Happy November!

As many of our parents and families know, the new standards in math and English Language Arts ask our students to demonstrate their thinking in new and innovative ways.  Additionally, many of our parents/guardians continue to ask questions about how the new standards and requirements will better prepare their student for future success, especially in math.  In FVSD, we think it's important to share how we are working to ensure that our students continue to thrive, not only for today, but well into their adult lives.  In this issue, we take a closer look at:
  • How real mathematicians solve problems.
  • How Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is emerging at the primary level.
  • A terrific PTA resource, by grade level, that explains what parents can expect with our new standards.
In addition, please find a recent press release regarding our facilities, including air quality and climate, as well as an update on POLAR DAY!

Thank you for all that you do to support teaching and learning in our District!

Kindly,

Mark Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent
VIDEO: Great Example of How "Real" Mathematicians Solve Problems!
Ever wonder how real mathematicians go about solving problems?  Do they all follow the same rules and steps, or does it depend on the way(s) that each person conceptually understands the problem?

UPDATE: TK-2 Grade Teachers Jump into CGI Training.  Our Teachers are Amazing!!
Over the last month, our remarkable TK-2 grade teachers have been working hard to learn more about and begin implementing Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), a research-based philosophy that focuses on each student's conceptual development in math.  The pictures below highlight several of our CGI moments and demonstrate our teachers' commitment to growing professionally.  As superintendent, I cannot begin to express how thrilled I am to work with such dedicated and highly skills educators!
