CASC Senior Brunch

Save the date! Seniors on the CASC Student Advisory Board are hosting a senior brunch for all CASC seniors. Join us for one last hurrah! More information to follow in upcoming newsletters.

Senior Audits

CASC has moved to an online auditing system. You should complete your major degree audit before you complete your minor degree audit. Please complete this form to help us complete your minor audit release. If you would like to discuss your senior audit with an academic advisor, or if you have questions about this process, please email Joe at [email protected].

 

CASC Graduation Information for Seniors

We are very excited about CASC graduation! We have a large number of RSVPs and a limited space, so we are going to host graduation in two waves in the Lower Level of the School of Social Work on Friday, May 1. The Maize Group will have their ceremony from 9:15 - 9:45 AM with a 10 AM reception following. The Blue Group will have their ceremony from 10 - 10:30 AM with a reception following at 10:30 AM. Please complete this form to register for graduation. Please note that only the Maize Group is available at this time. If you do not intend to attend graduation, please indicate that on the form. You will receive a confirmation of your assigned group soon.

DECLARE Retreat

CASC is excited for the return of the DECLARE retreat this semester! DECLARE is a day and half retreat that will allow you to dive deeply into thinking about your identities, your social justice work, and how you can work to implement change. The retreat is open to all declared CASC minors, and students who have met with a CASC advisor and plan to declare the minor. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until spots are filled. Please complete the DECLARE application form here.

Detroit Week
Join the Detroit Partnership, The Black Student Union, The Black Volunteer Network, Semester in Detroit, and LSA Student Government for the debut of Detroit Week! Through their three events, they will be challenging common narratives around Detroit and humanizing experiences. Learn more information. RSVP by February 9 to reserve your spot for volunteering.

Summer Research Initiative
The University of Maryland is hosting an 8-week program on the College Park campus, "Summer Research Initiative to Increase Diversity." This is an opportunity for rising juniors and seniors to increase their interest in research careers in the social and behavioral sciences, develop research skills, and learn about doctoral training. Students will work with a faculty mentor and also attend lectures, workshops, and networking opportunities. The program has a special emphasis on population groups underrepresented in the social and behavioral sciences. Application deadline is February 10, 2015.

Sexpertise Conference
Sexpertise 2015 is a three day conference with events on sexuality and relationships within the U-M campus climate. This conference works to address questions regarding why it is important to talk about sex and sexuality, how an individual can communicate what they want, what sexual health research is happening, and how the media influences how individuals treat each other. All events are free and open to the public. Registration is recommended, but not required. Learn more about the events, full schedule of the conference, and registering for sessions.

Rose Sale Fundraiser for Ebola Victims
FreeHearts and Society of Women Engineers are partnering to sell bouquets of one dozen roses for charity. The proceeds will support Freedom Initiative, a nonprofit that supports freedom issues, and Liberia SWE Ebola Victims, a fund for students in Liberia affected by the Ebola outbreak. Purchase a bouquet of roses in pink or red for $25 pre-sale or $30 on designated pick-up days. Complete the order form. For more information, email the FreeHearts Executive Board.

Welfare Simulation
The Welfare Simulation is a copyrighted learning tool developed by the Reform Organization of Welfare. As part of the Learning from the Community workshop series, the Ginsberg Center presents, "Welfare Simulation: Life in the State of Poverty." Explore what it means to live in poverty by participating in a simulated month on welfare. Discover specific realistic challenges associated with feeding a family, paying bills, finding employment, and navigating many more challenges. Reflect on your insights and learn ways to take action, promote justice, and be an ally to those living in poverty. RSVP for this event.

Winkelman Memorial Lecture
The 2015 Leon and Josephine Winkelman Memorial Lecture, "Stages of the Soul; Opportunities in the Second Half of Life" provides a forum for the presentation of new and emerging knowledge from the social sciences and the helping professions in the field of gerontology. All are welcome to attend the keynote by Harry R. Moody, PhD, followed by a panel discussion and reception. Please RSVP for this event.

IMPACT Self-Defense Program
IMPACT was recommended by a collaborative group of U-M Students, faculty, and staff as a personal safety education program which is evidence-based, alert to the social context in which violence occurs, trauma-informed, and open to participants of all gender identities and physical abilities. IMPACT empowers students to use their own voice, power, and intuition to respond in situations of potential harm, including violence from known others. Learn more about IMPACT. Connect to Community Portal
The Ginsberg Center has built the Connect to Community portal for U-M students to learn more about opportunities to volunteer, intern, and work for nonprofit and other organizations serving communities around the world. This resource is accessible by signing into the system with your UM login information. Students can search for organizations and opportunities by issue area and availability and receive updates directly from organizations. Contact the Assistant Director for Outreach and Communications, Abby Fanelli for assistance with the portal.

Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a student organization for those dedicated to help support the mission of providing positive mentors for children in Washtenaw County. There is a need for more volunteers to act as mentors to children who need guidance, support, and care. Learn more about how you can get involved.

Funding for Student Organizations

CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for funding. CASC has a limited pool of money that CASC students are eligible to apply for. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. To apply for funding, students must submit a funding proposal that includes the following information: student org name, contact info, SOAS account number, event name, summary of event, date of event, complete budget. Email questions to [email protected].

Jobs and Internships
Summer Internship Information Session
The Center for European Studies and Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies have established two internship opportunities for U-M undergraduate students for summer 2015, one in Zagreb, Croatia and another in Pristina, Kosovo. Apply before February 20 to either of these programs. There will be an information session to learn more about funding opportunities for research, internships, and study in Europe and Eurasia.

City Year Position
City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors, and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities across the United States. Currently, AmeriCorps members are needed to work full-time in schools for 11 months providing individualized support to at-risk students. Learn more about this service opportunity. 12+ Fellows Initiative
12+ is a non-profit focused on increasing educational equity by building school cultures that inspire academic achievement and empower students to succeed in education beyond the twelfth grade. The 12+ Fellows Initiative is a one-year engagement that opens a channel for recent graduates to transform the culture of inner-city high schools. Learn more about the Fellows Initiative and apply. CEO Summer Job Opportunities
The Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) is in search of responsible, dedicated, and passionate students interested in engaging with youth through summer residential programs. U-M students will serve as Student Leaders who mentor, supervise, and advise youth ages 12-16. Student Leaders are needed for spring and summer outreach programs. Detroit Partnership
Detroit Partnership is a student non-profit organization that offers weekly service learning programs in Detroit. They are looking for a community coordinator for a new site that will help people navigate the new property exemption bill to be launched by the mayor in his upcoming city address. HealthCorps Coordinator
HealthCorps is a non profit founded to combat the childhood obesity crisis. A new position, HealthCorps Coordinator, is an opportunity to lead unique in-school and community programming designed to foster physical and mental fitness, particularly among high-need populations. Coordinators serve as peer-mentors who deliver a progressive curriculum in nutrition, exercise, and mental strength to students nationwide. Learn more and apply. Friends in Deed
Friends in Deed is seeking a part time Office Manager. The job is part-time, Monday and Wednesday, 8:30 AM - 4 PM. Duties and responsibilities include administration work, volunteer supervision, financial recordings, collaboration with executive director and staff, and other duties as assigned.
