MSW/PhD Info Session for CASC Students

Interested in learning about pursuing a masters or PhD in social work? Join representatives from the School of Social Work's office of admissions to learn more about the program and the application process. Please note, this event is only open to declared CASC minors.

CASC Senior Video

Calling all CASC seniors! The seniors on the CASC Student Advisory Board are coordinating a video to show at the spring CASC graduation ceremony! Sign-up for a quick 15 minute filming session to share your CASC experience. We are also soliciting photos of CASC seniors in action. You can submit those to [email protected]. This is a great opportunity for seniors who want to express themselves in a creative way and showcase their experiences at graduation!  Please submit any photos by March 31, 2015 at midnight .

Senior Audits

CASC has moved to an online auditing system. You should complete your major degree audit before you complete your minor degree audit. Please complete this form to help us complete your minor audit release. If you would like to discuss your senior audit with an academic advisor, or if you have questions about this process, please email Joe at [email protected].


DECLARE Retreat

CASC is excited for the return of the DECLARE retreat this semester! DECLARE is a day and half retreat that will allow you to dive deeply into thinking about your identities, your social justice work, and how you can work to implement change. The retreat is open to all declared CASC minors, and students who have met with a CASC advisor and plan to declare the minor. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until spots are filled. Please complete the DECLARE application form here.

The CASC course guides are now live for the spring, summer, and fall 2015 semesters! More classes are coming soon, so stay tuned for finalized course guides at our upcoming backpacking and advising pizza party!

Registration for SW 305 and SW 401
Registration for SW 305

To register for SW 305 for Fall 2015 you MUST complete one of these forms indicating your preferred section of SW 305. Completing this form is the only way to receive an override into SW 305 for the Fall 2015 term. Please make sure you complete the form for your preferred section. Permissions will be given to current CASC students in order of class standing. Permissions will not be issued until the beginning of April. If you have any questions, contact Alice. You will be notified by April 21st if you are granted permission into the course. Thank you for your patience as the CASC office processes the requests.
 

Registration for SW 401
SW 401 is the CASC Capstone course. It is only open to CASC seniors. You should take SW 305 prior to taking SW 401. There are two options for SW 401 in the fall term, listed below:
Sec 1: Tuesdays 5:00-8:00 pm. Dates: October 6 - November 3 
Sec 2: Tuesdays 5:00-8:00 pm. Dates: November 10 - December 8 
To register for SW 401, you must complete one of these forms. Please make sure you complete the form for your preferred section. If you have any questions, contact Alice.

Immigration Panel Event
The U-M Amnesty International chapter is hosting a panel on immigration policy. Professor Jesse Hoffnung-Garskof from the History department and Professor Ann Lin from the School of Public Policy will talk with students about the crisis during the summer with unaccompanied minors crossing the border in large numbers. They will explore historical precedents to discover how to integrate human rights into immigration policy. Pizza will be served.

What Do Social Movements Do?
Join graduate students in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures for the 20th Annual Charles F. Fraker Graduate Student Conference. Listen to keynote speakers, view an art exhibition with visual art from social movements and collectives, and participate in a workshop with keynote speakers. Register for the conference.

PHSAD Minority Health Conference
All are welcome to attend the 28th Annual Public Health Students of African Descent Minority Health Conference event, " Feeding the Problem: Food Access in Urban Neighborhoods." Speakers include Dr. Dorceta Taylor, Professor of Environmental Justice, who will give the keynote address, and panelists making a difference in the food justice movement. Lunch will be provided for all registrants. Please RSVP by March 11.

Leadership Intensive Short Course
This is a free, noncredit course where participants will gain an understanding of their own personal leadership styles, how these can best be used in the workplace, and how to understand different leadership styles and dealing with them effectively. The course will include lecture, role-playing, and personal reflection time. Students will create a personal leadership game plan and instructors will review and provide feedback on the game plans as a follow-up to the session. This course will be taught by Jane Miller, Career Coach and Food Industry Executive and Debbie Carosella, CEO of Madhava Natural Sweeteners.

Day in the D: Beyond Southwest
Join Semester in Detroit for "A Day in the D" in the Southwest neighborhood. SiD staff and alumni will introduce individuals to their community partners, the art scene, and delicious food. Free admission and lunch. Transportation will depart and return to CC Little. Reserve your spot before Thursday, March 12 at 12PM.

