STUDENTS IN THE NEWS-- Visualizing the Future

Young Minds Consider the Future
One of the Extended Learning Time classes CPN funds at Sanders-Clyde Elementary invited third and fourth grade students to write about what they want to become. But first, to help them visualize the assignment, they were asked to pose for a 'future selfie' -- complete with props.
The class is called A Backpack Journalist and over the course of two weeks, Guest Instructor and CPN partner Linda Dennis provided props out of a suitcase to help students "be" their future selves. They "became' doctors, Navy Seals, pilots, a hair stylist, and one ambitious young man brought his own Sunday jacket to school to pose as ... the President of the United States!
The technique is inspired by illustrator Norman Rockwell who, before his paint brush hit the canvas, positioned props in his studio to help him visualize his iconic Americana compositions. Dennis ran a short film on Rockwell's work and life, and brought to class a full color, 300-page book on the exact process he used to create his 323 magazine covers.
When compiled, the Rockwell-inspired selfies and descriptions, written by Sanders-Clyde students, will tell stories about dreams and passions and illustrate critical thinking skills.

| Lowcountry Giving Day is coming! Be sure to maximize your support for CPN by making an online donation on Tuesday, May 5th, on CPN's donation page. Lowcountry Giving Day is hosted by Coastal Community Foundation, and Charleston Promise Neighborhood is one of more than 180 participating nonprofit organizations. CPN is eligible to receive up to $50,000 in matching dollars, based on the total dollar amount we raise online, between 12:00 am and 11:59 pm! 
Thanks to loyal supporters like you, last year CPN came in 5th place with $98,845, plus a $50,000 match, in total online donations. Our goal this year is to raise $150,000. Please support CPN on May 5th, and help spread the word. Every gift will get us closer to claiming the full $50,000 match! Follow us on Facebook to stay up to date as we count down to May 5th. Family Time at the Charleston Aquarium

| Two hundred and fifty students and parents recently enjoyed an evening of learning and discovery when Charleston Promise Neighborhood Learning Community (CPNLC) was given after-hours VIP treatment at the South Carolina Aquarium, a CPN Expanded Day Partner. CPNLC families touched sea life, learned about coastal animals and their habitats, and studied South Carolina plants. "I spoke with numerous parents who were very excited about being at the aquarium with their children and other members of their community. They want to have more opportunities like this," said LaTisha Vaughn-Brandon, Assistant Associate Superintendent of CCSD and Director of Education Initiatives for CPNLC. By Lexi Sorbara, volunteer

Meet Courtenay Fain
CPN's New
Director of Development & Marketing
|
Courtenay Fain has joined the CPN team as Director of Development and Marketing. She is responsible for the development and implementation of fundraising strategies and building a solid fundraising infrastructure to support CPN's program work.
Her career began in Washington, DC, and included work as a legislative aide on Capitol Hill, a grassroots lobbyist for private land conservation, a public relations manager with an international firm, and as a White House appointee coordinating faith-based and community initiatives at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Since moving to the Lowcountry 10 years ago, Courtenay's professional focus has been in nonprofit development. At Coastal Community Foundation she helped donors create customized endowment funds to achieve their philanthropic objectives. Most recently at Porter-Gaud School, she developed and implemented a successful campaign to secure planned gifts to grow the school's endowment. Courtenay is an alumna of Georgetown University, loves the outdoors, and enjoys being a wife and mom of a precocious five-year old.

Extended Learning Time News:
$249,000 Grant Awarded CPNLC for its Extended Learning Time Pilot
CPN is excited to announce that last week the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee awarded the Charleston Promise Neighborhood Learning Community (CPNLC) almost $250,000 to continue our extended day program at Sanders-Clyde Creative Arts School and begin a similar program at Chicora School of Communications in North Charleston. CPN Executive Director Sherrie Snipes-Williams adds that CPN will contribute $117,000 to this grant so that additional students at Chicora will be able to participate.
The Extended Learning Time has been popular with CPN families. Students stay at school until about 5pm, taking age-level enrichment courses in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. They spend time devoted to their school homework and they get a hot meal. The goal is to close the achievement gap between our CPNLC students and those in higher income area schools.

| A Note From Our Chairman: We have been shocked and saddened by the recent tragic events in North Charleston. Though the killing of Mr. Walter Scott did not take place within the boundaries of the CPN, he was nonetheless our neighbor and we want to convey our deepest condolences to his family. We very much value the close relationship we have with the City of North Charleston and the North Charleston Police Department and we grieve with them, too.
|
Progress happens at the speed of trust. It is our fervent hope that the relationships that children in the CPN are building with the Police today will help preclude the recurrence of such a tragic event ever again in our community. We must increase the personal interaction and shared perspective that leads to higher and higher degrees of trust among all parties.
