A Note From Our Director
On behalf of the
Leadership in Community Benefit Organizations Program (LCBO), we look forward to a wonderful year of sharing exciting leadership and professional development
opportunities with you.
WHO WE ARE
LCBO supports students interested in leadership and management within the social s
ector. Our offerings might be particularly relevant for students with a management major, minor, or general management interests within other concentrations.
Our rich range of program offerings address the University's and School's main mission
Teaching,
Research and
Service as well as
Professional Development and
Innovation. Our goal is to work with you to
develop competence (knowledge + skills) to be "job ready" upon graduation and to have the ability and confidence to secure not only jobs, but
strategically good jobs.
LCBO has lunch-and-learn sessions, consulting opportunities, networking events, a student advisory group, and lots of other ways to par
ticipate, so we will be looking forward to seeing you!
We use the term "community benefit organization" as opposed to the more traditional "nonprofit":
SEMESTER THEMES
Each semester we have a theme around which we provide our Master Class. This Fall the theme is
PHILANTHROPY and we have three focal activities touching on it.
- Our SEED WEEK activity, "Getting the Tools We Need" focuses on infrastructure lapse in the philanthropic sector and imagines ways in which agencies could be more adequately resourced and provisioned, both in terms of "hardware" (buildings, equipment, etc.) and "software" (training and professional development of personnel, etc.).
-
The
"Master Class" presented by our graduate Eileen Heisman, CEO of the National Philanthropic Trust of Philadelphia, will be held on October 9
th. In her morning session she will be discussing her leadership journey and tips for emerging professionals. In the afternoon she will present a public lecture, "Philanthropy: Then, Now and the Future."
-
The
Philanthropy and Evaluation mini-course will be offered on Friday, November 20
th and December 4
th from 9-5.
In sum, we are the largest educator of CBO manager and leaders in the country with about 150 majors and minors. We strive to be the most exciting and engaging place to do this work. We welcome your input on ways we can support your leadership growth and development and we look forward to a great Fall Term!

Ever Think of Working for a Corporation?
With a social worker's ability to view issues on a holistic level as well as offer solutions in innovative and creative ways to corporate officers, social workers in corporate settings are the new trend. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects nearly a
20 percent growth in social work jobs by 2022, with many of them in the private sector outside of what used to be the "normal" social worker's environment.

The Future of Detroit: Q&A With Kresge Foundation President & CEO, Rip Repson
"One, six or seven years ago we had the idea that if we could create a pool of
dollars that would help create, or at least reinforce an entrepreneurial ecology,
that would be an important play to make. That rather than creating a new venture fund for health devices, or tech devices that what we could do to create training and support and maybe a little bit of angel investing at the front end.
To try to get an ecology of entrepreneurship and small business growth more deeply embedded in the community, that fund was called the
New Economy Initiative. We put $130 million into it among 10 different foundations."
