Pharad's Quarterly Newsletter                    Volume 4, Issue 3, Fall 2014

We are kicking off this Fall with several Conferences and Exhibitions. This week we are at MILCOM in Baltimore, MD, next week we will be attending the IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC) in La Jolla, CA, and the following week we will be in Sapporo, Japan for the joint IEEE International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)/Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics (APMP) conference where our VP of Engineering, Dalma Novak, will be giving a plenary talk. We would like to extend an invitation to visit us at these upcoming conferences. Contact us ahead of time to set up a meeting or just stop by and visit us.

Small Form Factor Radio Gooseneck Antenna
Rifleman Radio Antenna
MP-225-1850

At MILCOM this week, we introduced our new high performance 225 - 1850 MHz tactical gooseneck antenna for small form factor radios such as the latest Rifleman Radios. This small antenna supports all three Rifleman Radio bands in a compact gooseneck antenna that is less than eleven inches tall. This VHF to UHF antenna is the newest addition to Pharad's growing line of gooseneck antenna assemblies. It joins Pharad's portfolio of antennas, including wearable antennas and peel and stick applique antennas, that can be integrated with small form factor radios operating from 225 MHz and higher.

"We're very excited about our latest gooseneck antenna, suitable for the Rifleman Radio," Rod Waterhouse, CTO of Pharad said. "To create the physically small, broadband antenna we combined several strategies. We utilized size reduction concepts incorporated in cellular phone antennas as well as an integrated matching procedure developed through a DARPA program to provide an efficient solution that can cover all the Rifleman bands. Naturally that is only half the design, we then had to make the solution robust. At Pharad we have been making fielded gooseneck antennas for the past decade and so we incorporated these well-tested practices into our final design. We believe this new product provides a better solution for the user than what is presently available."

New LTE Antenna

LP-700-3000

In the last few months we have bolstered our LTE (Long-Term Evolution) antenna offerings. The new Pharad Low Profile LTE Antenna has been designed to support global LTE bands and multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) networks while also enabling WCDMA, CDMA, and GSM access in a single, universal antenna. The small form factor of Pharad's LTE antenna drastically shrinks the DAS (Distributed Antenna System) antenna footprint and operates over all LTE operating bands between 700 MHz and 3000 MHz. This antenna uniquely provides a compact single antenna solution that can operate anywhere in the world.

New Electro-optic Modulator Bias Controller
USB Controlled Bias Controller
MBC-DF-UC-U-PM

In response to customer demand, Pharad recently introduced the MBC-DF-UC-U-PM modulator bias controller. This PM (polarization maintaining) version of our dither-free, ultra-compact bias controller features PM fiber at both the input and output of the controller for applications where modulators are often cascaded and PM fiber is used at the output of the first electro-optic modulator. The new MBC-DF-UC-U-PM bias controller has similar capabilities to our existing MBC-DF-UC-U model: continuous tuning of the modulator bias voltage via USB computer control, an easy-to-use control interface, and direct reporting of optical power in the experimental set-up.  The new PM model also maintains locking of the modulator bias point during any variation of optical input power.
