Even though the Prince George's County Council has been out of session since Thanksgiving, there has been plenty of activity! Not only lots of news, but lots of discussion and negotiation in Upper Marlboro. Here's an update on the Prince George's County breed ban.
We've had a great deal of incredible help from the ASPCA to drive our Appeal to Repeal ever forward! Thanks to the groundwork laid by federation members in earlier meetings with council members and the continuing e
fforts of the A, we have an important advocate and possible bill sponsor in District 4 Councilman Todd Turner. Mr. Turner is the incoming chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Environment (THE) committee, where the future bill will be heard. There have been a number of thoughtful meetings with the council and other county government entities and more are being scheduled -- all very positive news.
It seems the council is hearing and synthesizing the problems inherent in the dog breed ban...there are even indications that certain councilmembers, previously absolutely opposed to our concerns, might be leaning towards sympathy for our dogs! All that said, we still have a very challenging road ahead of us, but it looks like we will have the opportunity to have our issue heard.
So, the groundwork is well underway in Upper Marlboro and things are moving in the right direction. Soon it will be our turn--when each one of us will have the opportunity to make our points in an organized and thoughtful way.
If you're around on Saturday, I urge you to
come out to Bowie City Hall on Saturday 1/16, about 9:30. Bowie-CLAW has invited Kerry Watson, Chloe Waterman from the ASPCA and me to their monthly meeting to discuss the latest on the appeal to repeal.
Hope to see you there.
