CFPA's 2016 State Legislative Agenda

For two decades, CFPA has incubated and advanced innovative policy solutions that increase low-income Californians' access to nutritious, affordable food. We envision a healthy and food secure California for all residents. We are calling on the State Legislature to take action in support of this vision.

CFPA's 2016 Policy Actions

è  Invest in effective, after-the-bell school breakfast programs to improve the health and academic achievement of students in California's highest-need schools.
è  Ensure that a lack of safe drinking water does not increase food insecurity among low-income Californians without potable water in their homes.
è  Reduce food insecurity and support healthy eating by making       Summer EBT for Children a reality in California.
è  Require charter schools to address the need for free and reduced-price school meals to meet the basic needs of socioeconomically disadvantaged students.

We'd like to thank our partners who participated in CFPA's 2016 policy development process earlier this year. The insights and feedback gathered through stakeholder interviews and the online survey have proven invaluable in establishing our 2016 legislative agenda.

CFPA in the News!

In yesterday's Bay Area News Group publications, CFPA Executive Director George Manalo-LeClair and Board Member Dr. Hilary Seligman observe that we Californians are preoccupied with food, but that for many low-income families, that preoccupation is rooted in uncertainty about where their next meal may come from.

More than 4 million households in California are food insecure and ironically, those who work to produce and distribute our food are more than twice as likely to worry about having enough to eat.

Californians can help by supporting policies that decrease food insecurity for working families:
  • Push for higher wages and benefits for low-income workers in the food industry, and address inequities in the distribution of higher wage jobs.
  • Make it easier for eligible low-wage workers accessing health care through the state benefit exchange to be automatically connected with food resources like CalFresh.
  • Move school breakfast after the school bell to help ensure that the academic and behavioral benefits of breakfast reach more students.
