It's Spring! Treat  Your Body Right with a Clean CPAP System!
 
 
Recommended CPAP Cleaning Schedule: 
(from the  last CPAP Chat call on 4/1/15)

  

Daily

  1. Wipe foam mask cushion with damp cloth.
  2. Clean nasal pillows with warm soapy water (Ivory liquid). Rinse with clean water. Air dry on a towel.
  3. Empty water chamber daily and refill with clean distilled water each night. If using the SoClean sanitizer daily, it's OK to leave the water in the chamber and add to it each night.

Weekly

  1. Wash mask with warm soapy water. Rinse and air dry on towel or hang.
  2. Chamber- Wash weekly with Ivory and rinse well with warm water.
  3. Wash hose with warm soapy water or 4-parts water/1-part white distilled vinegar. Rinse and hang to dry. (some folks do this in the shower)
  4. Gray foam filter is washed with warm soapy water, rinsed and dried.
  5. Never use harsh chemicals.

Monthly: Inspect Filters

The white machine filter is for ultra-fine particles such as pollen. Please inspect monthly and replace it when brownish in color. This filter is NOT reusable. Gray foam filters can be washed and reused.  

 

Please remember that none of your CPAP parts are dishwasher safe
(as tempting as it may be!)

CPAP Talk-Live! has a New Name!  
The free monthly virtual support session has a new name, 'CPAP Chat,' replacing the name 'CPAP Talk-Live' that had been used during the program's first year. 

According to NST President Eric Cohen, "The new name 'CPAP Chat' is simple, explains exactly what we do, and it's easy to remember." 'CPAP Chat,' the only program of its kind, is held on the first Wednesday of every month from 7 - 8 pm (ET). The sessions are open to all and totally anonymous.

Sessions feature expert guests, health care professionals and tips and advice from CPAP users and others with sleep disordered breathing. Join the CPAP Chat.

NST Success Stories


A former middle school principal, corporate educator, and software marketer, 79 year-old Gene Hayes of Alpharetta, Georgia, never thought about slowing down.

But in 2003, he noticed a drowsiness around mid-day, and naps became part of his daily routine. "That wasn't like me. I just chalked it up to age," Gene recalls. "I also thought that surgeries on my hip and knee had taken their toll."

Earlier on a sales trip, Gene shared a hotel room with a son. They were attempting to build a software business together to help school administrators track textbooks. "My son complained that my loud snoring had kept him up. When we got home, my wife agreed I was a loud snorer, but she thought it was normal and had learned to sleep through it."
 
 
We visited a pulmonologist who arranged a sleep study. "The study in 2009 showed I was having over 40 apnea episodes every hour, so even though I was in bed for 7 - 8 hours, I never really got the deep REM sleep your body needs. When the doctor prescribed CPAP therapy, my son suggested we contact his old childhood friend, Eric Cohen, a cofounder and president of National Sleep Therapy (NST).

Question:
How often should I be re-titrated? In other words, how often should I have another sleep study to determine if my equipment pressures are set appropriately for me?

 

Answer:

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends that patients be "re-titrated" once a year or when lifestyle changes occur, to ensure that optimum therapeutic levels are maintained. This is especially important if you lose or gain weight; no longer feel you are getting optimal sleep; and/or if you are taking new medications (which can sometimes make apnea worse).
