Trans People of Color Leadership Conversation with Jennicet Gutiérrez

Join us for a conversation on Trans Leadership with activist and organizer, Jennicet Gutiérrez from Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement. This space is intended for UCSD Trans students of color to brainstorm ideas for advocacy, support, and leadership.

Jennicet Gutiérrez is an undocumented transgender activist and organizer from Mexico. She currently resides in Los Angeles and she is an organizer with Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement. Jennicet believes in the importance of uplifting and centering the voices of trans women of color in all racial justice work. Her recent interruption of President Obama at the White House has brought visibility to the torture and violence trans undocumented women are facing inside detention centers. Jennicet will continue to organize in order to end the deportation, incarceration and criminalization of immigrants and all people of color.

Free tickets to 2015 San Diego Asian Film Festival
The UC San Diego LGBT Resource Center has free tickets to the film, "
Mommy Queerest" that will be shown at the 2015 San Diego Asian Film Festival November 7th at 7:35pm at UltraStar Mission Valley. Tickets available to UCSD students on a first-come, first-serve basis. For tickets inquire at our front desk.

In addition to the three professional staff and the eight undergraduate interns, the LGBT Resource Center can boast of having two high school interns. Maybe you'll see them around - say hello!
Melanie Gonzales and Marilyn Rueda are high school seniors, currently embroiled in the midst of the college application process - Marilyn would like to be a doctor, and Melanie can give an expansive, free-wheeling list of all the things she'd like to do with her life. Meanwhile, they attend the Preuss School, that unique charter school right here at UCSD, and it was through school that they had the opportunity to have this internship. Neither of them had even known the center existed beforehand.
"I picked the child development internship as my top choice," Melanie said, "but I like it. I feel comfortable here. It's like a tree house." Marilyn ranked this internship highest, so anticipated being placed here.
The two of them are working enthusiastically on a project. It will be a mural that will live in the center and brighten it up long after these students have gone on to college themselves.
"It's about feminism, because feminism seems to have a bad connotation these days, and we wanted to make it seem inclusive, and it can be for everyone, for all genders," Marilyn explained. The two of them described the mural: a plain dull paint tube with vibrantly colored paint shooting out from it

spelling out 'feminism' and under that, the words 'for all.' It will be simple, almost minimalist, but cheerful and inviting.
They have other responsibilities in the resource center as well; they've had to run the front desk, answer the phones, and give tours of the space. Although there has been a learning curve, they've risen to every challenge and continue to learn new things.

| New Accountability Dashboards - Important Stats
The UCSD Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion has launched the UC San Diego Accountability Dashboards. The Dashboards present demographic data of UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students. They're designed to help guide the university in tracking and sharing its progress, as well as strategically focusing on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Understanding this data is critical for the university to assess strengths and weaknesses in the realms of access, recruitment, retention, and success, and having this information publicly makes the university more transparent and accountable.

New Free App to Find LGBT Roommates: TUTUroomii
A UCSD team recently launched a new iOS app called TUTUroomii. This app is designed to help LGBTQ+ young people and allies find ideal roommates in their own community.
The functionality of the app enables customers to search for both roommates and available housing resources based on personal preferences. It also provides a chat platform to enable deeper communication between potential roommates, to better ensure compatibility. Even for people not currently in need of roommates, this app could be a useful way to make new friends in your community.

Technology, Memory, & Connectivity in Africa & its Diaspora: A Workshop with Peggy Piesche

Focusing on new stories within Africa and its Diaspora, this workshop wants to delve into the worlds of new media, video art, and experimental narrative. We will follow and explore the major images and narratives of a rich and inspiring digital space, in which both, creative and political activist movements transgress continental boundaries, connect a collective African/ Diasporic experience beyond the nation-state, and re/conceptualize past futures and imagine radical alternate futures. Peggy Piesche is a visiting CSG scholar from Bayreuth University.

Summer Research & Scholarship Opportunities Info Session

The Academic Enrichment Programs (AEP) and the do/bio are partnering to bring students an information session regarding summer research and scholarship opportunities. While the information will be targeted towards biology, we will be giving out information about how to apply for summer research opportunities in general, and some opportunities we will speak about are open to students of all majors. In particular, we'll be advertising the Undergraduate Research Scholarships (URS) with applications available starting November 9 through February 1.
We will offer tips on crafting clear personal statements, getting a strong letter of support, and how to work with your PI to develop a targeted research proposal.

QuIRPS, the queer group at UCSD's Master of International Affairs program, is hosting a screening of the film Paris is Burning, and want to extend an invitation to the wider UCSD community.
Sandwiches will be served, and this is a BYOB event (within legal limits).
The film screening will be followed by a discussion and a night out.

Rady Preview Day

This is an opportunity to visit Rady and see what makes it stand out. During the day, students will have the opportunity to network with others, meet potential future classmates, learn about the curricula of the programs, experience a master class taught by a faculty members, tour the facilities, and discuss campus life with current students and alumni. This program is open to all interested prospective students regardless of program or application status.
The corporate world is seriously lacking in diversity and LGBT CEOs and managers, especially those in the high-tech, bio-tech, and innovation industries. Students who are interested in a future in the private sector should seriously consider attending this event.

For students who are interested in the intersection of history, culture, and the African American experience, the African American Studies Minor could be a perfect fit.
The African American Studies Minor has a list of courses that will be coming up in the Winter and Spring that could count toward the minor, including but not limited to CGS 150: "Visuality, Sexuality and Race" and ETHN 183: "Gender, Race, Ethnicity and Class."

CARE at SARC Violence Prevention Initiative
CARE at SARC (Sexual Assault Resource Center) is developing a campus wide violence prevention initiative and wants student input. Young Women's Discussion Group

Survey of LGBTQ Military Personnel
A doctoral student at the University of Oklahoma is writing a dissertation on the identity process of LGBTQ people who have served in the U.S. military. They're interested in reaching LGBTQ U.S. military personnel, and heterosexual/cisgender
personnel who had a personal or professional relationship with an LGBTQ military service person (someone to whom an LGBTQ service member disclosed their sexual or gender identity).

Applications for 2016 YPC Academy

The Center at Hillcrest's YPC Academy program is accepting applications for 2016. The Academy exists to help expand the ranks of young LGBT leaders ready to serve our community through board service for a variety of agencies, not-for-profit organizations and government commissions. The 2016 class will consist of 20 candidates ages 21-40. An information session will be held at The Center on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 6pm.

Robert Giard Fellowship
$7,500 Photography Award

The Robert Giard Fellowship Award will be awarded in support of a new or continuing project that addresses issues of sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ identity. This award is presented to an emerging, early or mid-career artist from any country working in photography and still images.

Thinking Gender

Submissions are open for the graduate student research conference on the topic of Spatial Awareness, Representation, and Gendered Spaces. Submissions can include papers, posters, panels, and films, as long as they engage with the politics of gender, race, sexuality, and space. We also intend to address international and transnational encounters, and colonization and decolonization practices.

Opportunity to Urge Gov. Brown to support AB 959
AB 959 would ensure that sexual orientation and gender identity data would be collected along with other important demographic information used to determine state policies and funding. A petition is circulating in favor of AB 959, to increase out visibility in state policies.

Lesbian Body Image Survey
The Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville is doing a study on lesbian attitudes & feelings about your own body,gender identity and gender expression. Lesbians over 18 are eligible and $50 Amazon gift cards will be raffled for participants. The survey should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
