Graduate for Mas

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis strive to expose members to different things and not allow them to limit themselves to their immediate environment. Boys & Girls Clubs of America along with the Taco Bell Foundation has introduced a program called Graduate for Mas. Graduate for M?s is a program designed to enable and inspire teens who have made the Graduate for Mas promise to graduate high school with an opportunity to explore future career options.

One great variable that this program possesses is providing funds for college tours. On March 16th-18th, 2015 our Clubs had the opportunity to take 28 students on a regional college tour. We visited Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, Fisk University, and Lane College. Ricky is a 14 year old 9th grader at Kingsbury High School. He is the 5th child of six. His reality was that only one sister had gone to college. With nothing to look forward to, he had made up his mind that he didn't have a future and really had not made any goals for himself.

It wasn't until he went on the college tours that his future began to not look so bleak. He revealed to two of the Club Directors a life changing statement after their tours, "I did not want to go to college until now". This is what Boys & Girls Clubs do for kids across America. We make a difference in the lives of the youth that we serve and as many of our alum would say Great Futures Start Here!

Thank you for making this year's

For the 44th year in a row leaders of the Memphis community joined together with our Club kids to share a meal and a conversation at the annual Steak N' Burger dinner. Our guest speaker, Richard Montanez, inventor of the Flamin' Hot Cheeto, had adults and kids alike inspired after hearing his story of how he started as a janitor and worked to become the top Latino Executive at PepsiCo.

We also broke from tradition this year and offered a more kid friendly menu and activities with steak sliders from Napa Cafe and burgers and all the fixings from our friends at Sonic. First Tennessee sponsored our Grizzlies Game Room that featured the Grizz, Grizz Girls, and Claw Crew as well as games and a photo booth for our young guests prior to the dinner.

In addition to Richard's story, guests enjoyed a song and dance by local performer Kayden Bowie whose back up dancers were members from our Sycamore View Club. Moziah Bridges, founder of Mo's Bow's created a special signature bow tie for the evening that our host Joey Sulipeck of FOX13's Weather Authority wore proudly.

As Richard shared that night follow your dreams and "Get in the cookie line!"

Thank you to our 2015 Steak N' Burger Sponsors! And a special thank you to Michael Keeney, our 2015 Steak N' Burger Chair!

We cap the night off with an eventful block party at Harbor Town Square, packed with free food, drinks, and live music all to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis!
