Solar Panels Will Help Power Light Rail Corridor
Workers are on track to install solar panels on four commercial
rooftops along the green line corridor in 2016. The City of Saint Paul was joined today by Midway Chamber members Xcel Energy and solar developer
Innovative Power Systems as they announced a partnership
on the $2.7 million project, with Xcel Energy providing $1.9 million in
renewable development funds.
This Innovative Power Systems solar project and others in the Energy
Innovation Corridor will produce enough power to offset roughly 17 percent of the train's electrical usage annually, saving more than 1,600 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Although the systems won't directly power the train it will reduce demand in an area that needs it.
