence. A silent auction will take place and food and drink will be served.

Social Change Media Study

Communications doctoral student Dan Lane is conducting a study to explore the role of media (such as digital video) in shaping how socially engaged college students see themselves as changemakers. Please join us to share your experiences with social change media in a collaborative focus group environment. It will be a great opportunity to think more deeply about how you watch and share videos and learn from your colleagues about the role of media in social action. Food will be served! Join Sociologists of Color as they host, " What's Great About Graduate School?" This dinner is an opportunity for individuals considering grad school, but are unsure of how to begin the process, or individuals with questions about funding and academic expectations, to meet with current Sociology grad students. Diversity Monologues
LSA Honors will host the second event in the second annual Diversity Monologues series. The topic is gender and sexual orientation, creating a creative space for individuals to discuss experiences and ideas related to the identities that they hold in this respect. Flor Y Canto
Join the conversation revolving immigration by attending, " Flor Y Canto: The Untold Stories and Experiences of Immigration and Living Undocumented." This event promotes awareness around the negative stigma associated with immigration and non-citizenship/citizenship. By sharing stories and experiences of individuals, factual evidence and positive perspectives will shed light on the misinformation and myths surrounding this issue. If you or someone you know would like to tell your story/experience in a creative way such as singing, rapping, dancing, poetry, or art, please contact CASC student Wendy Cortes.

UMMA Student Late Night
Organized by U-M students, the sixth annual Student Late Night event at U-M Museum of Art will be a fun-filled, late night creative explosion. Activities include hands-on art, original performances, swinging sounds from WCBN DJs, a photo booth, free food, and more. Contact Lauren Harroun with any questions. RSVP via Facebook.

LSA Mentorship Program
Current LSA students with a summer internship have the opportunity to have a member of the LSA Dean's Young Alumni Council (DYAC) mentor them for the upcoming summer. Each student will be paired with a recent LSA graduate mentor for the summer, whether they are in Chicago, New York, DC, or Michigan. Complete this form by Friday, April 10 in order to receive an application to apply for the program. Contact CASC alum Monica Philipp with further questions or concerns.

Sticks, Stones and Words Campaign
CASC students Nahal Shakib, Jay Park, Simon Rivers, and Barbara-Rose Collins are leading the campaign, "Sticks, Stones and Words." This campaign seeks to promote inclusive language through the use of passive activism by reaching out to marginalized and oppressed communities. They will allow the self-empowerment of marginalized communities by promoting the stories of why the words we use matter through the use of photography and social media. They are seeking to interview and photograph U-M students for their website. Email the students for more information.

Rolling Admissions for SiD
Apply now to join SiD for fall 2015 ! SiD will expose you to an in-depth community-based internship and an Urban Studies curriculum including courses like 20th Century Detroit History, Creative Writing, and Environmental Justice Organizing. Enjoy Detroit in the fall with great weather for biking and walking, harvest season for urban farms, and public festivals. Final application deadline is March 30 at midnight.

Nourish International Chapter
Nourish International is an opportunity for students interested in implementing sustainable development projects and fighting extreme poverty. Each chapter decides on a business venture to be completed throughout the year and a sustainable project abroad during the summer. The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is a multidisciplinary online journal that publishes intellectual and reflective work on service learning and community-based research. It is open to students in the U.S. and across the globe. Read the latest volume and consider submitting your own written work!

Shaheen Scholarship

The 2015 Jack G. Shaheen Mass Communications Scholarship honors Arab-American students who excel in Media Studies. Juniors, seniors, and graduate students enrolled in the 2014-2015 academic year and majoring in journalism, radio, television, and/or film are eligible to apply. Problem Solvers Wanted
U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) works to decrease the number of problems in America by putting more solutions into action. They are seeking smart, talented graduating seniors who agree that America has more problems than we should tolerate, but understand that there are plenty of solutions to these problems that our nation should be putting into use. Apply for this fellowship by March 30.
 
College Advisor
Michigan College Advising Corps (MCAP) follows the tradition of the AmeriCorps and Teach for America programs. They recruit and train a diverse group of recent U-M graduates to work full-time as college advisors in under-served high schools throughout Michigan for one or two years following graduation. These advisors help to serve as a resource for first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students entering and completing higher education in the state of Michigan. Repair the World Fellowship
Repair the World Fellowship is an 11-month opportunity for young adults ages 21-26 to engage and challenge the Jewish community to address social justice issues through meaningful volunteering. Fellows will collaborate with peers to create thought provoking events and volunteer experiences. This fellowship takes place in Baltimore, Detroit, New York City, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, and will provide training, a living stipend, communal housing, and health insurance, among other perks. Jewish Organizing Fellowship
The Jewish Organizing Fellowship in Boston is a professional development opportunity for Jewish young adults between the ages of 21 and 30 who are dedicated to working for social change. Fellows work full-time for one year as paid organizers in Boston area organizations and receive training from the Jewish Organizing Institute and Network (JOIN). Learn more and apply before April 1.

Union Summer Internship
The AFL-CIO Union Summer internship program is an exciting opportunity for students to be a part of building a strong workers movement in the U.S. This nine week paid internship ($400 per week before taxes) introduces and connects students to the labor movement. Union organizing campaigns will be in St. Louis, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, New York City, and Jackson, MS. They are looking for energetic, passionate, and student activists who possess solid leadership and communication skills and want to spend the summer helping people build power in their workplaces by forming a union. Application deadline is April 3.

Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service
IPVS is an academic internship program held in Washington, DC for undergraduate students interested in volunteerism and careers in the nonprofit sector. The Institute combines hands on professional experience for 30 hours a week with a challenging academic experience worth between 3 and 9 credit hours from George Mason University. Scholarships are available. Application deadline is April 7
