CASC Senior Video

Calling all CASC seniors! The seniors on the CASC Student Advisory Board are making a video to show at the spring CASC graduation ceremony! They are asking for portraits and/or action photos of seniors putting CASC into action. This is not mandatory, but an opportunity for seniors who want to express themselves in this creative way! Please submit any photos by March 31, 2015 at midnight.

 

CASC Senior Brunch

Save the date! Seniors on the CASC Student Advisory Board are hosting a senior brunch for all CASC seniors. Join us for one last hurrah! More information to follow in upcoming newsletters.

Senior Audits

CASC has moved to an online auditing system. You should complete your major degree audit before you complete your minor degree audit. Please complete this form to help us complete your minor audit release. If you would like to discuss your senior audit with an academic advisor, or if you have questions about this process, please email Joe at [email protected].


DECLARE Retreat

CASC is excited for the return of the DECLARE retreat this semester! DECLARE is a day and half retreat that will allow you to dive deeply into thinking about your identities, your social justice work, and how you can work to implement change. The retreat is open to all declared CASC minors, and students who have met with a CASC advisor and plan to declare the minor. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until spots are filled. Please complete the DECLARE application form here.

SSW Room Reservation Policies

CASC students are welcome to utilize two of the School of Social Work study rooms in the Lower Level. These rooms may be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Student organizations led by CASC minor students can reserve rooms in the SSW if they register their groups with the Center for Campus Involvement and the Office of Student Services. Registration with the OSS for the Winter term ends February 27, 2015. Review room reservation policies. Access the CASC student organization registration form. Please also include a copy of the organization's constitution and a list of members to complete the registration process. Contact the OSS with any questions.

Winkelman Memorial Lecture
The 2015 Leon and Josephine Winkelman Memorial Lecture, "Stages of the Soul; Opportunities in the Second Half of Life" provides a forum for the presentation of new and emerging knowledge from the social sciences and the helping professions in the field of gerontology. All are welcome to attend the keynote by Harry R. Moody, PhD, followed by a panel discussion and reception. Please RSVP for this event.

IMPACT Self-Defense Program
IMPACT was recommended by a collaborative group of U-M Students, faculty, and staff as a personal safety education program which is evidence-based, alert to the social context in which violence occurs, trauma-informed, and open to participants of all gender identities and physical abilities. IMPACT empowers students to use their own voice, power, and intuition to respond in situations of potential harm, including violence from known others. Learn more about IMPACT. rEVOLUTION Submissions
The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center is now accepting submissions for the tenth annual art show, "rEVOLUTION: Making Art for Change," an empowering art show in the beginning of April. Art of any medium is welcome, including, but not limited to painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, spoken word, and poetry. The themes for this show are gender, sexism, sexual violence, and empowerment. Email submissions by March 1, 2015.

Nourish International Chapter
Nourish International is an opportunity for students interested in implementing sustainable development projects and fighting extreme poverty. Each chapter decides on a business venture to be completed throughout the year and a sustainable project abroad during the summer. For any student interested in beginning a chapter at U-M, applications are accepted on a rolling basis through March 31. Learn more about Nourish International and beginning a chapter.

Navigating a Complex World
The staff of Counseling and Psychological Services has created a web page section, "Navigating a Complex World," to acknowledge that while student life can be consuming due to academic demands, being a student is only one aspect of an individual's identity. This space is a tool for the university community to remain aware of national, global, and U-M campus events, especially those that might impact students' daily life, health, and wellness.

Dawn Farm Education Series
The Dawn Farm Education Series is a free annual series providing helpful, hopeful, and practical information for people in recovery, people interested in recovery, families and friends of people with an addition, professionals, students, and others. Connect to Community Portal
The Ginsberg Center has built the Connect to Community portal for U-M students to learn more about opportunities to volunteer, intern, and work for nonprofit and other organizations serving communities around the world. This resource is accessible by signing into the system with your UM login information. Students can search for organizations and opportunities by issue area and availability and receive updates directly from organizations. Contact the Assistant Director for Outreach and Communications, Abby Fanelli for assistance with the portal.

Funding for Student Organizations

CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for funding. CASC has a limited pool of money that CASC students are eligible to apply for. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. To apply for funding, students must submit a funding proposal that includes the following information: student org name, contact info, SOAS account number, event name, summary of event, date of event, complete budget. Email questions to [email protected].

Jobs and Internships
Project Opportunity with FACT
The Flint Area Congregations Together (FACT) is a Flint-based nonprofit which works with low-income community members on issues in Flint and Genesee County. FACT wants to map how institutional resources overlap with young people of color. FACT is seeking a few students for two to three days total at times flexible to them and will provide a stipend or course credit plus expenses. Tasks include working in the Flint community, shadowing young people in their everyday activities, relying on public transportation, finding something healthy to eat, or going to a library or museum. It will conclude with a report and presentation to community leaders. Interested students should send a cover letter and resume to Barry Checkoway or Diane Back by February 25, 2015.

CEO Summer Job Opportunities
The Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) is in search of responsible, dedicated, and passionate students interested in engaging with youth through summer residential programs. U-M students will serve as Student Leaders who mentor, supervise, and advise youth ages 12-16. Student Leaders are needed for spring and summer outreach programs. CSAS South Asia Fellowship
The Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS) is offering the Summer in South Asia Fellowship. Students will receive $3,000 to design their own research program, connect with an NGO or business in India, spend a minimum of four weeks in India this summer, submit a research report at the end of the summer, and attend a symposium in October presenting their research project. All U-M freshman, sophomores, and juniors who preferably have not spent extensive time in India are eligible to apply. Application deadline is March 11, 2015 at 5 PM. Students accepted into the fellowship will be notified March 15, 2015. Email Janelle Fosler for application information and details.

Diplomat Fellowship Program
The Diplomat Fellowship provides fellows with a stipend of $4,000 over the course of the summer to create a social venture in Flint, MI. During the three month program, fellows will live in free apartment-style housing in downtown Flint and be immersed in the community. They will gain hands-on experience and access to a dedicated network of professionals who will help to develop critical business and communication skills, launch a career in civic minded business, nonprofit management, or social entrepreneurship, and build a network of contacts and colleagues in a range of sectors and industries.
