Turkey Vulture in flight

Turkey Vultures are the unsung heroes of the bird world. Do they inspire the awe that eagles have imparted since the dawn of civilization? Well, no. Do they dazzle us with breathtaking speed like the falcons, which have proven so wildly successful in the air that even the military is looking to them for design inspiration? Not particularly.

A recent study by Common Sense Media indicates teens spend 9 hours a day on screens of one sort or another, and tweens are wrapped up with social media, video games or television for 6 hours a day.  The journal Pediatrics published a study of children in urban, low-income, minority communities that found that 97% of the children used a mobile device of some sort.  Three fourths of 4-year-olds owned a mobile device, and 28% of 2-year-olds navigate a mobile device with no help.

A wide variety of seemingly innocent yard decorations can be harmful to birds and wildlife, depending on how, when and where they are used.  Start planning your wildlife-friendly holiday displays now to minimize risks.

"If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in."  Rachel Carson