Social Change Media Study

Communications doctoral student Dan Lane is conducting a study to explore the role of media (such as digital video) in shaping how socially engaged college students see themselves as changemakers. Please join us to share your experiences with social change media in a collaborative focus group environment. It will be a great opportunity to think more deeply about how you watch and share videos and learn from your colleagues about the role of media in social action. Sessions will be held on the following dates at the School of Social Work.

Rolling Admissions for SiD
Apply now to join SiD for fall 2015 ! SiD will expose you to an in-depth community-based internship and an Urban Studies curriculum including courses like 20th Century Detroit History, Creative Writing, and Environmental Justice Organizing. Enjoy Detroit in the fall with great weather for biking and walking, harvest season for urban farms, and public festivals. Final application deadline is March 30 at midnight.

Nourish International Chapter
Nourish International is an opportunity for students interested in implementing sustainable development projects and fighting extreme poverty. Each chapter decides on a business venture to be completed throughout the year and a sustainable project abroad during the summer. For any student interested in beginning a chapter at U-M, applications are accepted on a rolling basis through March 31. Learn more about Nourish International and beginning a chapter.

Call for Submissions 
The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is a multidisciplinary online journal that publishes intellectual and reflective work on service learning and community-based research. It is open to students in the U.S. and across the globe. Read the latest volume and consider submitting your own written work!

Navigating a Complex World
The staff of Counseling and Psychological Services has created a web page section, " Navigating a Complex World," to acknowledge that while student life can be consuming due to academic demands, being a student is only one aspect of an individual's identity. This space is a tool for the university community to remain aware of national, global, and U-M campus events, especially those that might impact students' daily life, health, and wellness.

The Dawn Farm Education Series is a free annual series providing helpful, hopeful, and practical information for people in recovery, people interested in recovery, families and friends of people with an addition, professionals, students, and others. Funding for Student Organizations

CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for funding. CASC has a limited pool of money that CASC students are eligible to apply for. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. To apply for funding, students must submit a funding proposal that includes the following information: student org name, contact info, SOAS account number, event name, summary of event, date of event, complete budget. Email questions to [email protected].

Jobs and Internships
CSAS South Asia Fellowship
The Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS) is offering the Summer in South Asia Fellowship. Students will receive $3,000 to design their own research program, connect with an NGO or business in India, spend a minimum of four weeks in India this summer, submit a research report at the end of the summer, and attend a symposium in October presenting their research project. All U-M freshman, sophomores, and juniors who preferably have not spent extensive time in India are eligible to apply. Application deadline is March 11 at 5 PM. Students accepted into the fellowship will be notified March 15, 2015. Email Janelle Fosler for application information and details.

University Licensed Goods Internship
The internship goal is to map out the U-M licensed goods apparel supply chain and perform research and analysis into social responsibility issues for a segment of this supply chain. The intern would be responsible for mapping the supply chain to at least two or three levels down using various sources of data and supplementing it with surveys and interviews. You will work in collaboration with the U-M President's Advisory Committee on Labor Standards and Human Rights, the U-M Licensing office, the Collegiate Licensing Company, and the Sumerra company. All students not graduating in May are eligible to apply for this paid internship that covers travel and lodging in Portland, OR, in addition to a stipend. Email Nancy Vanderkuyl with any questions. Application deadline is March 13.

Summer Youth Dialogues
U-M undergraduate and graduate students are invited to become a U-M Social Justice Fellow by joining an educational team and facilitating the Summer Youth Dialogues (SYD) on race and ethnicity in the Metropolitan Detroit Program. SYD increases dialogue among high school youth in metro Detroit, the nation's most segregated metro area. Fellows will receive training and facilitate dialogues and community-building projects among young people of African, Asian, European, Latino/a, and Middle Eastern descent. Fellows will receive course credit and a $1,000 stipend. Learn more about the SYD program and apply. Applications are due by Friday, March 20 at 5PM.

Diplomat Fellowship Program
The Diplomat Fellowship provides fellows with a stipend of $4,000 over the course of the summer to create a social venture in Flint, MI. During the three month program, fellows will live in free apartment-style housing in downtown Flint and be immersed in the community. They will gain hands-on experience and access to a dedicated network of professionals who will help to develop critical business and communication skills, launch a career in civic minded business, nonprofit management, or social entrepreneurship, and build a network of contacts and colleagues in a range of sectors and industries.
